Timing: Healthcare.gov crashes just hours before Obama presser

posted at 12:35 pm on December 20, 2013 by

This might just be the single worst news day of the year for the Obama administration, and it may be self-inflicted:

With less than two hours to go before President Obama is scheduled to give his year-end news conference, people are not able to apply for health insurance on HealthCare.gov.

The home page is still present, but when one tries to apply for a health plan, the site says the “system is down.” A message on the screen says it is part of “scheduled maintenance.”

Scheduled maintenance? It seems so:

That “scheduled maintenance” came just after OFA tweeted this over its “Barack Obama” account:

Nice work!

FLASH: Press Conference has been cancelled. The President is on his way to 7-Eleven to pick up some Mountain Dew Slurpees. He’s got a lot of code to bang out tonight.

Wow… That should be illegal. They are tweeting out ‘Come here and check your health options’ .. and it leads you to an OFA page where you enter email and zip. They are setting up a gateway between the user and Healthcare.gov that collects email address and zip code before you are sent on to the official government ran healthcare.gov.

That is a very very shady method of collecting more user data to be used in their electioneering.

Remain Calm! King Barack the Magnificent will address the gov’t website shortly. Using his amazing ability to persuade, The Chosen One will have the website up in short order just by the sheer power of his oratory.

…well…the NSA is in trouble…how else are they going to get the info?

KOOLAID2 on December 20, 2013 at 12:59 PM

Let me add, they are tweeting this from @barackobama so basically using an ‘official’ twitter account to trick users into going to an OFA page thinking it’s an official HealthCare.gov page and then giving up their zip and email. I work in SEO/SEM/EM etc. and this is what we do but we’re private businesses. It’s like us being hired by HP to build a portal to a new Ultrabook and making a link on to the ‘Buy Now’ page but collecting user data along the way and US, the developers, keeping that data and then sending the user on to the page at HP.

They probably claim that the website is down for scheduled maintenance regardless of the reason that the website is down.

blink on December 20, 2013 at 12:50 PM

..of course they do. Sure sounds a lot better than, “We have no f**king idea what’s going with this Charley Foxtrot operation and we’re running around here like chickens with our heads cut off in the midst of a Chinese fire drill.”

Isn’t it more newsworthy when the site is actually up and running?

Bitter Clinger on December 20, 2013 at 1:24 PM

He’ll boldly proclaim that it’s going swimmingly, though, you can count on that.

jdpaz on December 20, 2013 at 1:26 PM

I’m in I/T. Nobody but nobody schedules maintenance in the middle of the work day. It is always, always on the weekend and even then usually in the middle of the night.

Like blink said, they just throw that up whenever the site is down because they don’t want to look more foolish and incompetent than they already do.

Kafir on December 20, 2013 at 1:39 PM

So, at what point does this count as driving the car into a ditch…?

JohnGalt23 on December 20, 2013 at 1:42 PM

Obama must wake up screaming at night in a cold sweat ever since the healthcare.gov kickoff.

I LOVE it!

the website is down for unscheduled maintenance!

Sachiko on December 20, 2013 at 2:06 PM

It’s become pretty obvious they had Obungler’s sign language guy set up the web-site, and probably wrote the original bill, as well.

I know nothing about IT in any depth. Could an outside agency be causing these crashes at inconvenient times just to make the administration look bad?

DaveDief on December 20, 2013 at 2:29 PM

“Scheduled” maintenance is every 2 hours…how about scheduling when it works…

They don’t have to, it is continuously going down…that site has been going down more often than Monica…

It is possible, but not probable. Sophisticated systems can detect and block offending IP addresses very quickly, and… Oh. Wait.

In an honest world, the Atty General of the US would have already condemned this fraud and would have a warrent to shut down the fraudulent website.

Of course, we have a criminal as Atty General, who has politicized the office into an unrecognizable mess, and nothing will be done to stop this clear case of fraud.

Freddy on December 20, 2013 at 4:02 PM

I read a couple days ago that Obama hadn’t signed up for ObamaCare yet. He better get going or he’ll miss the fun times on ObmaCare and be stuck with his current great insurance.

RJL on December 20, 2013 at 4:34 PM

So their ad is correct, you do have to talk about getting healthcare… because actually getting healthcare is impossible now :P

Ukiah on December 20, 2013 at 4:38 PM

Four state exchange directors went on vacation and resigned.

Obama’s going on vacation.

Can he resign too?

Fully functional as promised. Remember that, too. That as his double down. How does this pos sleep at night.

jaywemm on December 20, 2013 at 9:15 PM

Typical jargon. When I worked for Microsoft and the systems were down, we were told to inform our customers that the system was updating.

This clown can’t run anything but his mouth. Good riddance.

jaywemm on December 20, 2013 at 9:15 PM

Stalin had no troubles sleeping at night.
It’s interesting that Stalin, as well as Obama, always kept themselves aloof of the actual governing process. When bad things happened, it was always bcs Stalin didn’t know & the wreckers would then be hunted down, no matter how close they were to Dear Leader & dealt with.
The parallels to Stalin & Obama are quite a few.
And the people that work with Obama that beleeeeeeeeive in the mission of socialism AKA communism will continue to work toward the destruction of liberty. Even if they’re hung out to dry & thrown under the bus.
In fact, some of them, as during the Stalin era, will take their punishment gladly.

Taking a system down for maintenance on a Friday? Are you kidding me?
