Poll: For the first time, majority says health care is not gov’t responsibility
Gallup has asked this question each November since 2001 as part of the Gallup Poll Social Series, and most recently in its Nov. 5-8 Health and Healthcare survey. There have been some fluctuations from year to year, but this year marks the first time in the history of this trend that less than half of Americans say ensuring healthcare coverage for all is the federal government’s responsibility.
The high point for the “government responsibility” viewpoint occurred in 2006, when 69% of Americans agreed. In 2008, this percentage fell to 54%, its previous low reading. This year, in the midst of robust debate on a potentially imminent healthcare reform law, the percentage of Americans agreeing that it is the government’s responsibility to make sure everyone has health insurance has fallen even further, by seven points, to 47%. Half of Americans now say this is not the government’s responsibility.
The reason behind this shift is unknown.

Health care is not a government responsibility? What’s next – clothing, feeding, and housing me won’t be the government’s responsibility!?!
What will I do?
gwelf on November 13, 2009 at 9:26 AM
Nothing a little time at the re-education camp can’t fix.
amerpundit on November 13, 2009 at 9:28 AM
Come on – it’s a very centrist position that in order to provide health insurance to 15 million Americans we’ve got to threaten to imprison more than 15 million Americans and take over 1/6th of the economy.
gwelf on November 13, 2009 at 9:28 AM
I, for one, look forward to comprehensive government detainment camp healthcare between stints in the cooler.

How did we make it as a country to this point without government involvement in providing food, clothing and shelter?

But controlling the temperature of the Earth… now that’s a government responsibility we can get behind.

they can’t possibly imprison 100 million people all at once, can they? civil disobedience baby!

So, so true. It’s such a joke.

What is the American public afraid of. Our various levels of government have been running education as a near monopoly in this country with great success. Are we afraid of throwing more money at a problem only to see diminishing results?
WashJeff on November 13, 2009 at 9:42 AM
As long as we get one hour of access daily to the prison internet cafe, I’m ok with it.
Patrick S on November 13, 2009 at 9:43 AM
If you consider welfare a virtual prison…than yes the government can.

“They” already do. It’s called a W-2 and a 1040.
Fletch54 on November 13, 2009 at 9:44 AM
Doesn’t matter. Theirs is a false consciousness. They don’t know what’s best for them. Only we know what’s best for them. What’s best for them is socialized medicine in a totalitarian socialist state. If needed, we will cram it down their throats for their own good.

This putrid bunch wouldn’t care if 90% of the country thought that government had no business trying to run healthcare. The Democrats have their two-year window, and damn it, they’re going to take advantage of it. They seem to think that even if the government will wind up being in GOP hands for the next forty years, the healthcare legislation and cap-and-trade and all the rest will be unrepealable.
