Green Room

And now, a word about the Republican Party from Barack Obama

posted at 5:27 pm on February 21, 2013 by

Politico’s headline says it all: “Obama: Helping rich only thing that ‘binds’ GOP together.”  Barack Obama, political analyst and unrivaled slayer of straw men:

President Obama, speaking to a very friendly Al Sharpton as part of a round with black broadcasters Thursday, offered a harsh assessment of the GOP — arguing that their opposition to taxing the wealthy was the only thing keeping an otherwise deeply divided party from falling apart.  Speaking about the looming sequester deadline, Obama said: “My sense is that their basic view is that nothing is important enough to raise taxes on wealthy individuals or corporations, and they would rather see [billions in sequester cuts to social programs]… That’s the thing that binds their party together at this point.”

Fairly characterizing his opponents’ positions and motives has never really been Obama’s thing, so this particularly uncharitable caricature comes as no surprise.   It doesn’t even merit a serious response, except to remind middle class voters that the GOP’s principled stance against anti-growth, job-killing tax hikes applies to all taxpayers – and that they, too, may soon find themselves rather appreciative of that zealous protection.  Parting thought: If our Postpartisan Prince feels compelled to pontificate about what — ahem — “really” unites conservatives, why don’t we return the favor in a similar spirit of fair-minded graciousness?  Fill in the blank: The only thing that binds Democrats together is _____________________.

On a serious note, only a radical ideologue would say what Obama has said and yet the media promotes him as a reasonable pragmatist.

Does that comment sound like it comes from a man who would be capable of negotiating in good faith with the opposing party or does it sound like it comes from someone who tells his opponents “I won” and “You get nothing”?

The only thing that binds the Democratic party together is helping the rich — either by giving them money, preventing anyone from challenging them, or just plain making them feel better about themselves.

The only thing that binds Democrats together is_____

covetousness.

Those separate groups of people who gather to vote for liberal policies are brought together by the desire to take what isn’t theirs. Those on the bottom (economically), want your success, your opportunity, and your material wealth- and are willing to vote for a government that would take it from you by force of law and give it to them. Those successful people who push for the same policies want to take from you your independence, personal accountability, self-reliance, and free-will. In both cases they feel you are allowed to have something that is inherently unfair (in their world view)- more stuff or personal sovereignty. And if they can successfully disarm you, don’t think they won’t try to take it all.

My sense is that their basic view is that nothing is important enough to raise taxes on wealthy individuals or corporations, and they would rather see [billions in sequester cuts to social programs]… That’s the thing that binds their party together at this point.

No, I can think of things that I would say justify some additional tax revenue. Like, say, if China declared war on us.

Other than that, though, he’s pretty much right. I’d much rather see billions in cuts to social programs than tax increases. In fact, I’d call billions in cuts to social programs merely “a good start.” Just saying…
