Photo: When in Rome ….

… do as the Romans do! After missing each other a couple of times during the conclave, I finally got a chance to run into Catholic blogger Father Z, Fr. John Zuhlsdorf.  Fr. Z decided to take me in hand and show me around the Borgo Pio just outside the Vatican late this afternoon, teaching me the local customs after giving me an extended tour of the features of St. Peter’s Square.

After momentarily bumping into George Weigel, we started off at a small shop and had Crodinos, a bittersweet citrus apertif that matched perfectly with the potato chips that Fr. Z said are de rigueur with the drink. We then set off in search of a bakery that sold bigne de San Giuseppe, a pastry filled with yellow custard made especially for the Feast Day of St. Joseph, which was today.  Here are Father Z and me, enjoying this traditional Italian delight on its traditional day:

I’m sure going to miss Rome when I leave.

Will you be going around Rome on a bicycle putting up pictures of Rita Hayworth?

Ed, nice to see you’re working SO HARD! Don’t strain yourself there, buddy. 🙂

Ed I want to thank you for all of these stories from Rome. I read each one and looked forward to the next one. Reading these almost felt like we all had a personal family member writing letters to us back home. I am happy you got to experience this Ed it is too bad the First Mate couldn’t have joined you cause then it would have been perfect. Safe travels home.

You need to get back. The children have been playing while you were away.

Thank you very much for sharing your trip with us, Ed!

You really made it feel like your HotAir friends had a front row seat during this historic week!

Have a safe trip home.

Wow! That looks really good!

Have they ever tried to wrap the thing in bacon and deep fry it?

Would have loved to see the first mate with you and open a couple of doors for you in the Vatican. It is nice to see that HotAir has grown (for good or bad) that a commenters services are no longer needed.

That’s great Ed. Fr. Z introduced you to some food other than mediocre pizza. Rome has some great local food.

Okay, am I a sicko? I was hoping for a toga. At the very least, hoping to see him wearing a wreath around his head. 🙁

I have a question, Ed.

How is this allowed to happen over and over again?
