Video: “Ender’s Game” trailer

posted at 4:37 pm on May 9, 2013 by

I haven’t read the book and I’m not sure I’m nerdy enough to appreciate the movie, as nerdy as I am. But it’s not a superhero flick, and that’s all that matters. Two thumbs up.

If not for Orson Scott Card blessing this movie, I’d be appalled.

Problems:
1) Ender never knew he was fighting a war. This isn’t a spoiler, it’s apparent with every turn of the page and he’s still unaware.

2) The movie shows the ending of the book, and probably the movie, at the end of the trailer.

3) Harrison Ford is way too much actor for his part. The book is about Ender and the other kids, with adults in the sidelines.

4) Ender isn’t as serious or emotional/gun-ho in the book as he is in this trailer.

2 thumbs down for “Ender’s Game”
2 thumbs up for “movie called Ender’s Game with Harrison Ford in it that will probably be good because it was blessed by Orson Scott Card.”

Awesome book, and hopefully the movie. Can’t believe you would reveal the entire subplot in one line ruining one of the most interesting twist in the story because you assume everyone would figure it out pronto.

Filetandrelease:

The subplot never made it into the movie, so there’s nothing to ruin. It was obvious in the trailer that Ender was in it to win it and knew he was fighting a war.

Obvious to those who read the book perhaps. He was “in it to win it” is the basis for the story. All I can say is that if I hadn’t read the book, I would regret having read your post.

This trailer makes it looks like he was signed up to fight a war, willingly, and knowing what he was doing. The whole trailer talks about how they’re going to fight the war in a new way, outside the box, etc., using kids. At no time during the course of the book did you think this was the case. And then they show the surprise ending of the book at the end of the trailer. You should be upset at this trailer, not at me for pointing out the flaws 🙂

Point of order: In the novel, Ender knew from the start that he was signed up to fight a war. But there was a twist.

That is all.

Bat Chain:

Nope, he never signed up to fight a war. He got sent to Battle School to avoid getting into trouble for something he did on Earth. Battle School is never perceived by Ender as fighting a war.

They picked him for Battle School because of that something.

Great book. Great actors. All I can say is this better not suck.

Agreed.

Not sure that was the ending since…that wasn’t the ending from the book. But it’s the weapon. Probably an earlier deployment.

TexasDan:

I think it was the ending from the book, because of how it was used. It seems like they were using it the way they did in the book.

Ender never knew he was fighting a war. This isn’t a spoiler, it’s apparent with every turn of the page and he’s still unaware.

However, he knew he was training to fight a war. It is not obvious from the end of the trailer whether he thinks he’s running a training sim.

You had to read the whole series to pick up the point of it. There was a lot more to the story … a lot more to the learning of a moral lesson about thinking and analyzing what is going on around you … in knowing when everything you think you know … you don’t and in the knowing that you are being manipulated, there is the possibility of resistance … of manipulating the manipulators.

The Ender series is a warning about jingoism and blind obedience. It is a mind-opening suggestion about where we are … and the need for resistance and sedition against evil and tyranny.

You ALL should read more of OSC’s books.
