I’m talking about Zogby the polling firm which commissioned this poll, not John Zogby the person. The final poll from Zogby the poll showed Bush winning by at least one point. John Zogby the person incorrectly predicted it. John Zogby the person also said that this thing was over a few days ago.
Zogby got the Albanian parliamentary elections right in 1996, right? The Goatherders Party won?
That’s good enough for me.
Let’s go with this one.

I don’t know for sure if he’ll win or not, but I really like this poll. And if McCain does win, I don’t know why anyone should have been surprised he won it in the same way he wins fucking everything.

Wondering,, how will the messiah take losing??
JellyToast on October 31, 2008 at 11:02 PM
If he does lose (and I’m not entirely convinced though I’m encouraged) he’ll be fine. He’ll give a concession speech and head back to the Senate for a run in another four years.
It’s his supporters that I’m concerned about. He doesn’t have himself convinced that he’s a Messiah. He knows that he’s a Chicago politician who lies to win. They (his supporters) don’t view him as such. They view him as a Messiah.
I don’t know if Zogby is right or not, I personally lean more toward IBD’s #’s, BUT regardless, this poll is unhelpful to the Obama ‘inevitability’ dialogue.
I’m glad that the election is finally here. You’ve done great work, AP, thanks for all the linkage and commentary to get us here. I feel completely informed and ready to go.
Heard about the poll on Hannity & Colmes. I was beyond ecstatic. I am optimistic, polls or no polls.
McCain has a way of winning these things when people doubt him.
McCain will appear on SNL before the election, maybe it is a tacit endorsement of the man. Maybe they will get higher ratings than last week, maybe even Palin-like numbers.

The main things I’m afraid of at this point are:
a) early and absentee voting in states where those policies are very lax (see North Carolina)
b) black turnout that actually comes close to meeting the pollsters expectations (I’m not expecting that to happen, but it’s possible especially in a state like NC or VA)
I’m convinced we’ve got PA. If we can hold OH, FL, IN, one of the three Western swing states, and NC (which is totally possible), we’ve got it. Obama will be in Charlotte on Monday to mobilize black turnout (which will, presumably, help Obama along with Hagan and Perdue). I’m really worried about the NC/VA factor. If we can win one (especially NC, with its competitive and high stakes Governor and Senate races) , I’ll be happy. If we can win both, I’ll be ecstatic (almost as good as Murtha and Franken both losing).
I really do wonder that if Obama wins if the losers who are voting for him will have the patience for his “change”. I suspect that after 4 years of an inept Obama and nary a real change in their own lives liberalism will take a major hit. The reality that government cannot truly change broken lives will become evident to millions.

I don’t give a rat’s posterior if he’s exactly what the neotrolls want, or if he displeases Peggy Noonan; in fact, I’m overjoyed at the latter. It’s time for the surrender monkeys to hang it up anyway.
He is a magnificent antidote to Osama Obama’s brand of duplicity and Marxist totalitarianism. And with Sarah Palin on the tem, we have a ticket that will see us through the tests of the next eight years.

d1carter on October 31, 2008 at 11:04 PM
If McCain wins and there is blood, that blood is partly on the hands of irresponsible pollsters like Gallup. We will soon see who is right but I believe Gallup is doing more electioneering than “polling.” Its pollsters like Gallup that have got the Left’s hopes sky-high on bogus data and I think they know it, or at least they should.

When stocks rise tomorrow, someone needs to do a chart on the polls and wallstreet.
I think there is a correlation to when Obama is way ahead, and McCain closing. I have thought this for days as McCain has gone up in the polls this week as stocks have gone up, yet last week, there was massive selling when Obama was up big in some polls.

Not only did he call it for Kerry, but he projected that Kerry would win by (literally) 98 Evs.
As for why he did, who knows. He’s a liberal and made the prediction (I believe) on The Daily Show.
With Zogby’s actual poll data, it’s super hit or super miss. He’s either a spot on or twenty points off. If I remember correctly, didn’t he give California to Mitt back in the primaries? I had false hope. I’m encouraged by this, but I wouldn’t put my eggs anywhere near this basket.
No reason to get ahead of yourself imagining reactions to the results, pro or con. Bad luck to dwell overmuch, especially on defeat, but also on taking it out on the trolls and the traitors. I guess if it motivates you actually to DO something, or use it for propaganda purposes, that’s something else.

In liberal Fairfax County in Northern Virginia, I’m seeing a bizarre lack of Obama bumper stickers and more McCain than Obama. . .and yet polls are stating that Virginia is a “blue state” this year. The polls make no sense.
I think Zogby knows these polls are BS and is trying to maintain credibility. We finally are getting somewhat more accurate poll. He probably will have McCain even farther ahead by Monday. These polls were trying to suppress conservative turnout, but they have got to maintain some accuracy, hence McCain ahead in Zogby now.
Anyway, look how cheerful McCain looks these days and how Obama is fretting by running away from reporters in the picture on Drudge. These internal polls must show McCain WAY ahead.

I am trying to figure out some of the Obama supporters. I realize this may be a lost cause as it appears the support is not based on facts but rather some strange type of faith.
Obama won acclaim as he promised to remove our troops but the reality is we will be in Iraq til at least 2010 and likely longer. While Mr. Anti-war Obama is calling for more ttroops in Afghanistan. There has to be a significant but small percentage of anti-war types that cannot vote for such a man.
Obama is promising tax cuts in a time of war. Did not we learn from our liberal brethren that it was ruinous to reduce taxes when our soldiers are on the battlefield? I think some of his early supporters are wising up.
Additionally, I hope those strong supporters of the Constitution are awake. Obamas supporters do not believe that the Constitution should be the the guide for our Supreme Court justices. Obama’s recent discussion regarding the Constitution prove that he thinks the courts should not support its original intent. Obama is to cowardly to go through the amendment process as laid out.
Anyone see any irony in these points? I am hoping that at least 3-4% of Obama supporters get it.
Jamson64 on October 31, 2008 at 11:54 PM

I, for one, believe that the pioneering spirit is alive and well in America. People are starting to realize that the decision between McCain and BHO comes down, essentially, to reaffirming that spirit at a time when it is really called for, or declaring defeat at the hands of the frontier, cutting and running to the ignorant safety of a competition-free, government-run life. This strikes at the very heart of what it is to be an American and, I believe, many will decide to continue pioneering, as America always has. McCain by 7 in the popular.

This is SOOOOOO out of line with all of zogby’s previous polls. Its a five point jump for McCain in a single day, and a 3 point fall for Obama. There was NO major event over the past 48 hours that can justify this. I hope to hell that this poll is accurate, but i suspect that some funny business has gone on to get these numbers.
muyoso on October 31, 2008 at 11:57 PM
Obama had a 30 minute vomit-o-roma, and just today he told people they were selfish for not wanting to pay more taxes. Further, one of Obama’s spokespersons lowered the tax bar again down to 120k.
Those are pretty major points.

Pretty soon with the momentum in the polls people may jump on board just to be a part of what they think will be the biggest upset in the history of politics. Everyone loves to see a cocky front-runner choke and have the smug look wiped off the pretend champion’s face. Plus is will be a massive middle finger to Hollywood and the rest of the world who thinks they can determine our President with endorsements and illegal campaign cash.
A McCain win, a win completely unexpected by enemies of America who have been holding their act together with spit and baling wire in hopes of Obamajebus bailing them out. Follow that by a complete collapse.
I’m talking Raul Castro screwing up and admitting his brother is dead and on ice. I’m talking popular uprising against Chavez. I’m talking serious internal problems for Putin and Ahmadinejad, too.
John McCain will be our next President of the United States.
Sarah Palin will be the next President of the United States, after John.
No conspiracies. The American People will have spoken.

I don’t trust Zogby. His polls have always leaned left. I trust Rasmussen the most.
I heard some analyst the other day saying that the Obama team was dreading the stray poll that shows McCain +1–because of the inevitability thing.

I have a few hundred dollars worth of bets with various malcontents who have more money than I do.
I know McCain will win, that has never been an issue for me. I know that there are still not enough Americans who hate their country so much that they would gladly stand by and watch it destroyed by a punk with no experience.
My joy won’t come from collecting on my bets. My joy will come from watching my wonderful country survive another attack from the democratic whores who hate our country first and will do anything to drag her down and rebuild her in their warped image.
Obama says that our founding fathers ideals are fundamentally flawed.

For a great thorough analysis of the polls you all need to check out the Hedgehog Report. They reweight polls to historical norms to get a more accurate picture of whats happening out there. Consider that since Obama got the nomination polls have been weighting Dems at a much higher percentage than ever before. Some as much as 16% higher dems than pubs.
Yeah, but,,McCain had a friend who had a relative that bought a taco from s suspected illegal!! That’s the real story , buddy!
Everything else is just a distraction!!
There is something to be said for the idea that many may not tell a pollster that they are not voting for Obama.

Chuck Schick on October 31, 2008 at 11:09 PM
If we can win both, I’ll be ecstatic (almost as good as Murtha and Franken both losing).
malan89 on October 31, 2008 at 11:09 PM
I really do wonder that if Obama wins if the losers who are voting for him will have the patience for his “change”. I suspect that after 4 years of an inept Obama and nary a real change in their own lives liberalism will take a major hit. The reality that government cannot truly change broken lives will become evident to millions.

You go, girl!
The McCain-bashing around here has gotten beyond monotonous. When we have a candidate who is honorable, decent and patriotic, we should celebrate it!

MrScribbler on October 31, 2008 at 11:11 PM
If McCain wins and there is blood, that blood is partly on the hands of irresponsible pollsters like Gallup. Obama has been showing concern, still spending money in califorina which should be a lock and spending time in Iowa today which was considered a lock.
But ya know, no socialist like Obama and Co. should get more than 20% of the popular vote. The fact that they do shows how little attention too many people pay and how deeply the msm cuts into Americans knowledge of the canidates.

Does anyone else remember the Alfred Smith dinner recently when McCain was doing his monologue? Mac was setting up his joke about Hillary supporting him and he said something like: “And I know that there are people here tonight who are pulling for me.” When he said that line, there was, surprisingly, lots of applause. I knew then that we were not in as bad as shape as the MSM/polls were leading us to believe. He was just setting up the joke but people there were applauding him as president.

Marcus on October 31, 2008 at 11:51 PM
Luntz exposed his bias tonight. He told Bill O that they are already set up to do focus groups on Obama’s first 100 days. No mention of following McCain’s first 100 days.
csdeven on October 31, 2008 at 11:54 PM
This is the same Zogby who had Obama up by 7 yesterday, wasn’t it?
I’m not getting excited over any polling this year except for the one at the very end. The one that counts.
Tennman on October 31, 2008 at 11:54 PM
Screw the polls, polls are bull$hit. McCain’s going to win by a larger margin than that.
People will claim they voted for Bambi, even after the election, but McCain is going to walk away as the victor in the vote tally.

aquaviva on October 31, 2008 at 11:56 PM
This is SOOOOOO out of line with all of zogby’s previous polls. Its a five point jump for McCain in a single day, and a 3 point fall for Obama. There was NO major event over the past 48 hours that can justify this. I hope to hell that this poll is accurate, but i suspect that some funny business has gone on to get these numbers.

Ever thought that the funny business was occurring with the other polls and now pollsters are trying to get some credibility back right before the election?
Also, it doesn’t help that Obama pretty much called Americans selfish today (now yesterday for those of us in the east). Also, it’s Saturday, so it’ll be buried and probably won’t be noticed, but then Zogby will be able to say “Look at my poll for the Friday before the election.”

nazo311 on November 1, 2008 at 12:04 AM
More likely: There was funny business the past month to get the 7 and 8 points ahead for Obama.
Zogby now is scared that McCain has been actually ahead since the Convention and knows these bogus polls were designed to create a bandwagon effect for the commi by polling far more Democrats than Republicans in samples. Obviously, it didn’t work and he needs to maintain credibility. THAT is what has changed.

This rated just a headline?
I, for one, believe that the pioneering spirit is alive and well in America. People are starting to realize that the decision between McCain and BHO comes down, essentially, to reaffirming that spirit at a time when it is really called for, or declaring defeat at the hands of the frontier, cutting and running to the ignorant safety of a competition-free, government-run life. This strikes at the very heart of what it is to be an American and, I believe, many will decide to continue pioneering, as America always has. McCain by 7 in the popular.

ManlyRash on November 1, 2008 at 12:10 AM
Um…the popular vote does not elect the POTUS. The Electoral College does. I’m optimistic, but a national poll with these numbers doesn’t mean much to me.
I think it could backfire, as it may cause more Dem turnout, or more vote counting shenanigans (which are a disservice to everyone).
I was content to just enjoy the surprise on Tuesday.

This is not news, it was predetermined.
Polls do not change unless the pollsters want them to change. The pollsters have been engaged in trying to move the electorate toward Obama for months and now they have to reflect the REAL mood of the country lest they appear completely incompetent when the election is over.

Everyone loves to see a cocky front-runner choke and have the smug look wiped off the pretend champion’s face.
I say that Obama’s ideals are fundamentally unamerican and his tactics are criminal.
