Breaking: Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers to deliver GOP response to SOTU

posted at 3:55 pm on January 23, 2014 by

She’s the first Republican woman to do the honors (solo) since New Jersey Governor Christie Todd Whitman addressed the nation in 1995 — although Republicans didn’t give any State of the Union responses from 2001-2008.  McMorris-Rodgers is a member of House leadership, a Congresswoman from Washington State, and a mother of three.  The party rolled out its announcement with this video, which is well done.  The bit about her son with Down Syndrome is really lovely.  Smart:

It seems as though the party is really making a concerted effort to push back against the Left’s “war on women” meme:

By the way, quick memo to male Republicans: The media and their Democratic pals will pounce on anything you say about women’s sex lives, no matter the context.  Best to avoid the topic altogether.  I’ll leave you with yet another a reminder that “women’s rights” and “abortion” are not synonymous:

Correction: She’s the first establishment Republican woman to do so. Michele Bachmann did it a couple years ago.

Bachmann did not deliver the GOP response to the State of the Union. She delivered the Tea Party response, which will come from Sen. Mike Lee this year, I believe.

Guy is correct.

Guy’s observation regarding the demographics of abortion support is interesting. Ages 35-54 are not typically when females seek abortions; rather they are the ages of women whose daughters are getting pregnant out of wedlock. Always important for the offspring to have a safety net in case the condom falls off.

I don’t think msm even aired it.

Best to avoid the topic altogether.

I disagree. Republicans can and should push back and present articulate positions and truth to counter the Democrat’s lies. Instead, they avoid the conflict OR acquiesce to the Democrats and agree with them (See uncontrolled spending; balanced budget; illegal immigration). Republicans should not be surprised at their consistent losing streak with that battle plan.

Hence, why I put “establishment” in italics. McMorris-Rodgers is just a RINO shill. This is ultimately a big “meh”.

Agreed. If we continue to allow the MSM LIV crowd to shape the narrative then it becomes engrained in the meta. You have to push back against their “War on Women” BS.

She voted to cut veteran pensions and she is for amnesty.

TAARP on January 23, 2014 at 5:48 PM

Better watch out, Mrs. Rodgers. The last Republican woman who had a kid with Downs got thrown into a meat grinder. We can’t even mention her name anymore.

Kafir on January 23, 2014 at 7:26 PM

She’s all for amnesty, Guy should wake up and realize that there’s a reason why members here have silently protested his views by not commenting on any of the video threads he participates in here.

Beat me to it. Was just going to mention McMorris Rodgers’ support for amnesty, even though she promised “no amnesty” during her campaign.

bluegill on January 23, 2014 at 8:04 PM

What is her response going to be – I didn’t like Obama’s tie? Does anyone really believe anything that comes out of a Republican’s mouth any longer?

How ’bout just a strong two-word rebuttal by Rep. Joe Wilson?

ShainS on January 24, 2014 at 12:09 AM

I tend to agree with GB on conservatives avoiding certain issues. It’s not whether they’re right or wrong, it’s how they will be misconstrued and twisted by the Democrats and their media cohorts. However, when this does happen, they really have to push back and force the media to defend what they’re promoting.

There was talk about giving classes on subjects and how to articulate the message. The Democrats do this all the time. I’d hate for the Republicans to sound like the mind-numbed robots the Democrats put out, but consistency is good. The party, however, needs to have some core principles, that everyone knows and is agreed on and that everyone can defend articulately. That would go a long way towards improving their messaging.
