Gaffe-tastic: Panetta suggests India is an enemy
“We face the threats from rising powers — China, India, others — that we have to always have sufficient force protection out there in the Pacific to make sure they know we’re never going anywhere,” Mr. Panetta said during a visit to a shipyard in Groton, Conn., where he toured a submarine, the Mississippi, in the final stages of construction.

Congrats, moron. Piss off a potentially friendly country who is far more likely to be stable than their neighbor, Pakistan.

Oh, no, no, no! My sister just got back from Bombay on Tuesday. They really love us (Americans in general) there. Good going, Leon, you idiot.

Cain, warn Panetta that India might get nukes some day.
itsnotaboutme on November 17, 2011 at 11:12 PM
Now this dude is the sitting SecDef. But Herman Cain pauses and it’s an endless loop story. Why do we play along with the media’s games, especially against our own? Watch, there won’t be a peep from the media about this.

The world isn’t fair. Our guys have to be better than their guys, or we lose.
Deal with it.

And they own all the 7-11′s and Dunkin’ Donuts, too! Just ask Vice-Presiden Joe Biden.

What an enormous blunder, how regrettable this is Panetta is likely far too stupid to understand…
rightwingyahooo on November 17, 2011 at 11:17 PM
That is not a Gaffe. That is the way this administration thinks. If you are pro-American, we hate you. If you hate America, we will appease you.
AshleyTKing on November 17, 2011 at 11:18 PM
He meant to say Indiana.

A gaffe is when you a politician accidentally says something that is true.
Ergo, this is not a gaffe.

Ganesh is not amused, Leon.

lol. Not bad.
rightwingyahooo on November 17, 2011 at 11:28 PM
Good for him! Tell it like it is, Leon. Why should we trust India? There are many dangers out there we need to be ready to oppose. I’m not taking my eyes off Canada for one second.
mankai on November 17, 2011 at 11:37 PM
Yeah, a gaffe. Panetta was just reciting the list of rising Eastern Powers in his remarks and not thinking or separating them out in his head as he did so. I like the fact there is some thought about keeping challengers at bay, though. That is at least heartening.
If he a POTUS candidate this would be grist for the mill. As a runner in any primary contest this mis-speak would be hemmed and hawed.
At best, he’s the SecDef of an Administration who’s been at least willing to go at Pakistan and to court India. At worst, he’s representing an incoherent Indo-Pak policy conveyed by the current Admin.
I don’t really like Panetta, but, he had a real genuine flub here. No one seriously thinks India is an American strategic enemy.

Better is subjective when the judges on what is better are on the other side and do not want you to win no matter how better you are. The right need to stop playing that game of jumping to the bar that the left has made for the right to jump to get above when the left have no bar at all.

THAT should get the OOOOPS! headline.
Can you imagine if Rummy had said this?
Tony737 on November 17, 2011 at 11:59 PM
This administration has the biggest fool at the top.
Panetta was twice misplaced, in his previous and current jobs.
Schadenfreude on November 18, 2011 at 12:07 AM
Heh… not bad for a ‘smart guy’ who’s only real job was sneaking bimbos in and out of the WH, while Hillary stomping around the place, flinging ashtrays like they where shurikens…. ah, those were the days. /
Shoulda kept him at the CIA… apparently he was a ‘natural’, and wasn’t doing ‘too much’ harm. /s
God Save the Republic. Please.

Do we have to deal with them every day?
rogerb on November 18, 2011 at 5:40 AM
The press absolutly excoriated Rumsfeld for the “You go to war with the Army you have.” statement that the Chattanooga journalist fed to a National Guardsman during a Q/A in Kuwait. But the simple fact was it was simply true.
I get the impression some days that the media might be a tad biased.

I’m not surprised a Communist would say this.
