Patterico
How Glenn Greenwald smeared Allahpundit and me
Greenwald’s implication is clear: right-wing blogger Patterico shouldn’t have recommended Allahpundit’s coverage — and right-wing blogger Glenn Reynolds shouldn’t have linked Patterico’s recommendation of Allahpundit.
If only those right-wing bloggers had warned their readers to be skeptical and avoid jumping to conclusions . . .
But wait! What’s that little ellipsis in Greenwald’s quotation of my post? Why, I do believe that’s an indication that he left something out of my quote! Let’s just look at that whole quote to see what Greenwald chose to omit, shall we?

Weak argument. A lie is a lie, even if there’s one other person in the room, you defend your reputation.
John the Libertarian on November 7, 2009 at 6:46 PM
[M]y point is that for bloggers to blog about other bloggers’ criticism of their blogging is self-indulgent. Which is all this is. One blogger dissing the blogging of another blogger.
As opposed to what you’re doing, which is one commenter dissing the blogging of a blogger dissing the blogging of another blogger. That is anything but trivial or self-indulgent — because it’s you doing it.
Patterico on November 7, 2009 at 6:48 PM
So really, it gets even more petty. Not only is the headline about the blogger who other bloggers don’t like, but now headlines are about commentators that bloggers don’t like? LOL. If this circle gets any smaller, our parents will get involved. Whatever you do, don’t go after my cat, Rascal. Say anything about him and I will call up your mother and we will have a sit down about your behavior.
This is the petty gossip dynamic of Myspace.
keep the change on November 7, 2009 at 6:52 PM
How does Mr. Greenwald believe that this adds to his credibility? No one likes to be lied about and both of these gentlemen have positions that require them to be considered honest brokers of the facts. I hope Mr. Greenwald will admit his mistake.
Cindy Munford on November 7, 2009 at 6:54 PM
keep the change seems to be overlooking the entire smear.
SouthernGent on November 7, 2009 at 6:54 PM
And little green racists will link it approvingly and wonder the same thing.
Laura on November 7, 2009 at 6:55 PM
Check his IP Allah– It’s probably another Glenn Greenwaldo sockpuppet!
CultureWar on November 7, 2009 at 6:56 PM
The difference is, I am not a blogger. I don’t run a political blog and post the headlines. If I did, I’d have more substantive things to blog about other than what others are blogging about me. This is what I mean about living in a small microworld. Eventually, the bloggers themselves think they are the news.
Not only that, but they care what an anonymous commentator thinks of the situation. That really takes the cake.
keep the change on November 7, 2009 at 6:56 PM
“It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it”
……Benjamin Franklin.
BTW AP you did a great job on Thursday with your updates. It kept all of us at the ralley in DC totally informed as we made our way home and thru the airports.
Knucklehead on November 7, 2009 at 7:00 PM
keep the change,
What is more petty? A troll who thinks people should not bother to defend their reputations from a smear published at a site that gets millions of unique vistors monthly.
What is more petty? A troll who demands that HotAir “talk about the news,” as though there aren’t 37 headline pieces on the front page at this moment.
Again, if this place is too small and insignificant for you to worry about, why do you even visit, let alone comment? Other than the fact that you personify petty?
Karl on November 7, 2009 at 7:01 PM
Nobody outside the small microworld of the political blogosphere has any idea who . . . Glenn Beck . . . is . . .
– keep the change
Jeez, keep the change, there goes your credibility. I think plenty of people know who Glenn Beck is. Anyone who claims he is a minor figure, as you claim above, is not worth listening to.
Patterico on November 7, 2009 at 7:02 PM
. . . I don’t . . . have more substantive things to blog about other than what others are blogging about me.
– keep the change
There goes your whole argument. The hypocrisy is stunning. First you reprimand us for blogging about ourselves — and then you claim that the most important thing to talk about is . . . YOU.
So you think Glenn Beck is a nobody, and you think YOU are the most important thing to talk about.
And you expect us to listen to you?
Patterico on November 7, 2009 at 7:04 PM
Somebody just farted.
John the Libertarian on November 7, 2009 at 7:05 PM
As though there aren’t dozens of headlines on the front page. But rather than blog yourself, you come here to whine, free-riding on the effort Allahpundit puts into the site.
Karl on November 7, 2009 at 7:07 PM
How often do you read this site? I blog about robots sometimes. The newest headline right now is about girls knocking each over at a soccer match. Honestly, you’re the one who needs to lighten up.
Are you leaving these tsk-tsk comments in every thread involving less-than-important news items? If not, why single out this one?
Allahpundit on November 7, 2009 at 7:07 PM
Well done! The power of ellipses…
John the Libertarian on November 7, 2009 at 7:08 PM
BTW, I hate it when Rush Limabugh talks about golf.
STICK TO THE ISSUES!!!1eleventy1!!!
Karl on November 7, 2009 at 7:09 PM
Honestly, you’re the one who needs to lighten up.
You’re talking to someone who, by his own words (quoted by me above) has claimed that Glenn Beck is a nobody, while he himself is important.
I think “keep the change” has demonstrated that his priorities, and his sense of his own worth, are WAAAAY out of balance.
Patterico on November 7, 2009 at 7:09 PM
Yeah, Allahpundit’s so irrelevant, he gets quoted by the NYT.
flipflop on November 7, 2009 at 7:12 PM
Ew.
Karl on November 7, 2009 at 7:14 PM
The audience for Glenn Beck: nearly 3 million.
The audience for “keep the change”: zilch.
Yet “keep the change” says nobody has any idea who Glenn Beck is, and that the most substantive thing he can think of to blog about is what others are blogging about him.
Hoo-kay then.
Patterico on November 7, 2009 at 7:15 PM
BTW, speaking of Limbaugh, after getting blocked on an NFL deal, think Rush regrets not having gone after Internet liars years ago?
Karl on November 7, 2009 at 7:21 PM
…I am…a… mean… small… anonymous commentator…
keep the change on November 7, 2009 at 6:56 PM
power of ellipses!
John the Libertarian on November 7, 2009 at 7:21 PM
Be careful, John. “keep the change” thinks he’s more important and widely known than Glenn Beck. You cross an ego like that at your peril.
Patterico on November 7, 2009 at 7:24 PM
“And Cain slew his brother, Abel….Go and do thou likewise.”
God, as quoted in Glenn Greenwald’s elided Bible.
notropis on November 7, 2009 at 7:26 PM
LOL! I think he took his toys to another sandbox.
John the Libertarian on November 7, 2009 at 7:28 PM
He did get mighty quiet, didn’t he? Guess he didn’t appreciate my pouncing on his declarations that he is more important than Glenn Beck.
Patterico on November 7, 2009 at 7:30 PM
Sounds like more of that “fake, but accurate” that the libs like so much. Patterico and AP should count their blessings. At least GG didn’t totally make up obnoxious, racist comments; he just took everything completely out of context.
I’m waiting for Patterico and/or AP to take one of GG’s posts and play merry he11 with it! They may win a Nobel Peace Prize!
rmgraha on November 7, 2009 at 8:08 PM
This is outrageous.
GW_SS-Delta on November 7, 2009 at 8:18 PM
This was not just some petty dispute over disagreements between bloggers. This was a deliberate smear. I don’t always agree with AP, but he did a great job keeping everyone up to date on the story, while giving his assessment of how credible each news item was.
Greenwald apparently stripped out every caution from AP just to accuse him of spreading false information.
It’s a slimy thing to do to anyone.
didymus on November 7, 2009 at 8:33 PM
Rich, gooey irony, from Socketysockpuppet’s home page:
Mind you, he’s talking about National Review’s Michael Ledeen and about George Stephanopoulos there.
Cognitive dissonance would be a step up.
Laura on November 7, 2009 at 8:39 PM
While I completely agree that reputations must be defended, etc. and 100% think that this headline is a legit one, I think going after keep the change like this is a bit much. Especially the “serial pedophile” bit. I think his point about a commenter taking issue with what bloggers post being different from bloggers defending each other from the lies of other bloggers is a valid one.
OneGyT on November 7, 2009 at 8:46 PM
glen greenwald…the whole reason the term/sock puppet/was coined, because he mastered that, with his hundereds on every site.Only on the left, would this guy be considered anything but sea money droppings.
theTarCzar on November 7, 2009 at 9:13 PM
I don’t agree with AP a lot but any man who wouldn’t defend himself has no cojones so kudos to AP on this one.
beachgirlusa on November 7, 2009 at 9:27 PM
As Limbaugh would say, I was demonstrating absurdity by being absurd.
Karl on November 7, 2009 at 9:36 PM
I don’t understand people beyotching about AP wanting his credibility maintained. As was mentioned, some of the big boys with big audiences mention AP and Ed. Some of the big boys on the other side pay attention to Senor Sockpuppet. Furthermore, it’s not just AP’s reputation on the line, though that is the main issue here. When talking to people who might be interested in informing themselves, I recommend a very small handful of sites for them to check out. HA is one of them. If people think HA is untrustworthy, they’ll think the same of my recommendations. Then there’s the little matter of standing up for what’s right, no matter if we like the person involved, dislike, or have no opinion at all.
bikermailman on November 7, 2009 at 10:23 PM
Same here.
Good point.
beachgirlusa on November 7, 2009 at 10:33 PM
All true. And yet…what is it they say about the hair-pulling fights in academia? The fights are so vicious because the stakes are so low?
I dare you to find a busy street and ask the first 100 people you see if they know who Glenn Greenwald is. I dare you.
Nobody wants to be slandered, and I’d kick Greenwald’s ass just because he so badly seems to need an ass-kicking. But if you’re seriously only worried about the people who actually know who this buttsniffer is, then it’s a split between the people already hate him and the people who will hate him as soon as he lies about them.
Meh.
Jaibones on November 7, 2009 at 11:18 PM
Patterico is being too nice here. GG deserves no brownie points for speaking up against Obama. Except for Hannity, Republican pundits do this all the time with no fanfare.
Glenn Greenwald lied. He deliberately omitted words changing the context of the quotes he was using to bolster a rather petty point. I recommend a public form of humiliation similar to the stockades.
Could you be more obviously jealous? Each of the three bloggers in question likely rivals the readership of whatever fish-wrap is lining your cage.
Taking you at your word, what kind of guy injects himself to a self-described girl-fight?
Commit lamicide.
The Race Card on November 8, 2009 at 12:00 AM
He should be forced to read his own blog.
The Race Card on November 8, 2009 at 12:02 AM
Yo Greenwad,
From Geo’s News Wire we some updates you can monitor for accuracy.
12:51 AM Pacific Time
UPDATE: Greebwad is a species of Seaslug…confirmation pending.
UPDATE: Glenn Greendolt is NOT a Seaslug, I repeat NOT a Seaslug. But we have just leaned from our sources that he has no dick…unconfirmed…checking sources…
UPDATE: Correction…sources tell us that Glenn G. still has no dick and he wears ladies panties…checking Interpol for contra-indications, so far none.
UPDATE: G. Greenwart does in fact have a dick but it is prepubescent…confirmed…checking sources.
Geochelone on November 8, 2009 at 3:58 AM
Thanks, Patterico. Glenn Greenwald is not as talented, ethical, or honest as either you or Allahpundit. it’s just that simple.
Loxodonta on November 8, 2009 at 7:55 AM
I agree with Patterico, always follow AP. The best blogger around at following breaking news.
Don’t let that go to your head AP, I’ll undoubtedly be slamming you over a Palin thread later today.
conservnut on November 8, 2009 at 8:54 AM
I hope nobody ever spreads lies about you on the Internet. Because you’ll have no cause to complain, not being a household name.
