Poll: Congress’s approval rating among independents down to … 14%
The new 2009 low in approval from independents comes at a time when a majority of registered independents say they would likely vote Republican rather than Democratic, 52% to 30%, if elections for Congress were held today. With Republicans and Democrats exhibiting the same degree of loyalty to their parties’ candidates, independents’ preference for Republicans gives that party a 48% to 44% edge over Democrats among registered voters overall.
Approval of Congress is one of several key indicators to watch leading up to the 2010 midterm elections, with lower approval ratings generally relating to greater turnover in seats from one party to the other. Congress’ job approval rating now precisely matches the 26% recorded in November 2006, just before control of Congress shifted from Republicans to Democrats, and is not too dissimilar from the 23% recorded in October 1994, just before control shifted from Democrats to Republicans. It is also well below its 36% average of the past two decades.

But their congressman is the bees knees.
lorien1973 on November 15, 2009 at 11:45 AM
Which is always the problem. They hate Congress as a whole but they’ll keep electing their own representative, often regardless of his quality as a representative.
So we end up with yet another Congress full of multi-term incumbents.

14% ?
Thank you Nazi Pelosi, Dingy Harry.

I usually don’t like being in large groups but I am one of the 86%ers.
VegasRick on November 15, 2009 at 11:54 AM
Yeah, and 14% of those independents will actually turn off the Balloon Boy family Saga and go vote.

Maybe this will work?
BL@KBIRD on November 15, 2009 at 12:11 PM
So 86% don’t like Congress. But I’ll bet 90% of that 86% thinks their congressman is just super duper.

The current Congress has great ratings for taking care of their constituency… it’s just that their constituency accounts for about 10% of the country.
These stables have to be mucked-out next year.

Lots of people I know, even those who say they are conservative will not say anything about politics…how do these pollsters get them to comment?? I mean these same people have no problem talking about the economy, health care, the price of a gallon of gas…but nada, not one thing about ‘congress’. I doubt most of them even know who their congressmen are. There are just so many hours in the day afterall, and they have to watch Dancing With The Stars… How can anyone NOT have an opinion?? They just seem to not make the connection.

That high?
I’m disappointed in the Independents.

I think that Pelosi and Reid are fully capable of achieving single digits (and the way they’re going, negative numbers) before they’re voted out.
