Russian hockey team out of the Olympics without a medal

posted at 11:39 am on February 19, 2014 by

This was the one Putin really wanted for Russia’s prestige. But then, the Finns have always been good at handling Russians.

The photo below is circulating on Twitter as I write this. It’s actually not from today — it’s from Sunday’s game, which Russia won — but it sums up the mood. Exit question: Didn’t we just barely beat this underperforming team last week?

I oil my AR-15 with Russian sports fan tears.

They probably peaked during their game against us. There was no guarantee they would face us in the gold medal game, especially since they would have to beat Canada to get there, so they put everything they had into the prelim game against us. And the lose deflated them, especially since many of them probably believed they were robbed by the refs.

Does this Russian hockey players will be the newest arrivals at Siberian gulags?

*Does this mean

PS, One of the liberals should photoshop obama jeering behind Putin and Medvedev while they’re looking sad about something. As long as obama is in power, this might be their only chance.

PPS, I know you liberals who post here suck at everything so if you need help photoshopping something, ask Bmore.

Ship them off to the eastern front.

Um… hold on there…

…only those…that live in Russia!…the ones that play in the USA…will probably eventually have to pay…to keep their extended families… safe !

And here I thought whining about referees was a Canadian thing.

Well, there is one bright spot in this dismal day.

Looks more like a Bill Belichick face.

Moesart on February 19, 2014 at 1:07 PM

Can I just say that I find the ‘manning face’ thing incredibly dumb. I’m pretty sure everyone has a look of frustration and/or disappointment.

Looks more like a Mets fan face…

…alright, this Mets fan face.

I was kind of hoping for a rematch of 1980. Too bad.

Heh – Nice Winter War reference :-)

Russia is out? Russia is OUT? RUSSIA.. IS.. OUT?!

Don’t gloat. We’re bringing home more puppies than medals.

In Russia, frustration vents you!

Canada – Latvia 1-1 now third period. 10 min. left.

the_nile on February 19, 2014 at 1:59 PM

While Russia brought a high powered offense they didn’t pack the blue line with fleet of foot or puck moving defenders. I never expected them to get very far and it showed in how they played Slovenian and Slovakia. While they were up for the US team the Russians have shown that when they lack interest they don’t fair very well.

Maybe the Russians have become NHLized…Olympic ice may no longer be their friend. It’ll be interesting to see how USA does the rest of the way, as they specifically selected players for the Olympic ice and rules.

portlandon on February 19, 2014 at 2:25 PM

It is not that we barely beat this team… it is that this team deflated after losing to us. Canada v USA Friday decides this tourney.

Comrades! You lose Olympics – you get sent to front lines in Kiev….Da!!!

redguy on February 19, 2014 at 4:16 PM

Until the USA uses amateurs again it would never be like 1980. But yeah, I agree with the assessments of the Russian team. You’d think they would have done a better job at selecting their team for a home ice Olympics.

The Russian government corner rules that the death is due to natural causes ………… natural causes exclusive to Russia.

Or as we Sailors used to say in Basic Russian language school, “Dog spit on ya!”

NavyMustang on February 19, 2014 at 5:37 PM

I didn’t expect the Russian team to go far. Semin, Kovalchuk, Ovechkin, and even Malkin suffer from inconsistent defensive effort and a lack of willingness to work a proper cycle on offense. If I were Latvia, I’d be worried about Russia invading again just to get some hockey players who can play a disciplined team system.

forest on February 19, 2014 at 7:02 PM

As a Canadian, I am looking forward to beating America again for the gold. Too bad we couldn’t also beat Russia again while we were at it.

I love America – except when you compete against us in hockey. Then I’m all against you Yankees down south.

I know this is surprising to people who only watch hockey every 4 years. But for the rest of us, it was predictable. Herb Brooks is proven right again: it’s not about the best players, it’s about the right ones.

Hat Trick on February 20, 2014 at 11:55 AM

I heard that even though the Finns scored more points, the judges awarded the game to the Russkies.
