Krauthammer: Our lawless president

posted at 12:07 pm on August 16, 2013 by

A devastating and succinct indictment:

Such [legal] niceties must not stand in the way of an administration’s agenda. Indeed, the very next day, it was revealed that the administration had unilaterally waived Obamacare’s cap on a patient’s annual out-of-pocket expenses — a one-year exemption for selected health insurers that is nowhere permitted in the law. It was simply decreed by an obscure Labor Department regulation.

Which followed a presidentially directed 70-plus percent subsidy for the insurance premiums paid by congressmen and their personal staffs — under a law that denies subsidies for anyone that well-off.

Which came just a month after the administration’s equally lawless suspension of one of the cornerstones of Obamacare: the employer mandate.

Which followed hundreds of Obamacare waivers granted by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to selected businesses, unions and other well-lobbied, very special interests.

Nor is this kind of rule-by-decree restricted to health care. In 2012, the immigration service was ordered to cease proceedings against young illegal immigrants brought here as children. Congress had refused to pass such a law (the DREAM Act) just 18 months earlier. Obama himself had repeatedly said that the Constitution forbade him from enacting it without Congress. But with the fast approach of an election that could hinge on the Hispanic vote, Obama did exactly that. Unilaterally.

Read the whole thing.

He’s going to keep abusing his office until someone does something about it. And nobody is going to do anything about it. End of story.

Who cares about lawless Obama. Mitt Romney is a racist!

Bow down before your King.

If our President doesn’t have to obey the laws then we don’t either. I should probably thank Obama for providing the example on how to interact with the IRS… just ignore existing laws!

If everyone followed his example, DC would be a lot poorer…

CK has effectively collected all of O’s offenses against the constitution in a piece that’s short enough for low information voters to read to the end and grasp. Share it everywhere…

lilacs on August 16, 2013 at 12:50 PM

It’s like the weather, everybody talks about it but no one does anything about it. Who is going to stop him..? CJ John Roberts..? Congress..? Who..?

d1carter on August 16, 2013 at 1:32 PM

CK is right and awesome, but where is Nathan when you need him ? (from 2 Sam 12, Nathan tells David, “YOU are the man !)

- but this presupposes the man has a conscience. But it would help a bit for people to start calling a spade a spade, er, a purposeful lawbreaker.

williampeck1958 on August 16, 2013 at 1:49 PM

The scariest thing isn’t what Obama is doing. Go read CK’s piece at WaPo, then read the comments. Those people are the scary part. They actually think it’s okay for Obama to do what he’s doing via regulations because he’s THEIR guy. They think the IRS targeting was okay because Obama is their guy. He’s our dictator, so it’s okay. Anything bad, they REALLY believe, is, was, and always will be Bush’s fault. How can we ever get this country out of this mess when people are this stupid and ignorant? I fear we are going to have to completely crash before reality kicks in.

I tried that, and what I found is that there are WAY TOO MANY cowards in this country to rely on people en masse protesting against the government. Way. Too. Many.

If you are a small government conservative and believe in our constitution, you have to be an admirer of Charles Krauthammer. He is one of the best common sense commentators of our generation.

A devastating and succinct indictment

Devastating? I don’t think that word means what you think it means. While his analysis might be accurate and succinct, nothing will be done about it. Obama is the King and Congress is the court eunuch.

cep on August 16, 2013 at 3:44 PM

It used to be the voters looting the Treasury. Now Obama’s doing it himself. Like a kid in a candy store. Or a young employee at Baskin-Robbins who gives away free ice cream to his friends.

I read the WaPo comments too and you just have to shake your head at the mindset there. Maybe they’re being paid by Valerie Jarrett in an effort to detract from the points made by CK. I hope that’s it!

I sort of came to this the other day, in traffic. I’ve been really irritated by drivers who are texting while driving ever since they actually made it illegal in Vegas. But then I thought, what the hell? If the prez doesn’t have to obey laws, why should anyone? It’s “whatever you can get away with” these days. You wanna get in a wreck, fine. If you don’t, you’ve gotten away with it. Choomboy is a fine example for everyone. I think I’ll start seeing what I can get away with–totally opposite of how I’ve lived my life up ’til now. Screw it.

SailorMark on August 16, 2013 at 4:32 PM

If the law is not what is plainly written, but is whatever the president and his agents decide, what’s left of the law?

The law is whatever they chose to enforce when they decide to enforce it, if they decide to enforce it.

And decision to enforce or not depends on many things. Sometimes it depends on what you say and do, or don’t say and don’t do.

And you don’t even have to break the law for the “enforcement” to have the desired affect. The process itself is the punishment.

This is how Chicago operates.

Ask any restaurant owner in the city how free their free speech is if they decide to publicly bad mouth the Mayor. Or ask the owner of the Cubs.

The big difference here is that Comrade O is publicly announcing what he will not enforce, from the WH. And Congress is giving people like Sebelius and the EPA extraordinary powers to issue waivers and exemptions at a whim.

Chicago Machine thugs only wish they could get away with that.

Since nothing is being done about all of this, the only unknown is how far the “lawlessness” can be taken.

It can be taken as far as people allow it to be taken, by continuing to elect people who do this. Which signals the end of the Republic. Sure, they will still call it a republic. As in The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

the left/government class are getting pretty hysterical in the comments over at WP…some 3K plus. mostly saying it is Bush’s fault, and that precious barry can do no wrong

the funny line in the column is that Holder is a liberal in a hurry.

meanwhile, the goofballs in charge of the RNC take aim at…well, republicans, conservatives…whoever. Do whatever it takes to help barry

I too believed that until the day he asked Sarah Palin to leave the room so the reasonable people could talk about Øbamacare. There is not now nor was there then any reason to have a reasonable discussion of that monstrosity. I still like CK, but now I take him with a grain of salt.

Charles has had some other lapses.

Like when he said a $4/gallon gas tax, or thereabouts, might be a good idea.

The temptation to tinker and try to socially and economically engineer the nation (and the world) is often irresistible, even among those who profess they oppose such things.

Usually the rationalization is national security. However, using the “six degrees of separation”, ahem, methodology almost anything can be turned into a national security issue. The Soviets and the Nazis were very good at making such convenient multiple intervening dots connections. Many American socialist are very good at the game, too.

Thomas Friedman has made a career as a sophisticated connect-the-dots flim-flam fraud doing this.

Everything is connected to everything else, ya’know. Please pass the bong.

Since we’re not a nation of laws do I have to follow them too? Can’t I just say I’m exempt?

old school on August 16, 2013 at 11:01 PM

Why doesnt anybody sue the administration over this? If Obama and his gang are so out of bounds, why doesnt the GOP pursue judicial remedies?

Yes, it was his comment about obama having a “first-rate intellect” that first made me suspect his analytical skills.

As for his list of obama’s lawless acts, he omitted a few, such as obama’s blatant violation of federal law that prohibits illegal aliens from receiving food stamps.

obama not only knowingly pays out billions of dollars in food stamps every year to illegal aliens, but he also spends millions of tax dollars actively recruiting more illegal alien food stamp recipients by running Spanish-language ads in Mexico advertising the fact that illegal aliens can receive U.S. food stamps!

But don’t worry. Congress has found out about obama’s lawlessness and flagrant waste of billions of taxpayer dollars — and they wrote him a sternly-worded letter to express their displeasure.

We can all sleep better now, knowing that our nation’s future rests in such competent and ethical hands.

… except only the King, and his friends and family, may feel free to ignore the law.

You, peasant, will comply or you will be imprisoned, and bad things will happen to your family while you’re away.

Have a nice day.

I hope I am wrong and I am the only person in the USA that did not no this but here goes.
Obama in 2012 signed the NDAA bill which gives him the power to detain any American indefinitely based on their cell phone or internet usage. No due process required?
