Photo of the day

It was evening before I left the Vatican press office, and even though I was bone-tired from the day, this made me stop and unpack my camera gear:

Very nice. Was the gelato stand to your right still there?

F15Mech on March 8, 2013 at 6:11 PM

Nice to see it without all the chairs and stanchions out front… it’s such a beautiful sight.

Hill60 on March 8, 2013 at 6:13 PM

Beautiful, Ed. Enjoy your trip.

portlandon on March 8, 2013 at 6:27 PM

Hey Ed, your photo of the Vatican links to your personal flickr account photos. Better lock it up.

portlandon on March 8, 2013 at 6:30 PM

Just Beautiful.

Awesome – thanks Ed

Is the building crooked like the tower or did you take your left shoe off before taking the picture? lol. It’s a very nice picture and thanks for sharing it with us.

Really cool, Ed.

Great photo, Ed! Well done!

Nothing wrong with gelato-ing your way around Italy. You walk it all off. :)

Blake on March 8, 2013 at 7:25 PM

Beautiful picture….you are very fortunate. I can’t wait to get there someday.

It is an approved way to get around Rome when you have little kids with you ;)

I think I have the exact same picture on my camera from a few years ago.

F15Mech on March 8, 2013 at 7:35 PM

I think I’ve stood exactly where you took that picture, Ed. I also went and climbed all the way to the cupola. Long walk, but worth it. Did you know there are gift shops on the roof, staffed by nuns? I’m not kidding.

Jeff Weimer on March 8, 2013 at 7:42 PM

I am not Catholic but for those of you who are and can go it has to be the thrill of a lifetime. God bless.

CW20 on March 8, 2013 at 7:48 PM

And yes that is an Egyptian Obelisk in the picture. Which was brought back during the Roman Empire. A cross was later added during the Roman conversion.

Once again Ed is spreading Vatican propaganda, this time on behalf of its tourism bureau. /libfreeordie ;-)

Very lovely picture. There are few things in this world as pretty as streetlights reflecting off wet cobblestone pavement at night.

Very nice EM. I am looking forward to the new Pontiff. We’ve had two in a row that have done very well. I think God has a plan and it takes time for us to understand his purpose. His is the long game and my personal hope is that what he started with his Holiness John Paul II and continued with his Holiness Benedict xvi.

I am extremely excited! Talk about March Madness!! Bring on the brackets!! ( I leave it to you to put it together I’m too lazy).

Ooooooh EdEdEd! someone up there mentioned gelato. Go to Old Bridge, it’s the best gelato I ever had in Rome. It’s, um, bear with me here, I suck at directions. I navigate by landmarks, so I always know where I’m going, but trying to tell others where to go can get… sticky. SO: leave St Peter’s square going towards Ottaviano metro station (north, I think). You go through this other square, kinda long and rectangular (they have this market thing there on sundays). Risorgimiento, I think. Old Bridge is kinda near the (as you approach ottaviano) far left corner of the square. usually with a huge line. There’s also a bakery a couple blocks past Ottaviano, good stuff (pastries of various kinds, huge sandwiches they sell by the slice…) open 24 hours, but I can’t for the life of me remember what it’s called. It’s on the left, and downstairs. There’s this little door with an awning and stairs going right down. 2 or 3 blocks past ottaviano, I think. hang on, I’ll see if I can find it on google maps.

Wow. Lovely! Lucky, lucky Ed.

Ladysmith CulchaVulcha on March 8, 2013 at 9:35 PM

I consider this another scoop, Ed! How often are you going to get a picture like that? Right place and right time!

Cindy Munford on March 8, 2013 at 9:41 PM

Awesome. But I thought MKH called dibs on Photo of the Day with the solar plasma flare?

I saw the decade in, when it seemed
The world could change at the blink of an eye
And if anything
Then there’s your sign… of the times

I was alive and I waited, waited
I was alive and I waited for this
Right here, right now
There is no other place I want to be
Right here, right now
Watching the world wake up from history
