Remember he’s Joker in the new Batman film that comes out this summer. That movie will probably make double what it was originally supposed to just because it’s his last movie
froghat on January 22, 2008 at 4:56 PM
I don’t think I ever seen him in a movie where he was bad – he pretty much rocked the screen in every role he had, even if the movie around him wasn’t so hot. What awful news. And he left behind a child, which makes it more tragic.
Mindcrime on January 22, 2008 at 4:56 PM
Pills were found near his body, according to the NYT.
I was so sad to hear this. And on top of Fred dropping out. This day sucks. =(
Yep, definitely a sucky day. He was only 28 years old, a good actor, and had a little girl who’ll never know her dad.

Poor Boy — such a short life.
EJDolbow on January 22, 2008 at 6:08 PM
Very tragic. Reminds me a bit of River Phoenix.

Brad Renfro.
SouthernDem on January 22, 2008 at 6:34 PM
Sad. I got the feeling he was a decent, talented guy who seemed genuinely uplifted by the birth of his daughter and (if you can judge by the pictures you see on celebrity blogs) spent a lot of time with her and her mother doing normal things. I liked him.
The old wives tale about celebs dying in threes. Susan Pleshette last week and Ledger today. Wasn’t there another one last week?
Rams owner Georgia Frontiere qualifies.
Mike D. on January 22, 2008 at 6:59 PM
Totally unexpected. Wow…
Ugly on January 22, 2008 at 7:06 PM
Can’t believe it.
He seemed kinda under control (but so did River Phoenix).
Look at the Batman trailer – he was up for an Oscar for sure.

Yeah, Renfro, but it must be a generational thing. I was thinking of John Stewart, folk rocker and songwriter (”Daydream Believer” for the Monkees).
And Allan Melville, Sam the Butcher from “The Brady Bunch,” pal of Archie Bunker – and voice of Magilla Gorilla – R.I.P.
But I think I’ll miss Pleshette more.

He seemed kinda under control (but so did River Phoenix).
The thing that freaked so many out about RP was that it was drugs, when he had espoused a clean-living vegetarian lifestyle for so long, being the progeny of hippie parents who named their kids things like Leaf and River.
Dropped dead in front of Johnny Depp’s nightclub in (I believe) 1994.
Captain Scarlet on January 22, 2008 at 7:45 PM
I really liked him in The Patriot and A Knight’s Tale.
Blowback

Holy shiat, didn’t see that one coming. That’s a real shocker.
I keep expecting that headline for Britney or Amy Winehouse.
Damn.

jeeeeez didn’t see that coming…

Oh man, Rest in Peace. This is out of no where. Makes his yet-to-be-released work that much more intriguing…

Wow, I never would have guessed. RIP man.
He was great in The Patriot.

I liked him best in 10 Things I Hate About You, esp when he’s singing to Julia Stiles.

Tragic. One of the few actors I could stomach. My prayers go out to his family and particularly to his daughter.
Heath Ledger’s best work in my humble opinion was The Four Feathers.

weird detail, imho: dude was “in an apartment inhabited by Mary Kate Olson”
Mike D. on January 22, 2008 at 5:33 PM
my condolences to his family
RIP
Defector01 on January 22, 2008 at 5:41 PM
I’ve been listening to Fox. Apparently, he was found dead in Mary Kate’s digs.
Wow!
madmonkphotog on January 22, 2008 at 5:44 PM
Fox just said NYT blog is wrong. Police are saying accidental overdose of prescription drugs.
And the apartment is not owned by Mary Kate Olson

Stunned. What a tragedy indeed. His legacy, admittedly a short one, will live on in the screen big and small.
