In Englewood, where the police estimate that up to a fifth of the population of 26,000 are illegal immigrants, the authorities have long asked about immigration status, so “this doesn’t change things at all,” according to Arthur O’Keefe, the deputy police chief.
They’ve long asked about it, and still a fifth of Englewood residents are illegal? No wonder this doesn’t change anything.
Some of the questions raised by cops quoted in the article are valid, admittedly. What are they supposed to do if a suspect declines to answer questions about their immigration status? Is there anything legally compelling them do so, or does it just get marked down as “suspect refused to comply”? At that point it just becomes census data so at the end of the year the city can find out what % of arrested individuals didn’t answer the question – not sure I see the merit there.
The bigger problem of course is that if the Fed won’t do anything about it, what an individual town in NJ does really doesn’t amount to much.

Gee let’s see! How to identify an illegal alien in New Jersey!
Do you have a driver’s license? NO
Do you have a permanent place of residence? NO
Do you have a social security card? NO
Can you explain why your fingerprints came back from the FBI as having missed an immigration hearing? SI
Thank you! You may leave!

It is really astounding that if *I* were pulled over and was unwilling / unable to provide any ID for myself or the vehicle, I’d be in jail.
I know this because I’ve seen people arrested for it on Cops!
(Therefore, it must be true.)
How is it _possible_ for an AI to not be arrested for not providing ID when pulled over?
I never thought I’d live in an America where the local officials were going out of their way to thwart efforts at ensuring the rule of law is obeyed. Time to clean out all these career politicians and restore the concept of government by the people because this “government by the special interests that pay us” isn’t working real well.
Blowback
