BREAKING: Officer shot, explosives deployed in Massachusetts; possible Boston suspects identified, at least one captured; Update: Correction added

posted at 4:00 am on April 19, 2013 by

Major overnight news.  I’m covering it at Townhall.  The bottom line so far, via Business Insider:

Boston police have identified the two men as suspects in a string of violent incidents outside of Boston as Mike Mulugeta and Sunil Tripathi. The Boston Globe is reporting that the men are the Boston Marathon bombing suspects, and one of them is in custody while the other remains on the loose.  The FBI has not confirmed the names.  Tripathi, 22, is a missing Brown University student who disappeared on March 16. The FBI joined the search of him on March 25.  The naming of the suspects comes after a string of incidents near MIT’s campus in Cambridge, Mass., that left one MIT police officer dead. At one point at least 25 gunshots heard in the span on a minute or two.

Authorities say explosives were detonated during the chase, which may have begun when witnesses saw at least one of the men “pulling on car doors,” perhaps in a desperate attempt to get out of town following the FBI’s photo release last night.  Developing…

Update (AP): Multiple people, including Ace, who were listening to the scanner last night say PD did indeed mention Tripathi’s name at some point, but obviously the cops were wrong. The suspects are the Tsarnaev brothers. Or were: Tamerlan Tsarnaev is dead.

To the lowlife, cowardly subhuman vermin who did this: your days are numbered. May you burn in hell for all eternity.

Bravo to our law enforcement and the public for ensuring the filthy pigs who did this had nowhere to run and nowhere to hide.

Now they are reporting that they had military training and were from overseas, so not these college kids.

We’ve been following this almost since it broke in the QOTD thread – on local Boston tv. Suspect 1 is dead, and number 2 is on the loose. After killing a campus cop at M.I.T., they carjacked an SUV and threw hand grenades and other explosives at pursuing police.

The chase wound up in Watertown, where they shot it out with police, critically wounding another cop. Suspect 1 was fatally wounded, but white guy, number 2 escaped.

Wow. Is this a case of poetic justice? The dead suspect has “gunshot and blast wounds”. Did he get shot and one of the explosives on his person detonate?

I sure hope this report is accurate.

I don’t think we want these guys dead, yet. Sure hope his cell/satellite phone wasn’t destroyed in the blast but it probably was.

Pray they catch the other one alive and let the trial begin.

Watertown is in lock-down .. for the pubic safety, of course ..

FIFY

I don’t know if I want these guys on trial. With a trial, there’s always the possibility of them going free.

Send them to Gitmo.
