Revealed: Two women employees accused Cain of inappropriate behavior in 1990s
During Herman Cain’s tenure as the head of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s, at least two female employees complained to colleagues and senior association officials about inappropriate behavior by Cain, ultimately leaving their jobs at the trade group, multiple sources confirm to POLITICO.
The women complained of sexually suggestive behavior by Cain that made them angry and uncomfortable, the sources said, and they signed agreements with the restaurant group that gave them financial payouts to leave the association. The agreements also included language that bars the women from talking about their departures…
Cain said he has “had thousands of people working for me” at different businesses over the years and could not comment “until I see some facts or some concrete evidence.” His campaign staff was given the name of one woman who complained last week, and it was repeated to Cain on Sunday. He responded, “I am not going to comment on that.”
He was then asked, “Have you ever been accused, sir, in your life of harassment by a woman?”
He breathed audibly, glared at the reporter and stayed silent for several seconds. After the question was repeated three times, he responded by asking the reporter, “Have you ever been accused of sexual harassment?”…
The sources — which include the recollections of close associates and other documentation — describe episodes that left the women upset and offended. These incidents include conversations allegedly filled with innuendo or personal questions of a sexually suggestive nature, taking place at hotels during conferences, at other officially sanctioned restaurant association events and at the association’s offices. There were also descriptions of physical gestures that were not overtly sexual but that made women who experienced or witnessed them uncomfortable and that they regarded as improper in a professional relationship…
“These are old and tired allegations that never stood up to the facts,” [Cain spokesman J.D.] Gordon said in an email response. “This was settled amicably among all parties many years ago, and dredging this up now is merely part of a smear campaign meant to discredit a true patriot who is shaking up the political status quo.”

There are some major differences in the two stories though.
The Vera Drake story is so far, just a rumor, which both sides deny. While the National Enquirer got it right with the John Edwards story, they have made a lot of mistakes in the past. And will probably make mistakes in the future.
We’ll find out more about the Cain situation. But it seems to involve past accusers and an actual financial transaction.

serves right for the tea party to rely on this unvetted flake.
promachus on October 30, 2011 at 9:29 PM
That is Vera Baker, but you make a great point.
carbon_footprint on October 30, 2011 at 9:29 PM
We can’t elect Herman Cain until we know about his opinions re: photoshopped black male pornstars. Remember when Obama was asked these sorts of probing questions?

That is super! GG, we are watching history unfold before our eyes – the comeback of Rick Perry.
Let me repost the ad here for easy access:
Rick Perry’s New Iowa Ad: Doer
Thanks, gophergirl, for first posting this.
TheRightMan on October 30, 2011 at 9:32 PM
It doesn’t matter if it’s true. Even if it’s not, it will be endlessly resurrected and hammered.
And it’s probably establishment Republicans behind the release of the information.
Palinized.
VidOmnia on October 30, 2011 at 9:32 PM
Good ad, but for God’s sake what’s with the purple shirt?
JohnGalt23 on October 30, 2011 at 9:33 PM
LOL… you are proving what I said would happen when Perry starts doing well in the debates.
“Perry did well BUT…” his critics will howl.
There is always a BUT with Perry critics. Nothing he does will satisfy them. Thankfully, they are in the minority.
TheRightMan on October 30, 2011 at 9:37 PM
Rick Perry is next.
nyx on October 30, 2011 at 9:38 PM
What, did he ask them if they wanted a little sausage on their pizza? Stick a fork in him, he’s done.
PatMac on October 30, 2011 at 9:38 PM
Hmmm, maybe this explains why Cain was asked to resign from Godfathers.
JA on October 30, 2011 at 9:39 PM
This is why Cain was milking the spotlight. He knew he wasn’t going to win, he wasn’t running seriously, after all a fox news gig is waiting for him. Meanwhile, he’ll have blocked Perry and Gingrich. Ueeful idiot for Mittens and the GOP establishment.
promachus on October 30, 2011 at 9:40 PM
Why isn’t this post on the main page…?
Seven Percent Solution on October 30, 2011 at 9:43 PM
Maybe AP is looking into it more and writing something up on it?
sharrukin on October 30, 2011 at 9:44 PM
Next in what? Attacks by the media/GOP Establishment/Dem Establishment? Old news.
If Cain can go through even half of the attacks that have been launched on Perry to date and manages to keep his poll numbers intact, he will win my respect and I’ll sit up.
Till then, enjoy the first salvo against Cain.
TheRightMan on October 30, 2011 at 9:45 PM
With 115 comments and being the second headline thread, you can count on this being on the main page soon.
carbon_footprint on October 30, 2011 at 9:45 PM
And the Cain campaign is flatly denying the story
You might want to leave a little wiggle room guys…
JohnGalt23 on October 30, 2011 at 9:46 PM
actually the headline here understates the story somewhat doesn’t it? looks like HA is trying to bury it.
promachus on October 30, 2011 at 9:46 PM
Nope.
Knucklehead on October 30, 2011 at 9:48 PM
Hey, go vet yourself.
AshleyTKing on October 30, 2011 at 9:49 PM
The polls say otherwise.
And I’m sorry, but a purple shirt hardly says “Doer” to me… unless you are talking about doing a couple of very dry martinis at the 19th hole…
JohnGalt23 on October 30, 2011 at 9:49 PM
But rapes at the OWS…
… well, that is an internal issue.
I’ve said too much already…!

He flipped someone off and told another to go F*** themselves.
I’m pretty sure that’s the substance of these two allegations.
Much ado about nothing, but it’ll be the talk of the media for the week’s cycle.
Jason Coleman on October 30, 2011 at 9:50 PM
Don’t tell me Anita Hill and sleazy Nina Totenberg have dreamed up another stereotypical narrative of pubes and Coke cans where those whom have left the Democrat Plantation must be punished?
viking01 on October 30, 2011 at 9:50 PM
Not sure. The media isn’t exactly known for a strict adherence to the facts particularly as far as Republicans go, so some caution is well advised. I do think its a story that needs to be dealt with cause it ain’t goin’ away. The media will see to that.
sharrukin on October 30, 2011 at 9:51 PM

Works for me.

Not quite. She made the quitter meme her own by quitting the 2012 presidential campaign. She knew perfectly well that all her supporters were convinced she was running and she dropped them like it was no big deal to disappoint them.
Well, it was a big deal to them and she is not a force to be reckoned with any more. Yeah, their are blind supporters who will die before they wake up but the truth is she did not care enough about America to run.
Cain does, and lots of former palinistas like myself are already on the Cain Train. Unlike Palin (who was afraid to risk failure), he won’t quit until he’s broke.
I have a prediction – the more they throw the race card at him, the more supporters he will get and the more determined he will become.

the palinization continues…

Good Solid B-Plus on October 30, 2011 at 9:58 PM
What polls? The same polls that previously had Perry at the front of the pack? Before his supporters moved to Cain?
One thing I can tell you – Cain’s support is soft and scandals like this one will not help. Especially since he has little political experience to begin with.
And seriously… you are now going to criticize Perry’s shirts? You are digging, my dear friend…

Except, I like Perry. I like him even more after having watched his performance from Friday night. And I liked the ad. I liked the theme. I liked his performance.
I just didn’t like the shirt.
A little bit touchy, are we?
JohnGalt23 on October 30, 2011 at 10:03 PM
Yeah, that’s really reaching. Perry wears alot of light blue shirts so this may be a blue shirt that “read” purple on video. I didn’t even notice it until it was pointed out.
Loved the ad! Dare we hope that things are looking up?
Although am a tiny bit concerned with the video in NH. He does talk and act this way in person but he did seem a little “punch drunk”. Maybe overly tired?

Did either incident involve a cigar, or did anyone tell them they might want to put some ice on that?
Christien on October 30, 2011 at 10:06 PM
yeah, she could’ve run just so that she could stop romney and cain would win right? you admitted that was why u wanted her to run s, stop acting like you are die-hard supporter. you people must be burning with envy because cain’s support is so fickle and soft whereas hers is as you said die hard.

One thing I’ll be watching for tomorrow: It’s pretty clear that Drudge hates Obama. I imagine he’ll be posting all sorts of “flashbacks” related to Obama and “alleged” sex scandals that got NO media play. That’ll be fun.
Rational Thought on October 30, 2011 at 10:10 PM
He is done. I think they call it Karma or something. Time to get behind Perry to stop Mittens.
Southernblogger on October 30, 2011 at 10:10 PM
I find it interesting that Alabama black Democrat Rep. Artur Davis hints last week at maybe switching to GOP shortly before Herman Cain visits that state this past weekend as part of his campaign. I’m beginning to see more hyphenated-Americans considering discarding that hyphen and the Democrat Party for the freedom of self-determination Conservatism offers. I think there’s trouble brewing in the South for the Democrat Party among Southern blacks especially the suburban and rural ones who put their faith ahead of for whom their parents voted are observing more clearly where the promises of the Great Society turned into total cultural rot, self-destruction and dependency.
viking01 on October 30, 2011 at 10:12 PM
Yep, that’s exactly what the polls say.
Wait.
Um, forget it.
Splashman on October 30, 2011 at 10:12 PM
Someone needs to screw with Biden and ask him if voting for Cain will also increase rapes and robberies.
