Photo of the day: Bloomberg points hundreds of guns at audience

posted at 4:22 pm on August 19, 2013 by

Today NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg and NYC Police Commissioner Ray Kelly announced the seizure of hundreds of guns. The problem? During the press conference and in an effort to take advantage of a good photo-op, the clueless anti-gun zealots pointed the seized firearms at...the audience.

Clearly Bloomberg doesn’t know much about muzzle awareness, but don’t worry, this guy is here to help.

UPDATE: For good measure, here are the four Holy Grail rules of gun safety.

1) ALL guns are always loaded.

2) NEVER let the muzzle cover anything which you are not willing to destroy

3) Keep your finger OFF the trigger until your sights are on target.

4) ALWAYS be sure of your target.

UPDATE II: It gets worse. Many of the guns had the actions/bolts closed and the safeties off.

Good job, KP, on the Levin book panel — apt question.

there’s a dude on youotube named hickok45. Saw the exact same rules on one of his gun safety videos the other day. You can never be too safe w/ a gun.

I thought rule 4 was “Always be sure of your target, and what’s behind it.”

Wansn’t rule two to never point the gun at something you aren’t prepared to shoot at?

Well Bloomberg and his cohorts were certainly not going to point the guns at themselves! Sheesh! They have important jobs to do.

And what in hell are magazines doing in some of those guns. Yeesh.

Out of curiosity…
If these were seized by police because they were illegal, then they would be evidence in various crimes. Yet, I see no evidence tags on any of the guns. Nothing denoting a chain of custody. Nothing to preserve forensic evidence such as fingerprints or DNA.
Am I missing something?

irishgladiator63 on August 19, 2013 at 5:52 PM

Magazines are in the guns so Bloomberg can say “Look at all these high capacity, assault magazines”

Katie Pavlich on August 19, 2013 at 6:02 PM

It is clear all these ignorant marxist progessives are very dangerous and need to be disarmed. And I think they know it. That’s why they’re trying to disarm us first.
Remember, this ass is a modern gestapo pig. He’ll knock when he comes for your firearms. He’ll never knock again.

..I am a little at sea hear. Lewis Awerback is holding a .45 and POINTING IT DIRECTLY AT THE CAMERA (i.e., viewer)? Also, can someone tell me what’s up with the muzzle of that pistol?

Hope not to appear clueless here; just asking.

Not that I would want to support Bloomy in any way, but I see this all the time at gun shows – tables full of guns pointed out at the people walking by – also tables where they are all pointed in at the seller, and tables where they’re all pointed sideways down the table line – which points them at other people……

Interesting catch – the gun looks like it has a plug in the barrel.

Also – I couldn’t stand to listen to a whole safety brief from that guy – sounds like Ben Stein as Ferris Bueller’s teacher….

Which is definitely dangerous to the person standing next to the shooter. We had a guy blow up a long barrel revolver right next to us at a range last year cuz he kept shooting with a round stuck in the barrel. My son was shooting at the time and felt a hot spray of air and shrapnel on his face and left arm – luckily nothing big so no harm done….

It seems to be a training barrel.

Completely solid – no chamber – no barrel channel.

And it extends from the slide so that you can see and know it’s for training purposes only…and won’t slap in a mag and try to cycle it. You’ll change barrels before carrying.

Solaratov on August 19, 2013 at 7:46 PM

There is one fundamental safety rule for firearms, and all others are extensions of it. It was codified by Col. Jeff Cooper, as follows;

NEVER POINT ANY FIREARM AT ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO SEE DESTROYED.

Not shouting, just showing how it should be posted over every station at every shooting range. Preferably in letters about four inches high, in bright red with black outline on a white sign background.

As for Bloomberg, like most hoplophobes, he knows nothing of firearms and what’s more does not want to know. Like a medieval theologian, he is convinced that his mind is “pure”, and that knowledge of the “dark arts” would sully it.

Given the choice between responsible knowledge and “morally superior” ignorance, he’s the type that will choose willful ignorance every time.

Hoplophobes, socialists, “environmentalists”- all cut from the same cloth. They invariably betray their formidable stupidity re their favorite bete noirs every time they open their mouths.

And yet, for all weapons safety fail, they continue to miss the most basic points:

None of those firearms, without a person to manipulate the action, injured anybody. And no one, in the presence of all those firearms, was suddenly motivated to commit violence.

It goes back to the old adage that most people think other people are just like them. These twits have no idea how to properly handle the big scary boomsticks, so they immediately assume none of us do either. Ergo gun control.

hamradio on August 20, 2013 at 4:19 AM

And that is the fundamental reason you can’t trust a Liberal with a gun. They don’t respect the tool. That, and they are emotionally too immature to actually be trusted with a firearm or other deadly device. The problem is that they think that because they aren’t emotionally stable enough to handle a firearm that you must not be able to either, in spite of any evidence to the contrary. Comes with “Liberal hubris” and delusions of intellectualism.

—————

There has only been one “accidental discharge” at a gun show that I’ve been to that was the result of the vendor’s negligence. And they were permanently banned from ever participating in future shows.

All the rest that I’ve heard of have been the results of LEO clearing weapons incorrectly. And, well, since LEO from NYC brought the firearms, yeah, I’d be concerned that they weren’t all in a bolt open/bolt flag/zip tie indicator.

And what in hell are magazines doing in some of those guns. Yeesh.

dentarthurdent on August 19, 2013 at 6:40 PM

..then, Art, you clearly have not been looking for something as common as a .45:

The M1911 is still carried by some U.S. forces. Its formal designation as of 1940 was Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911 for the original Model of 1911 or Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911A1 for the M1911A1, adopted in 1924. The designation changed to Pistol, Caliber .45, Automatic, M1911A1 in the Vietnam era.

Except at the gun show and in the store, if they are within reach of anyone, they have the action open or they have something blocking the chamber in place. You can’t count a store where they are in a locked case as constituting the same sort of safety hazard, until the weapon is removed – at which time, they are cleared while pointed in a safe direction, and handed to the customer with the action open.

GWB on August 20, 2013 at 9:31 AM

..not at all. And the word you are searching for is punctiliious.

Art pointed out that he never saw any automatics in a gun store and I was merely informing him that the OFFICIAL MILITARY NOMENCLATURE for their former standard-issue sidearm included the word AUTOMATIC (not semi-automatic). Classically, pistols like that have been referred to as automatics. I refer you to Wikipedia’s disambiguation for the term Automatic Pistol. I am sure this is only anecdotal but in various crime dramas the term automatic is used. (For example, cf. various episodes of Dragnet where Jack Webb asked a vic if the perp was carrying a “revolver or an automatic”.)

He more correctly should have said “fully automatic” because, indeed, a pistol like the M1911 (Glock, Baretta, etc.), while semi-automatic, is certainly automatic.
