Patterico
Greenwald’s implication is clear: right-wing blogger Patterico shouldn’t have recommended Allahpundit’s coverage — and right-wing blogger Glenn Reynolds shouldn’t have linked Patterico’s recommendation of Allahpundit.
If only those right-wing bloggers had warned their readers to be skeptical and avoid jumping to conclusions . . .
But wait! What’s that little ellipsis in Greenwald’s quotation of my post? Why, I do believe that’s an indication that he left something out of my quote! Let’s just look at that whole quote to see what Greenwald chose to omit, shall we?

You can’t penetrate AP, man
just can’t be done
/that can be misconstrued.
blatantblue on November 7, 2009 at 5:44 PM
Gawd. A bunch of bloggers having a teenager angst-style gossip fight.
Nobody cares. Talk about the news, not about yourselves. And certainly don’t talk about yourselves talking about each other.
You are not that important. As a matter of fact, you are not important at all, except to your mother.
keep the change on November 7, 2009 at 5:46 PM
It’s just a blog, folks. Don’t take yourselves so seriously.
faraway on November 7, 2009 at 5:48 PM
Let’s take Greenwald behind the woodshed and beat the hell out of him!
HondaV65 on November 7, 2009 at 5:51 PM
I disagree, faraway, keep the change.. AP deserves defense for exactly the same reason Rush or Palin does. No one’s character deserves to be smeared when they are laboring to do an honest job. I appreciate AP’s work especially on breaking news items. And when it comes to terrorism, the man calls a spade a spade.
The use of ellipses is the equivalent of when Obama says, “Let me be clear”. What follows is a misconstruction.
Spirit of 1776 on November 7, 2009 at 5:51 PM
I’d want to address smears on Salon too
blatantblue on November 7, 2009 at 5:53 PM
You have to defend AP & Patterico. This is the new media and libel here is just as bad as newspaper libel.
Glenn Greenwald is an out and out liar. Never trust him on anything. If he said the sky is blue, I would still look up.
rbj on November 7, 2009 at 5:53 PM
Keep in mind that there are plenty of Big Media reporters who take Greenwald seriously. So he needs to be kept honest.
I would lay into Greenwald with the same vengeance no matter who I caught him smearing like this; I just happened to find out about this smear because one of my readers brought it to my attention.
Patterico on November 7, 2009 at 5:56 PM
This borders on libelous. What a piece of scum Greenwald is.
John the Libertarian on November 7, 2009 at 5:56 PM
Hey, lets not jump to conclusions even after all the facts are in. Just forget about it.
BL@KBIRD on November 7, 2009 at 5:59 PM
This is like the msm celebrities who believe they themselves are the news. Everybody knows who glenn beck is. Nobody outside the small microworld of the political blogosphere has any idea who the other names are. Hell, one is just a pseudonym. And unlike Glenn Beck, this is not about the right going after obama. For that we defend Beck.
keep the change on November 7, 2009 at 6:01 PM
Don’t like it? Don’t read it. And don’t lecture me on how nobody cares when it’s not you being smeared. Plenty of “serious” journalists take Greenwald seriously. I don’t want my reputation dragged through the mud by him; good for Patterico for trying to get the story straight.
Allahpundit on November 7, 2009 at 6:01 PM
Absolute proof that you don’t know what you’re talking about. Greenwald writes for Salon, which I think sucks but plenty of leftists and media types take seriously as a web zine. As Gleen himself will remind you (endlessly), he’s been quoted by Russ Feingold on the floor of the Senate. Again: I’d like to see how you’d react if you were smeared by a prominent “serious” blogger. Would you really pass up the chance to correct the record? Bull.
Allahpundit on November 7, 2009 at 6:03 PM
So only apply principle after it crosses a threshold of public consciousness? I disagree.
Spirit of 1776 on November 7, 2009 at 6:04 PM
Good lord, really? As if there weren’t enough reasons to ignore Big media already.

I have to throw my hat in with AP on this one. I don’t begrudge him his anonymouse blogging, but his anonymity makes his reputation all the more important, in my humble opinion.
gryphon202 on November 7, 2009 at 6:08 PM
No, let’s do it in front of the woodshed in plain sight – pour encourager les autres.
Greenwald seems utterly incapable of arguing honestly. He needed to be called out for it. We need a new internet verb on a par with “to Fisk” for Greenwald but the guy is such a dishonest crapweasel on so many levels it would be hard even to know where to start.
Laura on November 7, 2009 at 6:09 PM
You need to take a step back and get out into the real world. Most people have never heard of you nor the others. This is a very small world you live in. As I said, outside of the political blogosphere, these names don’t exist. This is like a bunch of girls fighting on Facebook.
keep the change on November 7, 2009 at 6:11 PM
Well, it’d be nice to be able to drop an e-mail to Greenwald and have him issue a correction, but since his distortions were deliberate, that ain’t going to happen.
So where else will the record be corrected? If your only megaphone is your blog, that’s what you have to use.
I, for one, appreciate this reinforcement of my opinion of Greenwald. Maybe some of the more honest MSM types will start noticing his total weaselly-ness, eventually, and he’ll be relegated to the status he deserves. But only if it’s repeatedly pointed out.
notropis on November 7, 2009 at 6:12 PM

Yep, I think HA is now dangerously close to getting more visits per day than “major professional media figures” like Keith Olbermann get for their prime time TV shows.
forest on November 7, 2009 at 6:20 PM
Greenwald is usually great at holding the establishment media’s feet to the fire. It’s too bad that he occasionally makes mistakes about bloggers.
The Dean on November 7, 2009 at 6:20 PM
And yet you comment here. Why not go elsewhere, with all of the serious big boys?
I think I may start devoting my Greenroom posts to lying about you, and deleting your responses, just to see how you like it.
Karl on November 7, 2009 at 6:20 PM
If you act like “it’s just a blog” and let crap like Greenwald pulled slide, everyone will treat it like “it’s just a blog”. If Gleen wants to take on Instapundit, Patterico, and Allahpundit all at once he’d better damn well get his ducks in a row before he does so.
see-dubya on November 7, 2009 at 6:21 PM
Greenwald is a douche, and an increasingly irrelevant one by the looks of this. How is what he’s doing here materially different from a tabloid gossip columnist?
As for those saying this political blog world is so small that it doesn’t matter, that’s crap and I think you know it. HA is one of the widest-read conservative blogs and even if the average voter is unaware of this blog, a lot of pundits and policy makers read it.
flipflop on November 7, 2009 at 6:24 PM
HotAir.com has more than double the circulation of my local newspaper, The Times-Picayune. (The only newspaper in New Orleans.) Now, considering how many reporters work for the Times-Pic (not less than 30 by a quick scan of the bylines), you try to figure out Allahpundit’s relative nameworthiness. Yes, his online reputation is well worth defending.

blatantblue on November 7, 2009 at 6:27 PM
When people ask me what I sites I visit on the internet, it’s hard to explain because nobody I’e talked to has heard of Hotair. Or The Daily Kos. Or Andrew Sullivan. Or Markos Malitos, or however you spell it. Or any of the rest. These names don’t mean anything to 300 million Americans. We think they do because we come here. Hell, most Americans don’t even know who Harry Reid is. They think he plays for the Pirates, but they are not sure. Ever watch Leno’s Jay walking? That’s an eyeopener.
That’s the real world. So my point is that for bloggers to blog about other bloggers’ criticism of their blogging is self-indulgent. Which is all this is. One blogger dissing the blogging of another blogger. It’s not like someone is calling someone else a child molester, murderer, peeping tom. If so, take it to court. Otherwise, get on with the news.

I’m not surprised. Kind of funny, a leftie nitwit that comments on my little old blog referenced Greenwald some time ago for his argument and got all pissy when I dismissed sockpuppet Greenwald.
aikidoka on November 7, 2009 at 6:34 PM
Go right ahead. Nobody cares. That’s one of my two points. The other point was that this is criticism, not some smear about beastility.

HotAir.com Had Almost 1/3 the Traffic of the L.A. Times’s Entire Web Site in October
If Greenwald wanted to disagree with AP on the merits – and God knows, AP takes plenty of heat from his own commenters, when their complaints are fair and when they’re not, and he does so graciously – that’d be fine. But this is sneaky, dishonest and indefensible. In other words, typical Greenwald.

No, GG blatantly distorted what Allahpundit wrote, which is not “criticism.” It’s falsely impugning their integrity and reputations, which GG feels safe to do from Brazil.

[M]y point is that for bloggers to blog about other bloggers’ criticism of their blogging is self-indulgent. Which is all this is. One blogger dissing the blogging of another blogger.
As opposed to what you’re doing, which is one commenter dissing the blogging of a blogger dissing the blogging of another blogger. That is anything but trivial or self-indulgent — because it’s you doing it.
Patterico on November 7, 2009 at 6:48 PM
So really, it gets even more petty. Not only is the headline about the blogger who other bloggers don’t like, but now headlines are about commentators that bloggers don’t like? LOL. If this circle gets any smaller, our parents will get involved. Whatever you do, don’t go after my cat, Rascal. This is the petty gossip dynamic of Myspace.

How does Mr. Greenwald believe that this adds to his credibility? No one likes to be lied about and both of these gentlemen have positions that require them to be considered honest brokers of the facts. I hope Mr. Greenwald will admit his mistake.

CultureWar on November 7, 2009 at 6:56 PM
The difference is, I am not a blogger. I don’t run a political blog and post the headlines. If I did, I’d have more substantive things to blog about other than what others are blogging about me. This is what I mean about living in a small microworld. Eventually, the bloggers themselves think they are the news.
Not only that, but they care what an anonymous commentator thinks of the situation. That really takes the cake.

keep the change,
What is more petty? A troll who thinks people should not bother to defend their reputations from a smear published at a site that gets millions of unique vistors monthly.
What is more petty? A troll who demands that HotAir “talk about the news,” as though there aren’t 37 headline pieces on the front page at this moment.
Again, if this place is too small and insignificant for you to worry about, why do you even visit, let alone comment? Other than the fact that you personify petty?
Karl on November 7, 2009 at 7:01 PM
Nobody outside the small microworld of the political blogosphere has any idea who . . . Glenn Beck . . . is . . .

Jeez, keep the change, there goes your credibility. I think plenty of people know who Glenn Beck is. Anyone who claims he is a minor figure, as you claim above, is not worth listening to.
Patterico on November 7, 2009 at 7:02 PM
. . . I don’t . . . have more substantive things to blog about other than what others are blogging about me.
– keep the change
There goes your whole argument. The hypocrisy is stunning. First you reprimand us for blogging about ourselves — and then you claim that the most important thing to talk about is . . . YOU.
So you think Glenn Beck is a nobody, and you think YOU are the most important thing to talk about.
And you expect us to listen to you?
Patterico on November 7, 2009 at 7:04 PM
Somebody just farted.
John the Libertarian on November 7, 2009 at 7:05 PM

Karl on November 7, 2009 at 7:07 PM
How often do you read this site? I blog about robots sometimes. The newest headline right now is about girls knocking each over at a soccer match. Honestly, you’re the one who needs to lighten up.
Are you leaving these tsk-tsk comments in every thread involving less-than-important news items? If not, why single out this one?

Honestly, you’re the one who needs to lighten up.
You’re talking to someone who, by his own words (quoted by me above) has claimed that Glenn Beck is a nobody, while he himself is important.
I think “keep the change” has demonstrated that his priorities, and his sense of his own worth, are WAAAAY out of balance.
Patterico on November 7, 2009 at 7:09 PM

Hoo-kay then.

GW_SS-Delta on November 7, 2009 at 8:18 PM
This was not just some petty dispute over disagreements between bloggers. This was a deliberate smear. I don’t always agree with AP, but he did a great job keeping everyone up to date on the story, while giving his assessment of how credible each news item was.
Greenwald apparently stripped out every caution from AP just to accuse him of spreading false information.
It’s a slimy thing to do to anyone.
didymus on November 7, 2009 at 8:33 PM
Rich, gooey irony, from Socketysockpuppet’s home page:
Mind you, he’s talking about National Review’s Michael Ledeen and about George Stephanopoulos there.
Cognitive dissonance would be a step up.

While I completely agree that reputations must be defended, etc. and 100% think that this headline is a legit one, I think going after keep the change like this is a bit much. Especially the “serial pedophile” bit. I think his point about a commenter taking issue with what bloggers post being different from bloggers defending each other from the lies of other bloggers is a valid one.

As Limbaugh would say, I was demonstrating absurdity by being absurd.
Karl on November 7, 2009 at 9:36 PM
I don’t understand people beyotching about AP wanting his credibility maintained. As was mentioned, some of the big boys with big audiences mention AP and Ed. Some of the big boys on the other side pay attention to Senor Sockpuppet. Furthermore, it’s not just AP’s reputation on the line, though that is the main issue here. When talking to people who might be interested in informing themselves, I recommend a very small handful of sites for them to check out. HA is one of them. If people think HA is untrustworthy, they’ll think the same of my recommendations. Then there’s the little matter of standing up for what’s right, no matter if we like the person involved, dislike, or have no opinion at all.
bikermailman on November 7, 2009 at 10:23 PM
Same here.
Good point.
beachgirlusa on November 7, 2009 at 10:33 PM
All true. And yet…what is it they say about the hair-pulling fights in academia? The fights are so vicious because the stakes are so low?
I dare you to find a busy street and ask the first 100 people you see if they know who Glenn Greenwald is. I dare you.
Nobody wants to be slandered, and I’d kick Greenwald’s ass just because he so badly seems to need an ass-kicking. But if you’re seriously only worried about the people who actually know who this buttsniffer is, then it’s a split between the people already hate him and the people who will hate him as soon as he lies about them.
Meh.
Jaibones on November 7, 2009 at 11:18 PM
Patterico is being too nice here. GG deserves no brownie points for speaking up against Obama. Except for Hannity, Republican pundits do this all the time with no fanfare.
Glenn Greenwald lied. He deliberately omitted words changing the context of the quotes he was using to bolster a rather petty point. I recommend a public form of humiliation similar to the stockades.
Could you be more obviously jealous? Each of the three bloggers in question likely rivals the readership of whatever fish-wrap is lining your cage.
Taking you at your word, what kind of guy injects himself to a self-described girl-fight?
Commit lamicide.
