“Allison Henry clearly had an extraordinary, horrible case,” the doctor says. “But it’s widely estimated that 30 percent of women or more suffer some degree of prolapse in their lifetime.”

Oh, good Lord. I’m an Ob-Gyn and the entire article reads like it was written by Maury Povich or Jerry Springer.
“I was referred to a pelvic floor specialist. She took a look and said, ‘Holy crap — your vagina is falling out of your body, and it’s dragging your bladder and your rectum along with it!’”
Get yourself a new “pelvic floor specialist” lady. I’ve been seeing this on an almost daily basis since 1985 when I was a little toy-doctor (medical student).

THIS IS UNREAL.
blatantblue on November 8, 2009 at 6:32 PM
No, this is very real. I won’t scare you with stories of the medical malpractice visited on my sister during her hysterectomy, but suffice it to say, it wasn’t fun or pretty and will never be the same.
And one reason women don’t tell their doctors about these things is not so much the humiliation of the condition, it’s how they have been treated generally by the medical profession. “Female troubles” are either brushed off as “all in your head, dear” (and I can assure you, that is not my head), or else are explained away as “something you will just have to live with,” since medical science is not in the habit of researching women’s issues.
Guys really couldn’t handle what women deal with physically, so we get the “unreal” comments, but it’s true.
Vaginal prolapse is as common in an ObGyn practice as hemorrhoids. There are varying degrees from minor to severe (windsock syndrome). Three remedies: correct it surgically, use a “pessary” – a medical rubber device to hold things in place, or close the gap (preferred in older women). For centuries women have improvised with everything from small tiny flower pots to (I’ve seen this) light bulbs (Al Gore and I do not approve).

…this is BS.
My wife tells her doctor more than she tells me. When my wife was pregnant, she’d go into the doctor’s office and if she thought something was wrong, ten tests were performed on her at her discretion.
My doctor does the same to me, as I am a healthy individual, if I think somethings wrong, he’ll give me options about what tests they can do and whether or not I want to do them.
I have never had a doctor tell my wife or I that “it’s all in your head”. At that point I might smack the doctor for even insinuating something of that nature.
Pshh.. I pay to much in insurance to be treated like a second hand patient, and our Doctors know it.
And also, I’ve seen to many sick things, with pictures, on this internet, to even have blinked at this story, this ain’t nothin’.
Men can suffer from rectal prolapse. However it is much more common in women.

YOU may never have had a doctor tell you it’s in your head but, other people have. Especially folks with rare conditions. It took me four years to get a diagonsis of acute intermittent porphyria because it is so rare doctors said I couldn’t possibly have it. Even after I finally got a positive test and was more that 100 times the normal limit of porphyrins in my urine. I was still told by a doctor that “despite what you have been told you couldn’t possibly have it. It’s just too rare”.
