Facebook adding 50 new gender options or something

This reminds me of Apple serially rolling out new iPhones whose screens are three percent sharper or whatever. Once you’ve reached this point, you’re out of ideas.

I don’t think it’s water they’re splashing….

I was hoping it was nothing more than Jean Naté™.

example: it’s interesting to see a social justice person explain the difference between “bisexual” and “pansexual.” i’ve never seen a detailed explanation given, only vague explanations!

i’m not sure. i think you just created a new sexual identity label, congratulations! you are now underprivileged and get to claim victim status.

But, do I have to die in the process – like the drunken crop duster pilot in Independence Day who had been probed by the aliens?

There are no details to give, or definitions, because its all made up gobbley-gook. You can be whatever identify you wanna be and everyone has to respect that otherwise you are a bigot. And the government and human rights commissions will be breathing down your neck to enforce your compliance to the new normal.

When I saw this I went on Facebook and tried to change my gender to tri-spirit humming sssssssssrth-X, but Facebook did not allow it. You have to chose from one of those 50 made up classifications, almost none of which mean anything to me. I think its discriminatory that Facebook won’t allow me to choose my identity, instead I am forced to choose from their narrow list of 50 options.

lol

How incredibly intolerant of them!!!
I just can’t live with them forcing me to conform to one of their 50 narrow little boxes…..

From the comments at the article:

Biology is not binary. Regardless of that, biological sex does not determine one’s gender. Gender is a social construct

crowhop on February 13, 2014 at 2:06 PM

Biology is not fact, biology doesn’t determine your species I AM A DRAGON!

If you do not call me a dragon you’re bigoted and sexist… well not sexist, dragon isn’t a “sex”…. speciesist?

Wow, that’s a long word, and as a dragon is normally a fantastical creature, I’m not sure it counts as a species either.

By denying my changing of REALITY, clearly you’re a REALIST! There we go, that definition fits perfectly.

You hear that? If you don’t call me A DRAGON as I clearly demand and claim you’re a REALIST darnit… and I’ll tell the world you’re a damn dirty REALIST!

Oh.. you’re still not calling me a dragon? Lot of realists here today I guess. Maybe most conservatives are realists.

Can we combine this with a race/ethnicity identifier?

I want to be the reincarnation of a former leader of the Ottawa Indian (some members of my family have high cheekbones, so it’s not racist for me to say “Indian”) tribe, so I can self-identify as:

Pontiac Trans Am

It’s the next battle in the “War on Truth”. They’ve basically won the battle in getting people to believe that up is down. Now comes the battle that there are no directions at all.

Marcola on February 13, 2014 at 6:33 PM

“Trans Man” and “Trans * Man” (as if there’s any difference between the two) are options. But I think that you can type in your own custom selection if you feel like you are being marginalized.

A very forward-thinking church I went to several years back had a formerly “transgendered” man come in and talk to us about his struggles with gender identity. It was truly eye opening. He described how he grew up–with a single mom with a drinking problem who had one man after another after another she brought into their home (some of the men were abusive toward him, I think–can’t remember all the details). Basically, his mom was one wreck of a human being who endangered him with her lifestyle and opened him up to experiences that warped his view of sexuality from a very young age.

At some point, the guy decided he should have been born a woman, and when he was an adult, he started pursuing surgical options to transform himself. Before he actually finished the process (I don’t remember how far along he got with it), he had some kind of encounter with a Christian or a church and ended up becoming a Christian himself (which is why he was talking to us). But the main point of what he was trying to share with us was that his gender confusion was rooted in extreme self-hatred–that that is the case in very, very, very many situations where someone struggles with gender identity. It’s an act of self-rejection, essentially.

All the people who were cheering him on and encouraging him to mutilate his body with surgery were essentially validating his hatred of himself and his sense of worthlessness. The people who truly valued him were not the ones rallying around him to celebrate him as some brave victim of biology forging his own new path or as some renegade daring to defy tradition or society or whatever and live life on his own terms; the people who truly loved him were the ones who (gently) spoke truth to him, treated him with dignity, and helped him overcome the trauma of his past.

In a sane world, we would be laboring to the utmost in the fields of medicine, psychology, and psychiatry to help people like this, not facilitating their self-destruction and affirming their twisted self-perceptions.

Thank you for sharing that. I don’t know if that is the case for all people with such feelings, but it’s certainly possible to be sympathetic with them even if it isn’t. Unfortunately, I think a lot of people confuse accommodation with compassion. I can understand the impulse, but sometimes the right thing to do is the harder thing to do; namely to not contribute to someone’s illusion, and to do so in a sensitive way especially if pain has driven them thus far.

Facebook adding 50 new gender options or something reasons to have no interest in Facebook

There are some people with various degrees of both/neither gender attributes, but 50? If you get beyond 4 or 5, you’re just making shit up.

S. D. on February 14, 2014 at 11:53 AM

The ‘party of science’ wants to deny chromosomal gender determination with the addition, or elimination, of external body parts. You can no more change your gender through the surgical manipulation of your ‘packaging’ than you can make a McDonald’s burger a Ruth’s Chris steak with a fancier plate and the subtraction of the bun.

Keep on truckin’, progs. Good luck!

xNavigator on February 14, 2014 at 1:26 PM

that is a good analogy. XD

This isn’t trivial. This is Room 101 stuff. They are presenting you with a boy and requiring you not to simply say, but to believe “girl”. I say “boy” and “girl” specifically because the forums they’ve chosen for these confrontations have generally been high schools and grammar schools.

And this is the second wave of this effort. The first wave came in the 90′s when they started forcing incoming university freshmen to internalize this nonsense under disciplinary pressure as part of their orientation curriculum. Now those subjects are out in the world among us serving as a base of soft ascent to this nonsense.

And gender is determined by the spin of a 50-slot roulette wheel! ;)

Makes you wonder what gender ‘the party of science’ would use to classify people who have lost gender-specific body parts to disease or accident. After all, it appears to depend purely on cosmetic packaging and personal choice, not your chromosomes and science-based reality. Had a double mastectomy and hysterectomy? SPIN THE WHEEL!

Ahhh – but that’s the beauty of their system – body parts, biology, chromosomes are all irrelevant – all that matters is what you THINK you are. It’s all purely in your head.

I’m not joking: you qualify as “transgender” with that. Feel free to use the ladies’ room at work and if anyone calls you a pervert and tries to have you fired, call a civil rights attorney.

eh on February 15, 2014 at 2:02 PM

Gender is a linguistic term. Sex is the descriptor for male or female. These people are really, REALLY SICK.

francesca on February 15, 2014 at 3:13 PM

To see how weak the ideology of gender confusion politics are you ought to check out this Yahoo blog in which the author winds up chasing her own tail. The author is addressing the episode of South Park in which Mr. Garrison get’s an operation to become a woman, prompting Kyle to get an operation to become black and Kyle’s father to get an operation to become a dolphin. The author admirably takes the satire in stride, but only because she is confident that the joke doesn’t cut too deeply:

I suppose it’s time to address this common objection to the acknowledgment of transgender people… There are many, many reasons that “transgender” is a valid identity, while “transspecies” or “transracial” are not.

As emphatic as that statement is, it’s a hoot to see the author almost immediatly paint herself into the corner of arguing the “transracial” premise:

Transracialism is a bit more complicated …because there are some cases in which it is a valid identity. …Since race is partially a social construct, it can be effectively compared to gender in some ways. …If a person has the “behavioral, cultural, or psychological traits typically associated with” a different race, and these traits were acquired through familial and cultural influences…

…however, …

However, this isn’t what people are talking about… When people draw this comparison, they’re pointing out that they simply don’t understand what gender is

You just don’t get it, man.

Though the author manages to tunnel themselves up and out of this fiasco without tangling with the “transspecies” premise, a person who insists that they are a dragon in the comments below is shocked and dismayed to have been made the target of such bigotry from someone who ought to know better:

I have to respond here, since this article has some pretty glaring factual inaccuracies about transspecies individuals that need to be addressed. I’m assuming that Genevra Reid wrote this article to defend transgender legitimacy, since the alternative of intentionally offending other minority groups is unacceptable for a Yahoo contributor. I’m posting this from my experiences as a transspecies dragon. (In case you were wondering, I mean “dragon” in a species identity sense, not a physical sense.)

First, I need to make an analogy. Sex is to species as gender identity is to…

It’s just so full of fail you must check it out. It doesn’t have to end there, though. There are entire sub-cultures devoted to people insisting that they are actual vampires or actual werewolves. And couldn’t a “transwoman” su for her 14th amendment right to a pap smear?
