And now, a word about the Republican Party from Barack Obama

Politico’s headline says it all: “Obama: Helping rich only thing that ‘binds’ GOP together.” Barack Obama, political analyst and unrivaled slayer of straw men:
President Obama, speaking to a very friendly Al Sharpton as part of a round with black broadcasters Thursday, offered a harsh assessment of the GOP — arguing that their opposition to taxing the wealthy was the only thing keeping an otherwise deeply divided party from falling apart. Speaking about the looming sequester deadline, Obama said: “My sense is that their basic view is that nothing is important enough to raise taxes on wealthy individuals or corporations, and they would rather see [billions in sequester cuts to social programs]… That’s the thing that binds their party together at this point.”
Fairly characterizing his opponents’ positions and motives has never really been Obama’s thing, so this particularly uncharitable caricature comes as no surprise. It doesn’t even merit a serious response, except to remind middle class voters that the GOP’s principled stance against anti-growth, job-killing tax hikes applies to all taxpayers – and that they, too, may soon find themselves rather appreciative of that zealous protection. Parting thought: If our Postpartisan Prince feels compelled to pontificate about what — ahem — “really” unites conservatives, why don’t we return the favor in a similar spirit of fair-minded graciousness? Fill in the blank: The only thing that binds Democrats together is _____________________.
