PA: Kerry said he’d get a settlement freeze

posted at 1:35 pm on August 17, 2013 by

How are those Israeli-Palestinian talks going after their five-year hiatus?  Why, it’s almost like time has stood still. The effort kicked off with the Palestinian Authority accusing the US of deception on settlements:

Palestinian officials in Ramallah have accused the US Administration of deceiving and misinforming the Palestinian Authority with regards to the peace talks with Israel.

The officials told the London-based Al-Hayat newspaper that they were concerned about the US Administration’s role in the peace talks with Israel, especially its position on plans to build new homes in settlements and east Jerusalem neighborhoods. …

A senior Palestinian official told Al-Hayat that US Secretary of State John Kerry gave the Palestinians assurances that Israel would decrease construction in settlement blocs. The official also claimed that Kerry promised that Israel would halt construction in settlements outside the blocs during the peace negotiations.

“It’s obvious that Kerry was either deceived by the Israelis or that he’s deceiving us in order to keep us at the negotiating table,” the official said.

Yeah … just like old times.  Plus, Abbas offered this as a measure of just how much hope to put into this process:

It quoted Abbas as telling the officials: “I have told the US Administration 10 times, and I’m ready to tell them again that we won’t accept any solution that contradicts the Palestinian vision.”

Historically speaking, the “Palestinian vision” has been a state from the Mediterranean to the Jordan, which would leave nothing but memories for the Israelis.  It doesn’t sound as though we should expect much from these talks, although this might just be Abbas’ way of getting the usual niceties out of the way first. Cairo, Yemen, Syria in flames… but let’s focus on the PA, right Mr. Secretary?

Kerry can do it.

He speaks French and has a magic hat.

No, the Israelis did not deceive Kerry. While Kerry may or may not be stupid enough to say such a thing, who in their right mind would believe it? It’s not like Kerry can tell Israel what to do.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the Palestinian displeasure:

Either Kerry is full of sh1t or the PA spokesliars are. Maybe both. What settlement freeze? It is not happening in a million years unless the nonexistent peace agreement is actually in the stages of implementation. Both Kerry and the PA should know that this is the national mood in Israel. To make such statements in public reeks of some sort of manipulation.

Maybe Kerry could offer to hold a Christmas in Cambodia party to make all sides happy again?

This story reminds me of that time Kerry spent Christmas in Cambodia.

I’m wondering who is the audience for all this kabuki. In Israel, what you see is what you get. In “Palestine” it’s lie after lie after lie because of their corruption and illegitimacy among their own “people”, and the show they have to put on in front of their international donors (daddies).

And as to America, your secretary of state needs to make a show for an even bigger audience… the Muslim world, the “palestinians” themselves. NYT editorial team, the Muslim constituencies in France and UK (who make their governments, aka “Europe”, yell at US about “palestine”)… it’s all such a show.

What I mean is, it all looks to me like lip service. And because of this st4pid lip service, Israel is forced to enter into these ridiculous negotiations (ok fine) but as a precondition they have to release 104 Tsarnaevs. Murderers. Nice, huh?

I think he should offer both sidesfree ketchup as a way of getting them to the bargaining table. Nothing says peace like kethup
