This is cool, especially the handstand, but what is the big frickin’ deal with half court shots? Is it an easy shot? No. Is it an impossible shot. No. With a little practice and no one defending you it’s easy to get good at.

That’s a new one…

Probably more attention then the school has ever gotten.

William Carey Univ. is a private Christian liberal arts college located in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in the United States, affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Mississippi Baptist Convention.

From their site:
Hattiesburg, Miss., February 22, 2013 – Ashlee Arnau of Hattiesburg, a cheerleader and soccer player at William Carey University, nailed the half-court shot/ soccer style flip throw in at halftime of the WCU’s men’s basketball final home game against SSAC rival Auburn-Montgomery. Ahslee has been trying to sink the amazing half-court shot at every home game since Christmas, and she finally sank the shot during her last chance of the season.

Does this make cheerleading a sport now?

Donald Draper on February 22, 2013 at 4:06 PM

My vote is for the one Wisconsin hit again Michigan a couple of weeks back at the buzzer.

alflauren on February 22, 2013 at 4:23 PM

So, um, did it count?

Because that would make cheerleaders useful. Have a half court shot competition with the cheerleaders at halftime, and count them. With, you know, multipliers for difficulty.

On a funny note, I took a somewhat clandestine missions trip one time, and we traveled under the auspices of WCU. I have no idea if the University had any idea their name was used. But really–it’s not particularly subtle to use the name of a very, very famous missionary if you’re trying to mask the fact that you’re missionaries. Then again, this was before the internet, so there’s that.

Nobody’s bellyaching because there’s no blog or Green Room entry about The Walking Dead?

I guess everybody’s working for the weekend.

Don’t like basketball. Is that three points?

Don’t like basketball. Is that three points?

InterestedObserver on February 22, 2013 at 5:20 PM

Actually, that is called an infield-fly. The term was adopted from baseball, oddly.

Whenever an offensive basketball player goes “heels-high,” that is his/her heels are higher than the standing shoulder height of said player, that player is said to have “gone upstate.” This gives the point-earning team the option of claiming an extra point making it a four point shot provided she was outside of the Florida Keys. If the team in fact declines the point bump they have the alternate option of having one member on the other team blindfolded for one minute of play.

The fact that a cheerleader performed this feat at half-time does not preclude the home team from earning four points or imposing a minute of blindfolded play.

Just remember “Florida Keys” and “infield fly.”

“Offensive basketball player” refers to a member of the team in possession of the ball. This applies to all areas of the arena. Thus a player or team is said to be “offensive” if they are in possession of b-balls anywhere on the arena’s property.

For this reason visiting teams often have a “bus-coach” who monitors all ball handling activity on the bus en route to the game. The Utah Jazz Hands are notorious for playing some serious offense. Once the arrived with nothing but a busload of basketballs and the a bus-coach.

“Offensive basketball player” alternatively refers to any player on the Boston Celtics (pronounced kel-ticks).

“Heels” refers to a body part not a style of shoe. That is unless it is a women’s team who are allowed to wear high-heels but only when being offensive and not on offense.

It’s a great game.

Don’t know if having competitions is enough to call it a sport, but modern cheerleaders are definitely athletes.

I lived in Hattiesburg in the ’80s. William Carey is a private college with very tough academic standards and an outstanding nursing program. My sister got her nursing degree there.
The emphasis is on academics, not athletics. Sports are kept in their proper perspective.
Ashlee has been doing this stunt for half time entertainment for some time, and this is the first time she made the basket during a game. She’s a minor local celebrity and people have been rooting for her to make it ever since she started making the attempt, so it’s kind of a big deal.
It’s ultimately meaningless fluff but fun, and part of the good memories of youth for the people involved.
Perspective people, perspective.

Dear Hot Air,
Can you please make your links look less terrible for sharing on Facebook? Conservatives are getting owned by people sharing links from (ugh) BuzzFeed, TPM, ThinkProgress, etc.

There’s an episode of Frasier in which Niles (David Hyde Pierce) makes a shot from halfcourt. It required, I believe, 37 takes and he threw the ball like a girl, but he made it!
