Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Tuesday that the threat of sanctions against Iran would be counterproductive, resisting U.S. efforts to win agreement for measures if Iran fails to prove its nuclear program is peaceful.
Lavrov spoke following talks with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is trying to gauge Moscow’s willingness to join the U.S. in imposing sanctions if Iran fails to come clean on its nuclear activities.
Lavrov said Russia’s position is that under current conditions even the threat of sanctions against Iran would be counterproductive.

Glad we trashed that missile defense system and got something back from Russia for it.

Russia: Hey, you want peace with Iran? You got the Nobel Peace Prize, you figure it out on your own.

It’s okay, because now they like us.

How you feeling now Obama, is that peace prize working out for you?

This must all be part of the grand scheme on the Obama team’s part. Smart power or something.

The Nobel Prize Committee will not be pleased, Mr. Putin.
I’m sure he cares………..

I’m certainly overjoyed to see our “leaders” sucking up to our great buddyroos, the Russians!
What’s next from the Osama Obama/Shrillery Clinton Surrender Tour?
My guess is that Israel has finally been abandoned, and they’d better look to their own defense.
MrScribbler on October 13, 2009 at 12:42 PM
Obama and HIllary, just too stupid to see that chaos in Iran benefits Russia via higher oil prices. Iran knows that Russia will not blink an eye if Iran shoots a missile towards Russia.

I credit Obama’s Cairo Speech.

Let me be clear: I really suck at this diplomacy thing.

The Russian government sure seems to like stirring the pot.

Yeah, sanctions are premature, lets just wait until Israel is a giant hole in the ground and then we will talk again. Where do these people get their lunatic ideas?
fourdeucer on October 13, 2009 at 1:01 PM
Russia is probably correct saying that sanctions against Iran won’t stop them from building nuke weapons.
If Iran is just months away from making a nuclear weapon then what sanction could possibly get them to stop them?
The only thing that would stop the Iran nuke weapon program or cause some serious problems is military action or a total change in Iranian government.

Precisely, bridgetown. Barry knifes the Poles and the Czechs in the back and his reward is getting pantsed by the Russians.
I’d hope that he’d respond now by announcing the missle defense deal is back on, but that is the last tiny sliver of “hope” that I can muster for the Nobel Laureate President’s foreign policy acumen.

Great job, Hil!

Hmm, I’m not sure. Let’s ask Hillary. She seems to be an expert on translating these sorts of things.
Grayson on October 13, 2009 at 1:09 PM
What???? That can’t possibly be – why the Nobel Peace Prize winner said they were on board because he nixed the missile defense systems, and all the lib pundits got on TV and scoffed that of course he got assurances from Russia, that’s why he backed down.
I think this is all a bunch of conservative worry wart trash talk. The world loves us now. We are all going to share the peace-keeping responsibilities. The UN will be reborn. Just wait, you’ll see… you will, just wait.

You get all the good posts….
This is what Obama got, not only nothing, but an insult…he is truly Putin’s bitch.

All we have heard for years from the “smart ones” is that we need to impose “sanctions” to make rouge regimes comply.
“go through the UN”….”diplomacy”…..”strict sanctions”…..”international coalition”….all nothing but a joke.
Now Russia has b!tch slapped the Obama administration so soundly that even worthless sanctions used to give the “appearance” of taking action are not going to be used.
Basically the Obama administration is just trying to save face over the fact that they know that Russia and China are not going to take any serious actions against Iran,so let’s just take sanctions off the table. Can’t fail at something you don’t try for.
Obama has given up missile defense and turned it’s back on new Europe for nothing.
Apparently “smart power” is now reduced to hoping Iran buys into the “hope and change” drivel that liberals here are on bended knee for.
This will just continue the UN and liberal track record of absolute failure in dealing with dictators and rouge regimes.
Epic fail.

Apparently “reset” translates to “surrender” in Russian.

‘Zactly.
It’s almost as if the only thing Dems are good at is campaigning for election on how good they’d be once in office.

Peace.

Aside from the obvious points everyone here has pointed out -
SALT 1 Treaty expires on Dec. 5th 2009. Russia has already announced, they have 10 new war heads rolling out, in the absence of a continuation of SALT or a new SALT-type agreement.
All while we have backed away from an Eastern Europe missle shield AND have announced to the world we will reduce our nuclear arms; N Korea ramps up their nuclear efforts, known Iranian nuclear efforts ramp up and are testing short range nuclear capable missles.
Have a Merry Christmas!

I’m guessing “no.”
Besides, they know that Fox News is the *real* enemy.
