Sick: Harry Reid exploits Marines’ deaths to knock sequester

posted at 3:54 pm on March 19, 2013 by

RCP has the video, Katie has the write-up.  Upon hearing about a deadly explosion that killed seven Marines in his home state, the Senate Majority Leader raced to the floor to false imply that the accident had something to do with sequestration.  Dead Marines, you say?  Why, this might be a fine opportunity for me to attack Republicans!   This is a new low, even for him:

As I indicated, it was quite a big explosion. We’ll follow this news very closely. I will do whatever I can going forward to support the United States military and the families of the fallen Marines.  Mr. President, it’s very important we continue training our military, so important. But one of the things in sequester is we cut back in training and maintenance. That’s the way sequester was written. Now, the bill that’s on the floor, we hope to pass today helps that a little bit. At least in the next six months, it allows the military some degree of ability to move things around a little bit. Flexibility, we call it, and that’s good. But we have to be very vigilant. This sequester should go away. We have cut already huge amounts of money in deficit reduction. It’s just not appropriate, Mr. President, that our military can’t train and do the maintenance necessary. These men and women, our Marines were training there in Hawthorne. And with this sequester, it’s going to cut back this stuff.

The USMC is, needless to say, displeased with this ghoulish attempt at partisan point-scoring (via NBC News):

Now I can tell you, Marine Corps officials this afternoon are taking a strong exception to what Harry Reid implied. Saying that this exercise, for example, was planned well in advance, had nothing to do with the budget cuts. There were no corners cut, and if they couldn’t afford to have all the safety precautions into place, they wouldn’t do the exercise. And in fact, one Marine Corps official told us a short time ago that he considers this nothing but pure political posturing on the backs of these dead Marines.

Democrats have been caught lying about President Obama’s sequester cuts over and over and over again.  Indeed, Jim Geraghty flagged another dubious anti-sequester ploy at Miami International Airport just today.  But instantly exploiting a deadly explosion to make a crass political point about unrelated, miniscule budget reductions is beyond appalling; it’s outright shameful.

UPDATE – AP has more.  The public needs to be made aware of this.

Harry Reid makes jaw-droppingly crass and offensive statement as cheap political stunt? Say it ain’t so.

Xasprtr on March 19, 2013 at 4:12 PM

Wait, so Harry Reid voted for Marines to die? That IS sick!

Yep, Harry Reid is denouncing Harry Reid and doing it in an especially obnoxious way. There is something wrong with that guy.

forest on March 19, 2013 at 4:48 PM

I’m beginning to dislike this Reid person.

I know, right? “Barack Obama Implicated in Death of Seven Marines” sounds like a fine headline title to me!

mintycrys on March 19, 2013 at 5:01 PM

This guy is such a low life. You have to wonder how many in his own caucus roll their eyes at clueless comments like this.

This man scum is a despicable piece of crap.

Hill60 on March 19, 2013 at 6:04 PM

Does he always pray to his god like that on the Senate floor?

Marcola on March 19, 2013 at 6:07 PM

By the way, whatever happened to all the Earth shattering consequences of the sequester anyway? Weren’t we supposed to have a breakdown in civil society or something?

Mitoch55 on March 19, 2013 at 6:29 PM

This a-hole needs his effing skull cracked.

Guy- I enjoy your occasional posts here. Very concise:

“Dead Marines, you say? Why, this might be a fine opportunity for me to attack Republicans!”

Yup. What a bottom feeder.

Jackalope on March 19, 2013 at 10:20 PM

I’ll visit his gravesite one day, and celebrate appropriately. Marines far and wide would appreciate, but there won’t be video proof.

I’ll stand on his grave and do something worthy of his contributions….

Dirty kid-toucher.

steebo77 on March 20, 2013 at 4:14 AM

My question is why, when Reid fired off this vile vitriol, did not one Republican in the Senate, NOT ONE OF THEM, stand up and condemn what he just said?!!!!

If I had been in the public gallery and heard him say what he said, I would have loudly condemned the SOB right on the spot, at the risk of being removed by security, but I would have still condemned him regardless!

So where the hell were the Republicans in all of this? Where were you, McCain? Where were you, Lindsay?

Where were ANY of you?

pilamaye on March 20, 2013 at 8:07 AM

The senate Dems knew what they were doing, they picked a leader possibly more scummy than they are. Not easy.

arand on March 20, 2013 at 10:06 AM

Where is the outrage? Where is the lame stream media? Where is cable news on this? Where is the GOP/RNC? What an incredible travesty and a good indication of the state of the Republic.

ultracon on March 20, 2013 at 10:21 AM

Not only is this reprehensible, it doesn’t even make sense. It’s an unfortunate fact that a significant number of deaths, including these 7 Marines, occur during training. So fewer training exercise = fewer deaths during training exercise, not more. One could make the case that less training will eventually lead to more casualties in combat, or simply a less effective military, but that’s not what this cretin is saying.

“Dead Marines, you say? Why, this might be a fine opportunity for me to attack Republicans!”

Seriously? That’s your argument, after all this Benghazi crap?

Seriously? That’s your argument, after all this Benghazi crap?

triple on March 20, 2013 at 6:06 PM

Yeah, they are just the same, exact that:
(A) the administration had complete control over security at the Benghazi compound, as well as the (non) response once they learned that the compound was under seige
(B) the administration has repeatedly lied about the circumstances of the attack, the cause of the attack, the timeline of events, who within the administration had what responsibility, etc., etc.
(C) sequestration had absolutely nothing to do with the deaths of the Marines – it had zero effect on the training in which they died, and as I pointed out in my comment above, if sequestration were to reduce training if anything it would decrease, rather than increase, training related deaths
and
(D) notwithstanding (C), sequestration was proposed and signed by Pres. Obama, and could have possibly been averted if the Senate, which is led by Harry Reid, had passed a budget during the last 4 years.

So the events are only comparable when you strip out all of the facts.

triple on March 20, 2013 at 6:06 PM

crap?? the government’s repeated cover-ups of information and inconsistencies/lies when telling the american people about the attack is crap? no big deal, move along, nothing to see here? wow. you’ll do anything to deny the obvious: that the government’s handing of the benghazi attack made no sense and they are definitely being less than transparent… not that you care.
