We oughta be forced to track the years from Moho’s birth, making it the Year of the Psychopathic Pedophile Prophet 1438 rather than AD 2008. That way, we would always be reminded that Islam is stuck on Medieval.

Mekka Time! Can’t Touch This!
One geologist argued that unlike other longitudes, Mecca’s was in perfect alignment to magnetic north.
Which is more important than true north in what way?
A prominent cleric, Sheikh Youssef al-Qaradawy, said modern science had at last provided evidence that Mecca was the true centre of the Earth
Sounds like the Mahometan equivalent of our own SaintOlaf.
proof, he said, of the greatness of the Muslim “qibla” – the Arabic word for the direction Muslims turn to when they pray.
Even though Mo had originally said it was Jerusalem. (Apparently he changed it to the pre-Islamic Kaaba as one of his concessions to paganism.)
Let me stop ya right there chief, (the first two words of the tag line) there’s no such thing as a ‘muslim scientist’. If there is a scientist who thinks he’s a muslim, he’s an apostate and not a true muslim.
I just left Rihyad, drivin in a Kia, Just about to lose my mind.
I was goin’ on to Medina, Maybe on to J- town, Where all the joo’s have got to go.
My baby says I’m crazy, my momma says I’m lazy, I was going to show them all this time.
Cause you know I am a fool an I don’t need no more schoolin’ I was born to put my forehead on the floor.
Livin on Mecca time, I’m livin on Mecca time, Well you know I’ve been through it, when I set my watch back to it.
Livin on Mecca time.

Given that the Mecca watch runs backwards, it is quite appropriate for Islam….

I think AP can vouch that most NY’ers who would be surprised to find that NYC is NOT the center of the Earth.
“Gabriel brings to the sun a garment of luminosity from the light of Allah’s Throne according to the measure of the hours of the day. The garment is longer in the summer and shorter in the winter, and of intermediate length in autumn and spring. The sun puts on that garment as one of you here puts on his clothes.”

It’s frustrating. They just keep suggesting more and more accommodations be made on their behalf to see how far we’ll bend over backward. Or perhaps forward.
What’s the importance of the center? I can imagine asking the imams, “scientists,” and scholars, “You say M3cca’s the center of the Earth. So what?”
Besides, everywhere you go, you see that the world surrounds you in all directions, right? You’re at the center. Everyone else says they’re at the center, and I’m the only one willing to tell you the truth. It’s you. And as I said, so what?
“A prominent cleric, Sheikh Youssef al-Qaradawy, said modern science had at last provided evidence that Mecca was the true centre of the Earth” He then went on to warn his zealots “not to sail to close to the edge or they might fall off the Earth.”

The underlying belief is that scientific truths were also revealed in the Muslim holy book, and it is the work of scholars to unearth and publicise the textual evidence.
Sounds like the research in the Soviet Union to prove that the Communist brain was biologically superior to the non-Communist brain.
Hey, since the magnetic north is always moving, does that mean mecca is moving also? Lets let them all go to the center of the Earth and let allah sort them out.
Blowback

How about we just get rid of Mecca altogether?
darwin on April 21, 2008 at 4:35 PM
I thought the core was the true center of the earth.
It’s also much easier to keep track of which direction the core is than which direction to face towards Mecca.

I think we should go with the Annus Mundi (it’s now 7516 according the Byzantines, less for Jews). Either A.M. or Olympiads, it’s hard to say.
