The unintentional hilarity in Margaret Carlson’s scolding of Catholic bishops

posted at 11:16 am on February 6, 2013 by

This probably deserves a full-scale fisking, but I’m pressed for time today.  Margaret Carlson seems very annoyed at the priorities set by Catholic bishops in opposing a law that forces Catholics and other people of faith to violate their religious doctrine.  But, er, whose priorities exactly are out of whack here?

U.S. Catholic bishops have a lot to worry about: the gunning down of children; 11 million undocumented immigrants, many of them Catholic; a warming planet; a chilly economy. Instead they’ve spent the last year obsessed with contraception.

Shouldn’t the phrase “US Catholic bishops” be replaced by “Washington DC”?  After all, the Catholic Church doesn’t have the temporal power to solve the problems of immigration policy or “a chilly economy.”  Those issues are the purview of the state — on which the bishops can and actually do comment and propose solutions, regardless of Carlson’s ignorance of the rather easily-accessible USCCB website.

On the other hand, we have a President who spent all of last year insisting that women couldn’t access birth control without the government forcing employers to provide it for free, despite solid evidence from a 20-year study by the CDC that the issue of access was practically non-existent.  The same President won’t even acknowledge that the economy is “chilly” after four years of Obamanomics.  And it’s the bishops whose priorities are not in line?

Carlson goes on at length to argue that Obama fixed all of their concerns with the HHS mandate, which simply isn’t true, and in fact may have made things a little worse. Maybe Carlson should tell Obama to butt out of the free expression of religious faith, and spend more time on Carlson’s priorities instead.

Projection.

Hmmm. . . Margaret Carlson: Catholic educated, divorced “philandering” husband. I think what we got here is a bitter ex-Catholic with an axe to grind. After reading her columns, I think her husband should be congratulated on his escape.

Second collections for Global Warming?

The Anti-Catholic Catholics will be on board with that.

Just goes to show that sophisticated-looking glasses on an idiot still makes you an idiot.

Of course, Catholics will use contraception. They have been for decades.

Carlson suddenly realizes that individual Catholics actually violate Church teachings. There’s an app for that. It’s called Confession. Catholics also commit murders every now and then. Doesn’t mean the Bishops are required to endorse that, either.

Oy, the liberal/left always does this. They try to change settled policy and if YOU object to them YOU’RE the one obsessed with the issue or causing the controversy.

See? It’s not the Obama Administration that is causing this. Or them focusing on contraception instead of more important issues.

No, it’s the Bishops who oppose the new regulations that are at fault.

Amazing.

Thanks! I needed a good laugh today.

As a former Lutheran, converted to Catholicism 12 years ago, I greatly appreciate the Catholic Church but I do not hold the Bishop responsible for my sins or shortcomings. My Bishop and my Pastor show me the way. It is up to me whether or not I choose to follow.

WOW !!!
An outright acknowledgement that our government is NOT fixing the problem.
And then, THEN, a fallback on religion do do all the hard work.

Who is this lady ?

No, the MSM has spent the last year obsessed with the USCCB’s positions on only this one issue out of many they have opined on.

I am always amazed that these self important egoists jump in on subjects they little about.

Let’s see, she has a law degree and works for a leftist organ.

The Bishops represent an organization two thousand years old with thinkers such as Thomas Aquinus and Thomas More to name two of dozens.

She must have all the answers…..riiiight!

As a Catholic, I can tell you there are two kinds.

There are the “cafeteria Catholics”, otherwise known as “C&E’s”. Cafeteria Catholics choose only those pieces of doctrine they care to believe that doesn’t interfere with their other beliefs, usually liberal. “C&E’s” mean they attend church twice a year, Christmas and Easter.

Then there are the devout, who live their life with a Christian purpose, who are there for Cathechism for their kids, serve as Sponsors for Confirmation, and are committed to their faith and their connection to God. These are the ones that voted for Romney.

People bitter with their upbringing like Margaret “picklepuss” Carlson are easy to spot.

Their the ones who hate feeling guilty about anything.

Great twist of a phrase Ed. :)

Ah, yes … there’s that pesky Free Will thing again. Someone commented yesterday (don’t remember who) about the bishops originally championing Obamacare, then reversing course when they discovered Obama and HHS fully intend to violate all Catholics’ religious liberty with the contraception mandate. Yes, the bishops should have known better than to have been on Obama’s side on this. They were at best naive and at worst, assenting to a matter contrary to Church teachings, a grave matter any way you look at it, especially since they are the leaders of the Catholic Church in the United States. For some bishops, it was their choice to continue to support Obamacare and that makes them just as big a candidate for Confession as the rest of us Catholics who sin. It’s been immensely disappointing for us to witness, but at least now they are starting to take the threat to our (everyone’s) religious freedoms seriously.

PatriotGal2257 on February 6, 2013 at 11:10 PM

Margaret Carson learned everything she knows by shouting inanities over Mark Shields, Pat Buchanan, Mona Charen and Al Hunt on the CNN talk show The Capital Gang.

She’s now defending the right of the other capital gang to violate the religious freedom of Americans (that they don’t care about).
