Too Weird to Check: MN Dem State Senator Arrested for ... Burglary?

Democratic Minnesota Sen. Nicole Mitchell was arrested Monday morning in Detroit Lakes, Minn., for alleged burglary. The jail roster with the Becker County Sheriff’s Office indicates that Mitchell has been arrested for a first-degree burglary offense.

According to an official with the Detroit Lakes Police Department, a homeowner in the city called 911 at 4:45 a.m. Monday morning after discovering a person in their residence. Responding officers found the alleged burglar, made an arrest, and transported that person to the Becker County Sheriff’s Office.

Charges have yet to be filed, according to KVRR, but Mitchell's being held under that provisional complaint. No news agency has any other details. One has to wonder whether this was a situation where someone was so intoxicated that they broke into a house thinking it was theirs or just simply wanted to crash there, which would still qualify as burglary. However, first-degree burglary in MN requires other elements such as a weapon and/or an assault on someone within the property. And it can land Mitchell a 20-year prison sentence, if she's charged and convicted.
