Time
Tardy students to receive automated wake-up calls — from their high school
Have trouble getting up and at ‘em? Around 250 students at Marshalltown High School, in Marshalltown, Iowa, will be getting a nice little reminder bright and early each morning. Maybe students will thank the principal for not having to dash after the bus or having to frantically cut through streets to head off the bus at the last few stops? (Wow, that brings back memories.)

Somehow, I don’t think “sleeping in” is the reason those students are tardy.

Great, so the lazy, irresponsible kids can grow up to be lazy irresponsible employees always expecting the boss to overlook or compensate for their childishness.

I would settle for them giving a decent education… to those who show up.

Like a kid can’t sleep through a phone ringing?
What got me up was my mom screaming: Get up! This is the last time I’m telling you! Get out of bed!
And, she did it until I got the fuck out of bed.

I wonder if they get their news on what’s going on in Oceania and Eastasia along with that wake up?

I don’t see the problem with this. It actually kind of seems like a good idea. It probably won’t cost more, since the school probably already has an automated system in place for calling students’ houses (they do this if the kids don’t show up at school, but no parent has called to say the kid is sick – to make sure the kids aren’t just missing). And I think it would help in the daily yelling of “Get out of bed! The bus is almost here!” to be able to add, “Do you know what time it is? The school has already called!”

Exactly. I promise you, as someone who is not a morning person and was chronically tardy as a result (and served many hours in detention because of it), the phone ringing is NOT going to prompt any kid to roll out of bed on time. If you can hit the snooze alarm, you can shut off the ringer too.
I, too, had my own personal wake up call in the form of my screaming mother. If the yelling didn’t work, she would yank all the covers and sheets off my bed until I was so cold I had to get up.
My dad, OTOH, only ever had to level his gaze at me and say in his very calm but intimidating voice, “Get. Out. Of. The. Bed.” I was up and in the shower in about 10 seconds.

Yeah that phone call will just make them jump right out of bed.
Rolls eyes
Most are tardy because they dont care about being tardy.

Bets on how long until some clever kid discovers “*72911″?

Zactly.
Oh how I’d love to see a backlash: “Personal Responsibility: you don’t phone it in!”
