The most awesome prank ever — or just a PR blitz?

It has to be at least in the running for the title. The video has over 700,000 viewings in the one day since it got posted, and plenty of beer enthusiasts should drive that number out of sight in no time. But is this really on the level?

UPI says yes:

The prank, which was recorded by 14 cameras planted around the target’s Auckland home, involved the friends enlisting the help of brewer Tui to reconnect the house’s entire plumbing system so the taps would dispense beer instead of water, ninemsn.com reported Tuesday. …

A Tui spokesman said the idea was put forward by the group of friends, who had the professional experience to rig the home’s plumbing.

“It was an idea that was put up by Tui and they knew friends of friends of people that worked at Tui,” he said. “They’re all legit mates and they are constantly playing pranks on each other so it was a match made in heaven.”

I smell a marketing strategy more than a prank, but YMMV.

It looks like a PR stunt but they didn’t actually call out a brand of beer so maybe its legit.

Rigging the hot water is simple because you can grab it from the hot water tank. Would you want to do that? Dishwasher? Washing machine? The cold water would be tough as well. You don’t want to mess with the hot water tank’s intake. Well, I suppose you could if you really wanted. I don’t think you’d want to waste beer in the toilet. Then there’s the bath and washing machine. Unless you’re lucky and they’re all together, that’s a lot of work. With PEX, wouldn’t be too bad or costly. Still time consuming.

That’s what I was wondering.

That, and when it gets put back, are those compression couplings going to get taken out?

But man, what a nice crawlspace to work in…

I, for one, relish the thought of brushing my teeth with beer.

Wrong country. Aussies and New Zealand are like people from Michigan and Ohio.

Most plumbers are smarter than the ones in the video – tapping into the main cold water line with one keg would have been much more efficient and done the job.
