Charles Blow
It turns out that the Republican enthusiasm for Sarah Palin is just as superficial as she is. They were so eager for someone to cheer for (because they really don’t like you) that they dove face first into the Palin mirage. But, on the issues, even they worry about her.

Palin’s power is so great, John McCain’s economic advisors will evidently stop advising him on economics.
Keljeck on September 20, 2008 at 2:07 PM
With a name like his, he’d better back off trying to give other people funny nicknames.

It’s the ’80s all over, again.
I can live with that.
Editor on September 20, 2008 at 2:10 PM
And still, they and we love her and will vote for her.
Kinda pisses you off, huh, Mr. Blow?
BTW – there is a difference between a financial crisis and and economic crisis. While one can lead to the other, they are not the same thing. But, perhaps that is too nuanced for some to comprehend.
I believe Barney Frank said the very same thing on one of the talk shows: that although there is a financial crisis, the fundamentals of the economy are strong.
Queen0fCups on September 20, 2008 at 2:11 PM
If I responded to Charles Blowhard in the same spirit and terms he uses to further the NYT’s elect-Obama agenda, I’d be called a racist and worse.
I guess being a lefty trumps all need for decency and civility.
If that way of thinking continues, Blow may well soon hear himself being called names he thought had been consigned to the dustbin of an evil past.
And if that happens, he brought it on himself.

It’s fun to watch these hateful libs freak out. Keep the articles comin’!
Tony737 on September 20, 2008 at 2:16 PM
What’s ironic is that he writes a fairly principled piece, and then craps all over it with his remark about “snowjob squareglasses”.
It’s like Palin gives them all a case of Tourette’s or something. Might be one of the more noticeable external symptoms of PDS.
Purple Fury on September 20, 2008 at 2:17 PM
That’s a new one!

Time for a very special Special Comment.

80’s economy was better than the 70’s…
If McCain is Going to play the Role of Reagan and Obama is Going play the Role of Carter…
I’ll take Reagan..

Is this the guy that took Jayson Blair’s job? Mr. Blow is a liar, the plane did sell on eBay and Palin did not “flip-flop” on the bridge.
Maxx on September 20, 2008 at 2:24 PM
Boy, I wouldn’t make fun of other people’s names if mine were Mr. Blow.
I’ve never heard of him. I guess he is one of these columnists only east coast effete snobs of both the conservative and moonbat persuasion read and link to. So, I’m not surprised to see it linked here.
Has anyone done a ratio of bashing to nonbashing Palin articles linked to on HotAir? I understand the necessity of being aware of the slime the other side is throwing, but I don’t see how the redundancy is necessary. That, the misleading ledes, the condescending “Obligatory” posts have long gotten old.

Yeah, the inevitable blow, ah, you-know-what jokes abound.
Meryl Yourish on September 20, 2008 at 2:29 PM
Hence the root cause of the PDS.
CanadianGuy on September 20, 2008 at 2:34 PM
Actually she put it on ebay but couldn’t sell it there. But still she sold it and there’s nothing Palin said that was a lie.

CanadianGuy on September 20, 2008 at 2:36 PM
I’ve seen this ridiculous line before. So, Barry just picked Biden because no one else wanted the job and Biden had nothing else to do?

“the plane did sell on eBay”
fact check alert — the plane did not sell on ebay; a broker wound up selling it later. double fact check alert — saracuda never said it sold on ebay, only that she listed it — which again is precisely what occured.
/i’ll grant you he’s lying about the bridge to nowhere; but then again that he’s a lll hack who lies wasn’t really in question …

I read somewhere that the plane did not sell on the first attempt on eBay, but was re-listed and then sold. You are saying it sold by other means, fine. Blow is still a liar because he implied the plane was not sold.
Maxx on September 20, 2008 at 2:46 PM
Wow. An op-ed columnist writes smugly about someone he doesn’t like and pretends she is a dangerous and ridiculous pick for Vice President. Did not see that coming.
Should we go ahead and list accomplishments side by side with the person I’m going to assume he’s supporting for President?
Rogue Traveler on September 20, 2008 at 2:48 PM
“Should we go ahead and list accomplishments side by side with the person I’m going to assume he’s supporting for President?”

SpongeBob analogies always add gravitas to one’s argument, I find. I prefer Grandmaster Flash myself when the talk turns to blow, snow and the 80s.
Seriously, though, this mythical Sarah Palin must be one of those two-sided holograms from Disney’s Haunted Mansion. From one angle, she looks like a normal, attractive woman. From the other, Medusa.
Terrie on September 20, 2008 at 2:51 PM
This is what I wrote to Curtis Blow:
SouthernGent on September 20, 2008 at 2:55 PM
oh yeah….that guy is really going to change my mind.
wildweasel on September 20, 2008 at 3:06 PM
Yeah. I sure do remember Mitt.
Strange thing is he’s the guy who seems to be respected by both sides as understanding macroeconomics. Ain’t one single soul on the Democrat side anyone believes that about.
So I think McCain should start naming his team now and with Mitt as maybe Secretary of Commerce or Treasury.
There’s no reason Mitt has to be VP to be in the administration.
Typhoon on September 20, 2008 at 3:09 PM
Mr. Blow is indeed a leftist hack, here is a fun article that compares Mr. Blow’s style with that of Krauthammer. Guess what, Blow is a Global Warming Alarmist just as you would suspect. Krauthammer uses facts, Blow uses, Er, shall we say hyperventilation.
Maxx on September 20, 2008 at 3:21 PM
Actually – to swallow Blow’s line of reasoning for a wacky moment – we might agree that McCain didn’t need Palin to govern, that she was just a pick to draw votes.
That in no way negates Obama’s recognition that he couldn’t govern on his own and needed Biden to meet the “experience test” – an aloof slap in the face to voters who twice rejected Biden during Presidential primaries.
I guess Obama’s governing incompetence can be overlooked (even when his solution reveals his disdain for the voters), but McCain’s campaigning calculus is simply unconscionable. Incredible.
But go one step further. If this debate is to be centered on the Republican VP pick, then set aside both Obama and McCain for a moment. If the President lives but one day in office, who would you rather have in the White House on Day Two? A man twice rejected for that very job by his own party, or a Governor known for the executive results she obtains and her utter disdain for corruption (of all stripes) in government?
Sarah’s already winning that hypothetical vote hands down in the polls.

Dingbat63 on September 20, 2008 at 3:53 PM
Buddy, I’m old enough to know and Palin makes the “they hated Reagan too” First Team. The PDS barf is much like the venom spit at Reagan… it’s not only a good sign, it’s Grand Confirmation.
T J Green on September 20, 2008 at 4:07 PM
Thank you, Ms. Cups. I was on my way to point that out, and see that you’ve done it nicely.
This afternoon, FNC played the opening of Barry-O’s speech. He calls it an ‘economic’ meltdown too.
As you point out, what we have is a meltdown of the credit system, or even a meltdown of the financial system, if you prefer. But while a financial meltdown can lead to an economic meltdown, they are distinctly different things.
But then, we should give him a pass on such highly nuanced distinctions — financial versus economic meltdown. After all, he was a ‘community organizer’.
petefrt on September 20, 2008 at 4:07 PM
Blow’s writing is distinctively sophomoric. Maybe his mentor is Maureen Dowd.

I was going to vote for McCain/Palin, but:
1. Roger Ebert doesn’t like her glasses
2. Sandra Bernhard doesn’t like her glasses
3. Charles Blow doesn’t like her glasses
They’ve really given me a lot to think about before I cast my vote.
