WASHINGTON — The Newseum, in partnership with Paramount Pictures, will open “Anchorman: The Exhibit,” featuring props, costumes and footage from the 2004 hit comedy “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.”

The exhibit will open on Nov. 14, 2013, prior to the release of the highly anticipated sequel “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.” It will be on display through Aug. 31, 2014.

“I’m literally trapped in a glass case of emotion,” said Burgundy, commenting on his inclusion in the museum’s exhibit. …

-Costumes worn by the Channel 4 Evening News team

-A re-creation of the KVWN-TV anchor desk and news set

-A number of original props from the movie, including Burgundy’s jazz flute and the whip used by rival anchorman Arturo Mendez during the film’s memorable fight scene between rival news teams

Anthony Weiner’s campaign for New York City mayor got off to an energetic, but bumpy, start this week after his campaign website briefly featured an image of the wrong city’s skyline — instead of showing the Big Apple, the website featured a shot of beautiful Pittsburgh.

A technology firm is taking the blame for the photo mix-up. NGP VAN, which does consulting work for Democratic campaigns, said in a statement that a designer simply used the wrong image.

“This is our fault,” the company said. “NGP VAN acknowledges that the image of the wrong skyline on the placeholder page for the Weiner campaign was our honest mistake, and not that of the Weiner campaign.”

Carter Stewart has been full of surprises over the years. …

Then last weekend, Frac Daddy, a 3-year-old thoroughbred he co-owns with Senior graduate Ken Schlenker, came out of nowhere to qualify for the fabled Kentucky Derby. …

That’s exactly what they did recently in making a last-minute decision to enter the Kentucky-bred Frac Daddy in the $1 million Arkansas Derby with hopes of winding up at Churchill Downs.

The gray colt finished second to Overanalyze in front of a crowd of 66,158 in the Grade 1 stakes race at Oaklawn Park, earning enough points to secure a spot in the final field for the “Run for the Roses” May 4 in Louisville, Ky. …

“Ken and I kind of consider this horse, named Frac Daddy with all the fracking going on, as a tribute to the oilfield workers of America,” Stewart said.

The delegates were reportedly ordered to leave an event in Saudi Arabia and then thrown out of the country because authorities thought their looks may corrupt young women.

Arabic newspaper Elaph said: ‘A festival official said the three Emiratis were taken out on the grounds they are too handsome and that the commission [for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vices] members feared female visitors could fall for them.’

But the men have denied their dashing looks were to blame for them being deported and instead said authorities were concerned by a female artist they were travelling with.

The authoritarian Venezuelan regime certainly isn’t the only one convinced that United States is engaged in a covert bio-campaign designed to undermine communist governments, but this one might be even more creatively paranoid.

Colonel Dai Xu of the People’s Liberation Army wrote online that the new strain of bird flu hitting China, known as H7N9, is an American “bio-psychological weapon” meant to destabilize China. The rant, posted to Dai’s account on the Twitter-like service Weibo, had already been shared by more than 30,000 fellow users by the time that the South China Morning Post reported it on Monday. Dai now has a quarter million followers on Weibo, which is quite a platform.

In general, Chinese Web users appear to have rejected Dai’s argument. In response to the criticism, though, he’s only dug in. “It is common knowledge that a group of people in China have been injected with mental toxin by the U.S.,” he wrote at one point. “I will not retreat even half a step.” He urged Chinese officials to ignore the virus’s apparent spread and argued that the disastrous 2003 SARS outbreak was also an American plot.

This is definitely one that I’ll be watching — last fall, the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati struck down Michigan’s 2006 state constitutional amendment banning public colleges from considering race as a factor in their admissions processing, and the Supreme Court is going to take up the case.

The Supreme Court agreed on Monday to consider a Michigan law that bans affirmative action in public college admissions. …

The Michigan law bans preferential treatment toward any candidates in public university admissions.

The high court is simultaneously considering a case on whether colleges and universities can continue to give special preference to minority candidates in admissions policies, in a case involving the University of Texas. A ruling in that case, Fisher v. University of Texas, is expected imminently and will come no later than the end of June.

That the court agreed to hear the Michigan case before deciding the Texas case is unusual. The court’s normal practice is to wait until it has issued a ruling before agreeing to hear another case on a related issue. This may mean that the court is struggling to decide the Texas case, or that the ruling could be coming as soon as this week.

Kaiser’s health tracking poll found that 37 percent of Democrats said “the cost of health care for the nation as a whole” would be better as a result of the law, just 39 percent said health care quality would be better and 27 percent said consumer protections for private insurance would be better. However, 53 percent of Democrats said the law would improve access to health care for the uninsured.

On Monday, a state judge in Manhattan struck down New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s rule capping soda sizes. And lawmakers in Mississippi are taking the backlash against government regulation on food marketing one step further.

A bill now on the governor’s desk would bar counties and towns from enacting rules that require calorie counts to be posted, that cap portion sizes, or that keep toys out of kids’ meals. “The Anti-Bloomberg Bill” garnered wide bipartisan support in both chambers of the legislature in a state where one in three adults is obese, the highest rate in the nation.

The bill is expected to be signed by Gov. Phil Bryant, a Republican. ..

“If you look at how menus have changed, whether it be in fast food or family dining, you are seeing more and more healthy options,” Cashion says. “Not because of legislative mandates or regulatory mandates, but because of consumer demand. Our industry has always been one to respond to the marketplace.”

Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was convicted Monday of corruption charges, ensuring a return to prison for a man once among the nation’s youngest big-city leaders.

Jurors convicted Kilpatrick of a raft of crimes, including a racketeering conspiracy charge. He was portrayed during a five-month trial as an unscrupulous politician who took bribes, rigged contracts and lived far beyond his means while in office until fall 2008. …

Internal Revenue Service agents said Kilpatrick spent $840,000 beyond his mayoral salary. …

Kilpatrick, 42, was elected in 2001 at age 31. He resigned in 2008 and pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice in a different scandal involving sexually explicit text messages and an extramarital affair with his chief of staff.

Yes, why don’t we use up even more of the state’s resources to force law-abiding citizens wishing to purchase ammunition to take preemptive anger-management courses? The brilliance is overwhelming me.

A Florida legislator wants anyone trying to buy ammunition to complete an anger management program first, in what critics say is the latest example of local lawmakers reaching for constitutionally-dubious solutions to the problem of gun violence.

The bill filed Saturday by state Sen. Audrey Gibson, D-Jacksonville, would require a three-day waiting period for the sale of any firearm and the sale of ammunition to anyone who has not completed anger management courses. The proposal would require ammo buyers to take the anger management courses every 10 years.

“This is not about guns,” Gibson said. “This is about ammunition and not only for the safety of the general community, but also for the safety of law enforcement.”

Ten months into his mandate, President Francois Hollande scored the worst of any French president since 1981 in the TNS Sofres poll for Le Figaro magazine released on Thursday as he struggles to spur economic growth and create jobs.

Socialist voters who propelled Hollande to the presidency in May 2012 are now questioning his government’s handling of an economy teetering near recession, a series of industrial layoffs and joblessness at a 15-year high.

Hollande’s rating fell by 5 points in February in the monthly poll to 30 percent when respondents were asked whether they had confidence in their president to resolve the country’s problems, pulled down by a 8 point drop from Socialist voters.

Dear Friends,

Since we announced our decision last week to reduce the alcohol content (ABV) of Maker’s Mark in response to supply constraints, we have heard many concerns and questions from our ambassadors and brand fans. We’re humbled by your overwhelming response and passion for Maker’s Mark. While we thought we were doing what’s right, this is your brand – and you told us in large numbers to change our decision.

You spoke. We listened. And we’re sincerely sorry we let you down.

So effective immediately, we are reversing our decision to lower the ABV of Maker’s Mark, and resuming production at 45% alcohol by volume (90 proof). Just like we’ve made it since the very beginning.

The unanticipated dramatic growth rate of Maker’s Mark is a good problem to have, and we appreciate some of you telling us you’d even put up with occasional shortages. We promise we’ll deal with them as best we can, as we work to expand capacity at the distillery.

Huh. The Hopenchange generation is also the most stressed out, most especially about work and money. I wonder if there could be some kind of correlation there.

Those ages 18-33 — the Millennial generation — are plenty stressed, and it’s not letting up: 39% say their stress has increased in the past year; 52% say stress has kept them awake at night in the past month. And more than any other age group, they report being told by a health care provider that they have either depression or an anxiety disorder.

The online survey of 2,020 U.S. adults 18 and older, conducted in August by Harris Interactive for the American Psychological Association, has been taking the stress pulse of Americans since 2007.

On a 10-point scale, where 1 means “little or no stress” and 10 means “a great deal of stress,” the 2012 average is 4.9.

But for Millennials, it’s 5.4.

The shoe comes down twice in Ahmadinejad’s direction, but too far from the Iranian leader to pose a threat.

Several men then turn on the shoe-brandishing attacker and Ahmadinejad is quickly hustled to a waiting car. Anadolu reported the man was Syrian and accused the Iranian president of “killing his brothers.” Iran has supported Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in that country’s ongoing, bloody civil war.

Ed, turns out the New York Times isn’t the only one China’s been targeting recently for media espionage; the Wall Street Journal is reporting that they too have recently been the victims of similar attempts “for the apparent purpose of monitoring the newspaper’s China coverage”:

The infiltration at the Journal, along with reports of computer network breaches at the New York Times and other news outlets, indicate that Chinese spying on U.S. media has become a widespread phenomenon.

Chinese hackers for years have targeted major U.S. media companies with hacking, repeatedly penetrating deep inside some newsgathering systems, according to several people familiar with the response to the cyberattacks. …

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation has been probing these media incidents for more than a year and considers the hacking a national-security case against U.S. interests, people familiar with the matter said. …

She said the Journal on Thursday completed a network overhaul to bolster security. “We fully intend to continue the aggressive and independent journalism for which we are known,” she said.

The communist regime in China does not take at all kindly to much dissent nor criticism of their special brand of plutocratic authoritarianism; but instead of limiting themselves merely to chucking free-speech advocates into extralegal detention, running a robust state media operation, and keeping tight censorship controls on their citizens’ Internet access, they’re looking to get a little more proactive. As the Chinese government weighs whether or not to allow its citizens less fettered access to the fresh ideas and competitive advantages of the outside world (or perhaps they merely want to further fine-tune their jingoistic propaganda campaigns against the “evils” of capitalism), they’re apparently monitoring how they are portrayed with big-name media outlets. Image control, you know.

Effective language is vital to ensure that “the Affordable Care Act [is] real to people in this country,” Gunn added.

“We know that 12 million of the people eligible [for the law] speak Spanish, and one million more speak a language other than English or Spanish. These are the people we need to reach,” he said.

This has only happened with the president at Camp David, at most, a couple of times, according to a source who says he has been to the retreat on a half-dozen visits with Obama.

“The only time he shot skeet was for President’s Cup,” said the source, referring to a shooting competition tradition involving the presidential Marine guards. “I was there. He stayed for about five minutes, and couldn’t leave fast enough.” …

Submit your application today! …Because nobody else wants to, via WaPo:

All of which would make him a natural fit for the Independent Payment Advisory Board, the new, 15-member panel that has the authority to reduce Medicare doctors’ reimbursements and pilot new ways to deliver high quality care for less. There’s just one tiny problem: Gruber has absolutely no interest in serving on the panel. “No way,” he says without pause. “Maybe if it was a part-time gig. But full time? I can’t see it.”

It’s not just Gruber. Obama’s former health policy advisers worry that other top health economists, those in hot demand in academia and in the industry, won’t be interested in a federal job where the compensation is low, the political controversy high and the ultimate payoff unclear.

“It is supposed to be 15 members, with limited salaries who can’t do any outside work,” says Peter Orszag, the former director of the Office of Budget and Management under Obama who was a key proponent of IPAB. “It will be challenging to find top 15 health-care experts are who would want that job.”

Well, check that out: Yet another obstacle in centrally orchestrating the many diverse situations and nuanced decisions inherent in the massive health care industry. Who could’ve seen this coming?

There are plenty of things that really get my goat when it comes to the French (that whole “Socialism”-with-a-capital-S thing figuring pretty largely among them), but I must say — when it comes to their proud and robust we-do-what-we-want insistence on French being the one official language… I kind of have total respect for them. Via the AP:

The French government is redefining hashtag with a Gallic touch. The country that has an academy devoted solely to the use of the French language has given its official seal of approval to a new word for the Twittersphere: mot-diese.

Pronounced ‘Mo-Dee-YEZ’, it doesn’t exactly trip off the tongue. But that’s not the point. French law requires that government agencies use French terms — and teachers are required to spread the word. New words are approved by the Academie Francaise and written into the lawbooks.

Scott Brown still hasn’t announced whether he’d prefer to run in the special election for Massachusett’s other Senate seat or put in a bid for the gubernatorial race, but if he does decide to take the Senate option, looks like he has a pretty solid foundation on which to build. Brown has a big lead over Rep. Ed Markey in a poll released Friday from MassInc Polling Group, reports The Hill:

Brown takes 53 percent support in the poll, over Markey at 31 percent. A match-up of Brown against a generic Democratic ballot is considerably closer, but Brown still leads, 44 to 36 percent.

A strong majority of Democrats, 71 percent, would like to see a primary battle to determine their candidate, and they might get just that. Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) is planning a challenge for the Democratic nomination, the Boston Globe reported Friday.

Yet another resounding example of the inbred inefficiencies of big government at work. Whatever though, what’s a hundred mil here and there, really?

Illegal immigrants and prison inmates received more than $120 million in Medicare services from 2009-2011 despite federal law that makes them ineligible for the program, according to two new reports from the HHS inspector general.

The issue, according to the reports, is timing. When Medicare is alerted that someone is incarcerated or undocumented, its contractors help prevent payments from going out the door. But often, Medicare’s databases aren’t up to date, and improper payments go out. …

Nearly 3,000 illegal immigrants made thousands of claims resulting in $91.6 million in services improperly covered by Medicare during the three-year period studied in the report.

Yet another instance of the Obama administration deliberately misapplying friendly-sounding free-market phraseology for their wily re-branding efforts. Is it really intellectually honest to call something a “marketplace” when people are going to flock to it because of fiat?

The Obama administration is re-branding the central component of its signature healthcare law.

The Health and Human Services Department suddenly stopped referring to insurance “exchanges” this week, even as it heralded ongoing efforts to prod states into setting up their own. Instead, press materials and a website for the public referred to insurance “marketplaces” in each state. …

“It’s not that exchanges are unpopular, but there also isn’t broad awareness about what they are and what they will do for the people who will benefit from them across the country, so it makes sense to use a more descriptive name,” a Democratic source said. “The fact is, both Democratic and Republican Governors across the country are building this infrastructure and open enrollment is only eight months away so it’s time to start raising awareness. Once people get used to having these marketplaces to increase competition and deliver tax credits, there’s no question they will be popular.”

Finally breaking his famously characteristic oral-argument silence of seven years, Justice Clarence Thomas actually spoke up and cracked a joke ...

Finally breaking his famously characteristic oral-argument silence of seven years, Justice Clarence Thomas actually spoke up and cracked a joke during Supreme Court proceedings on Monday. Unfortunately, exactly what he said isn’t clear, but everybody laughed.

Thomas seemed to be making a light-hearted joke about lawyers trained at his alma mater Yale Law School or its rival, Harvard. But several justices were speaking and laughing at the time, and the court reporter lost Thomas’s comments during the cross talk.

His comments came during questions about the qualifications of lawyers who had represented a Louisiana man in a murder case. Justice Antonin Scalia noted that one of the lawyers had attended Harvard and another had gone to Yale. …

No matter what Thomas said, his streak of not asking a question at oral arguments continues. He last queried a lawyer Feb. 22, 2006.

Since it looks like Chris Christie has the New Jersey situation pretty much locked up, at least for now, the race for governorship of purpley Virginia is probably going to be the most exciting polling and election news we have on the docket for 2013. At this very preliminary moment, survey says we’re in for a tight race:

Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Ken Cuccinelli are running neck and neck early in the 2013 race for governor of Virginia, according to a poll today by Quinnipiac University.

McAuliffe, the McLean-based, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee turned green energy entrepreneur, draws 40 percent of voters surveyed to 39 percent for Cuccinelli, the firebrand conservative former state senator who was elected attorney general in 2009. Nearly one in five vogters are undecided. …

The survey was conducted Jan. 4-7 of 1,134 registered voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points. The survey consisted of live interviewers calling voters on land lines and cell phones.
