I’d also like to add that if you supported any of the candidates who threw away gimme elections in red states in the last two cycles, you have no place to talk.

KingGold on January 25, 2013 at 4:04 PM

Let's see the list of lost "gimme" elections:

Ted Stevens vs. Mark Begich, AK 2008
Sharron Angle vs. Harry Reid, NV 2010
Christine O'Donnell vs. Chris Coons, DE 2010
Todd Akin vs. Claire McCaskill, MO 2012
Richard Mourdock vs. Donelly, IN 2012
Berg vs. Heidi Heitkamp, ND 2012
Rehberg vs. Jon Tester, MT 2012

That makes 7 "gimme" Senate elections lost to Democrats within the last 6 years. If we had won those 7 elections, we would now have 52 Republican Senators and a majority, and UpChuck Schumer would be Senate Minority Leader, vigorously defending his right to filibuster.

We can't blame Obama for the 4 Senate seats mentioned above for 2012, because Romney carried all of them.

We need to stop running "outsider" candidates and businessmen in Senate races, because they make beginner's blunders in campaigns. We need to run experienced candidates who have already shown they can win, such as former Governors, State Attorneys General, other State officeholders, or eventually House members.

Republicans who WON tough Senate races in 2010:
Former Rep. Pat Toomey in PA
Former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio in FL
Rand Paul in KY (son of Rep. Ron Paul)
Former Gov. John Hoeven in ND
Former Rep. and State Secretary of State Roy Blunt in MO

All of these had already shown they could win elections prior to running for Senate, where the stakes are much higher, since a Senator holds office for 6 years, and is one of only two Senators for each state.

Yes, Brown lost to Warren by 7.5 percentage points. But meanwhile, Romney lost to Obama by 23 percentage points in Massachusetts. Brown was one of the few Republican Senate candidates who ran ahead of Romney in 2012.

I suppose that instead of Brown, the MA GOP could nominate one of the other Republicans who have served in Congress from Massachusetts in the last 15 years ... oh, wait, there aren't any others.

He lost to Fauxahauntus for crying out loud. Maybe this time around he’ll lose in a squeaker. Or maybe he is great at place holding for two years until they find a dip bigger than him.

arnold ziffel on January 25, 2013 at 3:58 PM

He lost in a deep blue state, with Obama at the top of the ticket, in a base-turnout election, against an activist with close connections to both President Obama and the liberal base. By all rights, he shouldn't even have come as close as he did.

He's a hell of a lot better politician than you give him credit for. And he should win this particular special election easily - if, of course, he runs. And then, when 2014 rolls around, with no Obama at the top of the ticket, he will have secured a Senate seat in blue territory until the end of the decade.

I'd also like to add that if you supported any of the candidates who threw away gimme elections in red states in the last two cycles, you have no place to talk.
