By the way, in Holland, Sinterklaas (=Santa Claus) has as his companion Zwarte Piet (Black Pete). If you’re bad he doesn’t bring you coal, but puts you in a burlap bag and takes you to Spain for a year. (Doesn’t sound so awful to me!) We would never have such a tradition here, given our history, but it’s interesting that the very liberal and accepting Dutch don’t seem to think this too at odds with their culture. (Actually there was a move a couple years ago to replace him with a variety of red, blue and green Petes, but the public wasn’t having it.)
(I just mention this for interest’s sake, not to imply any sanction of this baker fellow’s stupid action.)
