Poll: 75% of Americans support Obama on Iraq withdrawal
These findings are consistent with Americans’ long-standing desire to leave Iraq. Last August, as the drawdown in U.S. forces was underway, 6 in 10 Americans were opposed to renewing combat operations in Iraq even if Iraqi forces were unable to maintain security in that country.
Republicans at that time also expressed some willingness to remain in Iraq, depending on the stability of the situation there, while Democrats and independents were largely opposed to a change in the policy…
Republicans’ disapproval of Obama’s withdrawal policy may partly be influenced by their more general opposition to setting hard deadlines for withdrawing troops, rather than an actual desire to keep U.S. troops in Iraq. Their opposition to his policy may also be related to their broader disapproval of Obama — 9% of Republicans have approved of the job Obama is doing in each of the last three months.

I’d rather support an Obama withdrawal.

That should be “support Bush” as the withdrawal agreement was negotiated under Bush, not Obama and Obama tried to delay it.

Really ignorant people.

‘support Obama’ and get the troops out of Iraq/Afghanistan are two different things.

75% of people support the fact that Obama is withdrawing from Iraq 21 months later than he promised during his campaign?

We should have withdrawn the day after nabbing Hussein.
My heart goes out to our military who served there, those that were injured, and all those families who lost loved ones. Even though I was not directly affected, I still feel horrible about the whole situation. I can understand those that would say we should not let their sacrifices be in vain. But Iraq isn’t worth one American life. The fact that so many have been lost already, should not be used as justification for us to lose even more in the future.
Nation-building in Arab/Islamic populations is a fool’s errand. After wiping out the Taliban, we should have left Afghanistan. After nabbing Saddam, we should have left Iraq. In both places, we should have left a sticky-note: “If you get any funny ideas, we’ll be back.”

In April of 1940,over 70% of Americans were against joining the war effort against Hitler.
Only after months of both political parties calling for supporting our allies across the ocean combined with the attack on Pearl Harbor did these attitudes change.
When victory was achieved….steps were taken to secure the peace which involved keeping troops there until the new governments were stabilized.
Iraq was a war that both parties supported until the democrats decided to politicize it to gain power on the Hill.
It was won before Obama came into office…quickly disappeared from the headlines (now that it couldn’t be used to bash Republicans)…and now we have a President who did nothing to secure the peace or inform Americans of the severe consequences of leaving Iraq to the forces of Iran.
Combine this with severe economic problems at home and this poll is not surprising at all.
The ongoing climb to power by the jihadist and History will show that radical Islam made it’s greatest gains during an Obama administration that calls turning countries like Libya over to al-qaeda “smart power.”

I’m surprised it’s that low.

Right before Pearl Harbor, the majority of the American people were happy to allow the Brits and French and Russians and others, including the War Against the Jews, to be killed and taken over by the nazis
So now we know the difference between Obama and FDR…FDR may have been nasty left wing pol like Obama, but he loved America and he was smart enough to see the nazi menace and to LEAD the American people to where their uninformed parochialism did not take them naturally
Obama either can’t see the islamist threat to the world or he supports it or he is unwilling to lead the people to tasks that must be completed to protect our American way life

What you call neocon delusion is a statement of fact. Baxter Greene is one of the best commenters on this site and you are a disrespectful idiot.

Ahhhh….the comparisons to WW2.
So now some of you are finally calling for the U.S. to actually destroy the enemy (with the inevitable “collateral damage”) and its infrastructure? Turn Afganistan, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, etc.. into a wasteland? Maybe even a nuclear wasteland? A “Kill em all” mindset? No more passive, compassionate, hopeful, politically correct mindsets?
Great! Anything but the failed Neocon “Hearts and Minds” Islamic Nation Building. Many more would be onboard for this.
Stop draining U.S. resources on strategies that have no ROI. Go big or stay home.
Start with Iran.

“statement of fact” as defined by you and his ilk, of course.
“best commenters” ….LOL!
I respect those that earn it. Calm down with all the rage, fanboy.

G.Bush never should have gone into Afghanistan Or Iraq.
He should have educated himself and the world on what Islam is all about. The root cause of so many ills in those lands and every land it touches.
bridgetown on November 3, 2011 at 9:36 AM
Somewhat of a tall order. He would have been vilified in academia and the media if he had tried to do that – assuming that he even gets Islam.
Basilsbest on November 3, 2011 at 10:01 AM
None of this suggests that the war wasn’t won prior to Obama taking office.
Maybe you think it could have been won more efficiently, but that doesn’t mean that it wasn’t won.
blink on November 3, 2011 at 10:15 AM
Define “won” in Iraq.
