Is James Franco’s loopy Obama poem better than the Inauguration poem?

Moving:

I met Obama once, in D.C., the Correspondents’ Dinner.
I was the guest of Vanity Fair, guided through D.C. by the wife
Of Christopher Hitchens, when he was alive. We went to Hitch’s place,
He had books from floor to ceiling, and said he had read

To Borges, when he was blind, Old Icelandic Eddas—
Then we waited in a private room with the likes of Tom Cruise,
And Katie Holmes, and Claire Danes. When Obama entered
The crowd converged. Finally, I got to shake his hand,

He knew me from Spider-Man.

Richard Blanco’s “One Today.” I actually thought it had a few nice moments and was at least accessible, but maybe a tad too literal.

James Franco’s poem seems fairly accessible too.

Should I ever be elected to public office, remind me to choose a well-vetted, classic poem that has withstood the test of time (should I be forced to have a poetry reading at all). That seems safest.

Of course, if I decided to go a riskier route, I’d go all in on someone that had won multiple poetry slams. At least then I’d know the poem would come with a performance.

Franco is rumored to be a…[gasp]…conservative.

IN sandy silence, all alone,
Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws
The only shadow that the Desert knows:—
“I am the great OBAMA,” saith the stone,
“The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
“The wonders of my hand.”— The City’s gone,—
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.

We wonder,—and some Hunter may express
Wonder like ours, when thro’ the wilderness
Where London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,
He meets some fragment huge, and stops to guess
What powerful but unrecorded race
Once dwelt in that annihilated place.

Franco should have won best actor for his interpretation of a prince (not to mention his epic accent) in “Your Highness” with Danny McBride.
