Florida lawmaker: Why not require everyone purchasing ammo to take anger management courses?

posted at 3:03 pm on March 6, 2013 by

Yes, why don’t we use up even more of the state’s resources to force law-abiding citizens wishing to purchase ammunition to take preemptive anger-management courses? The brilliance is overwhelming me.

A Florida legislator wants anyone trying to buy ammunition to complete an anger management program first, in what critics say is the latest example of local lawmakers reaching for constitutionally-dubious solutions to the problem of gun violence.

The bill filed Saturday by state Sen. Audrey Gibson, D-Jacksonville, would require a three-day waiting period for the sale of any firearm and the sale of ammunition to anyone who has not completed anger management courses. The proposal would require ammo buyers to take the anger management courses every 10 years.

“This is not about guns,” Gibson said. “This is about ammunition and not only for the safety of the general community, but also for the safety of law enforcement.”

Will those wishing to exercise their First Amendment right to burn the American flag or tell the government to “Fv(k off!” also be required to attend anger management classes first?

How about making voters take literacy tests before they can vote, after all poll taxes and such have never been ruled unconstitutional or anything (sarc)?

Better idea: How about we mandate legislators attend constitutional history and law classes, along with INSANITY MANAGEMENT COURSES????

Given that more people are killed by cars, knives, baseball bats, and swimming pools – how about anger management and safety trining prior to buying any of those as well?

dentarthurdent on March 6, 2013 at 3:12 PM

Because the only thing they have to be angry about is their government limiting their 2nd Amendment right?

Snowblind on March 6, 2013 at 3:14 PM

Earlier in our illustrious state’s (CA) history before they went all out against guns, legislators and others got a waiting period put in place. Among the reasons was for a “cooling off” period. If one needs to cool off before purchasing a firearm they certainly could still go sideways after the 5-10 whatever days are up.

How about we require all elected officials to take an IQ test, a US history test and a test on the US Constitution before being allowed to run for office?

My answer involves a snarl, 7 letters in two words, and two raised middle fingers. Now, didn’t I manage my anger well?

GWB on March 6, 2013 at 3:35 PM

The very issue of anger management is why I buy and shoot ammunition.

OK, now this makes me angry.

A waiting period is actually quite a smart move. Really. It gives you time to lay out a solid plan on how cover up the crime or escape prosecution. If you just run out and buy a gun and ammo when you’re all pissed off, you’re more likely to use it in front of witnesses, get caught and have no alibi.

dentarthurdent on March 6, 2013 at 3:54 PM

Why don’t we ask everyone who uses a fork and knife to eat take anger management courses?

I am shocked that it is WOMEN, the most benefited from having access to guns for personal protection, the ones leading the way to disarm people.

How many bank robbers lay out a plan and then say on the way to the bank – oh ya, we need to stop at Walmart on the way to buy ammo; but oh darn, there’s a 3 day waiting period so I guess we can’t do it tonight….. bummer, well let’s go get some wings instead….. oh, darn, I gots no money – well now what?

dentarthurdent on March 6, 2013 at 5:01 PM

Patronizing prick.

What a bigot — apparently anyone who wants to buy ammunition has emotional problems in this person’s eyes. This whole gun-control thing is starting to look like snobbery against legal gun owners.

Ok, I’m willing to consider this. However, first let’s put in place a requirement that all candidates for office must take courses on the Constitution and Economics. Just for kicks, let’s throw in a “Budgeting For Dummies” class too…
