White House press secretary Robert Gibbs today said that Republican gubernatorial victories in Virginia and New Jersey do not portend anything for President Obama, but the dynamics and the Democratic candidate’s success in the special election in Upstate New York has ramifications for the GOP.

How do you spell Robert Gibbs?

It was a principled 45% Mr. Gibbs.
Mr. Owens will be running for the seat again in less than a year. I doubt you will still have your job Gibbs.
portlandon on November 4, 2009 at 11:47 AM
It seems it can get you every statewide executive office in Virginia and a boot out the door for John Corzine, too.
fiatboomer on November 4, 2009 at 11:48 AM
what percentage will obama appearance get you?

Nothing good for the Democrat party came out of yesterday…wishing otherwise does not make it so.
Asher on November 4, 2009 at 11:48 AM
By November 5, 2010, Gibbs will warn us all about the increasing intensity of the GOP’s “civil war.”
He will again remind us, that the Republican takeover of the House means nothing, and has nothing to do with Obama. Obama, after all, had promised to work with both democrats and republicans.
Revenant on November 4, 2009 at 11:49 AM
Just imagine if the GoP would have chosen someone other than a Democrat-lite!

Let’s see how a smooth election process with a primary goes in 2010. 49% of the vote will most likely not get you victory in 2010.

I’m getting dizzy from the spin.
Funny thing is most conservatives don’t consider NY-23 that big of a loss. We won when Dede what’s her name dropped out and proved she was to the left of RINO.
gophergirl on November 4, 2009 at 11:50 AM
NJ proves that six presidential visits can get you a 4% loss…lovely spin ROBERT.

Gibbs: So, Barry. What should I say about last night’s results?
Obama: Oh I dunno. Say something retarded, like you always do. And then laugh like a moron.
Gibbs. Gotcha.
lorien1973 on November 4, 2009 at 11:51 AM
I hope he really believes this. Spells doom for the White House.
karlant on November 4, 2009 at 11:52 AM
Actually, it sends a message to the GOP to stop doing back door deals and telling Conservatives to like whatever they do. We won’t stand for it anymore, and we’ve proven it.
Had GOP picked a regular conservative, rather than a liberal, they would have won over a majority of the votes (if you add Scuzzy’s votes, Hoffman’s votes, and a few thousand from Owens who were angry Scuzzy voters).
But I like how they pretend that NJ and Virginia (and Maine losing the Gay vote) means nothing to Obama and DC, but this means THE WORLD to the GOP.
Enoxo on November 4, 2009 at 11:52 AM
Way to go Baghdad Gibbs.

Gibbs is classless… Can you imagine Tony Snow saying something like this?
barrythrowslikeagirl on November 4, 2009 at 11:53 AM
“GOP civil war” is delusional propaganda. Since when is an Obama supporter a “moderate” in the GOP? It’s funny that extremists and outliars (and just plain liars), such as Obama’s administration, think that they have any insights in the thinking of real Americans.
BottomLine5 on November 4, 2009 at 11:53 AM
This is good. Stay the course Obama. BJ Clinton would be cutting taxes and passing welfare reform today but you go your way… LOL!
Caper29 on November 4, 2009 at 11:53 AM
By Gibbs logic then, electing Obama/Democrats proves we get 10% unemployment, gotcha!

Typical talking points… Tim Kaine was on the Today show spouting the same crap. They don’t want to talk about NJ and VA, only that the GOP is divided and right wing nuts like Palin, Beck, et al are splintering the party which means permanent majorities for Dems. I beg to differ…
davek70 on November 4, 2009 at 11:58 AM
What do VA and NJ tell you? That socialism can get you kicked to the curb in the next election !
Honestly, I think I’d have chosen Owens over that Dede thing.

Yeah, we got bent over the table and got royally screwed. Man, that really sucked last night, didn’t it? F**kin’ Deeds and Corzine. Incompetent retards. Thank god that democrat – who is against our healthcare plan – in NY-23 won. That was just excellent.
Come on.

These election showed NOTHING. Remember? That was your spin yesterday.
What did the NJ and VA elections tell you, Gibby? That anger can get you 51% and 60% of the vote respectively? Or no? If not, why not?

No – just show Democrats the door en masse next year.
Why – you want to burn something?

The question to throw back at Gibbs would be how closely does the president expect Owens to follow Obama’s policies?
The spotlight on NY-23 also puts the spotlight on how Owens votes in 2010, since he’ll only have nine months to build up a record to justify re-election. That means even though he’ll have the least seniority of any Democrat, he’ll be one of the ones most closely watched, and based on Tuesday’s results in New Jersey and Virginia and the general make-up of NY-23, he may not think being very closely associated with Barack Obama is a way to be more than a one-year Beltway wonder.

I agree. How does one put in the effort to vote, but not know what is going on? Whether a D or R voter, that’s just sad.
WashJeff on November 4, 2009 at 12:09 PM
Nah. We thought about showing anger the way liberals do. You know, throw rocks, march in the streets, wear bandanas over our face and destroy some property. Maybe bomb a police station, or the Pentagon, since that’s what Obama’s friends do.
But then we realized, that’s just not us. So instead, we’ll have a couple picnics, with signs saying things like “don’t tread on me” and “God bless America”. And then, on election day, we’ll vote.
You’d be surprised how loud a message can be, when delivered on election day.

Love your stereotypes. Though I live in Nebraska, I’m actually from Illinois, where for fun we elect corrupt politicians and watch big cities go to hell because of the incompetency of the people running those cities and school districts.
I’ve never tipped a cow, but it would be better than what the kids on the South Side of Chicago–Barry’s paradise–do to each other after school.
I’ll take the relatively safe streets of Lincoln over Chicago any day.
And I’ll sure as hell take my politicians–even the Democrats here–over the ones from Illinois.

I heard somewhere that some of Dede’s votes were mail ins.. sent in before she withdrew.
stenwin77 on November 4, 2009 at 12:22 PM
I don’t disagree with you, but because of redistricting and re-numbering, that seat is not necessarily the same one over-and-over.
For instance, I grew up in Gerald Solomon’s seat, which neighbored McHugh’s. Because New York is losing proportionate population, my family that remains there is in a new seat with a different congressional number, even though they have not moved in 50 years. Solomon’s seat was the 29th, then the 24th, then the 22nd. Only by the grace of congressional redistricting was it never numbered the 23rd.

thevastlane on November 4, 2009 at 12:26 PM
Mr. Gibbs is free to maintain that cocky attitude into next year’s mid-term elections. We’ll see who’s left angry and frustrated when the balance of power dramatically shifts to the conservative view.
The RINOs are kidding themselves if they believe this is a confirmation that Scozzafava was a good candidate. Hoffman is far from a right wing extremist. Had the GOP pumped $900,000 into electing him and not the “moderate” choice, who out there genuinely believes he wouldn’t have been elected.
jdflorida on November 4, 2009 at 12:26 PM
Last February, neither party had a clue that the people were about to revolt. Now, 9 months later the revolt has led to a liberal GOP candidate being forced out of the race and a conservative, unheard of until a month or two ago to garner 45% of the vote. It has led to two Republican governors-elect — one in the bluest of the blue states. It ain’t over folks. Keep up the pressure!

correction, Herr Gibbels:
Resolve (what you call anger)can crush one of the two major Statist parties and get you within a whisker of the other, even when both Statist parties gang up on you, as they are likely to do more and more. In other words, its a heck of a start!
james23 on November 4, 2009 at 12:30 PM
It also proves that, even in Rust Belt New York, being a far-left liberal Republican will get you…about five percent of the vote.
This is not the “conservatism that can win” that Dave Frum had in mind.

You’re welcome. I enjoyed your wikipost, too. Fun to read how the 23rd slowly inched its way from Manhattan in the 1910s, through the Bronx, upstate, and finally all the way to the Canadian border by the 21st century.
