<blockquote>Did not know Belichick’s job was to play defense for the other team. To quote Herm: “You play to win the game…hello!” Only losers whine about running up the score. If your team did it you would be excusing it no doubt.

Going for it on 4th & 1 is indicative of what, exactly? He made a decision. Had it worked he be praised for his balls. It didn’t so he is second guessed. Their defense was swiss-f’ing-cheese that game by the way. I know YOU would have come up with the perfect call/play for that situation though.

Randy Moss pushed off on all his TD’s? He is the only NFL WR to ever push off? You’ve NEVER seen that before in the NFL. Never? Really? You really sound ridiculous here.

OMG, Brady thought the NFL’s all-time scoring offense would score more than 17 points? The Horror! Even if he did not believe that, what would you have him say – I think the Giants (your hate for Joe Montana and the Patriots plus your use of “gmen” gives your fan allegiance away, btw)will kick our ass and we’ll be lucky to score twice? The reason the giants boasting about stomping them out isn’t seen as bragging is that they did it, and kudos to them for it. Had NE racked up 35 points and win, they would be historically seen as bragadocious clowns. They won and deserved to.

Spygate? Inexcusable and wrong. Should have been more of a penalty IMO.

Who had Giselle speak for Brady? Do you think Belichick or Bob Kraft appointed her Director of Media Relations for the Patriots? They shoved a camera in her face and she did the wife things defending her guy? I would expect my wife to do the same and owuld do the same for her. Again, you sound ridiculous.

Belichick refused to speak to the media after? Again, the horror. He could take a warm pee on the media for all I care. He was gracious to John Harbaugh after the game at handshake – that is all that I think really matters. The media gonna write what they gonna write anyway and he has ALWAYS worked to never give them anything. Is that how I would have (and have) handled it? No, but he’ll do him and I will do me. Either way, I don’t think he really cares what you think of his decision not to speak to them.

Typical thin-skinned NE fan. Can't take any criticism of the Patsies.

As for going for it on 4th and 1: I wasn't talking about that game in Indy where they got stuffed: I was talking about how all year long in their undefeated regular season how they always went for it on fourth down even when being up by 30. That was pathetic and classless. I don't remember any other NFL teams doing that. It's a shame no one clipped Brady's knee as that's what I would've done when a team is trying to embarrass you like that.

And I'm not a Giants fan - I'm a Peyton Manning fan - which now makes me a Broncos fan. Peyton is the best QB ever and a conservative unlike your GQ boy Brady from Cali.

You see though, class is only something you can attend never something you can acquire. What's with all the excuses? Ever seen Peyton's wife making excuses for him? And it's not like Brady ever takes much critcism anyways. Despite throwing a bad pass behind Welker in last years superbowl it was Welker who took all the heat while Brady let it happen and refused to speak up for his teammate.

Again, making excuses for belicheat?? It's part of his job to be accountabe and talk to the media after wins AND losses. I know you think your beloved cheating coach should be above having to address the media so us little peons can hear what he has to say.

The only thing you got why is Spygate, they should've been punished more. Not a coincidence that Uggs and Belicheat haven't won anything after they turned off the cameras.

Hey Devil Boy:

Your use of over the top childish insults just shows how you've lost the argument and got nothing else to make your arguement.

Basically all you're saying is that Montana won more so he's the best no matter what.

And yes QB is the most important position, but as I've pointed out many times the 10 others guys on the field have a major effect on the QB. The quality of the defense and special teams have major and sometimes greater affects on the outcome of the game and are directly out of control of the QB himself.

This is unlike basketball which is the sport where it's alot easier to evaluate the greatness of a player based on rings. The reason is you're on the court all the time with just 4 other guys for both defense and offense.

See the difference?

Stay classy.

<blockquote><blockquote>One more thing Devil Boy:

Since you mentioned college football:

Once again Joey played on Notre Dame back when they were a great team.

Peyton played in Tenneessee. Hmmmm where’s it tougher to win? Who had more help?

Just like in his NFL career, Joey had a stacked deck.

Joey and Tammy Brady are the perfect combo.

They are the two most overrated QB’s in history. Both played on great all around teams when they won and get all the credit and none of the blame!

I’ll be back later this evening to destroy your arguments once again. </blockquote>
You’re welcome.

<em>Stackd deck?...lol..Tennessee won AFTER Manning left. BTW, stupid, the OB position IS the most important position oin any team. You cannot win without a good one. And, in particular you cannot win successive championships without a great one like Montana.

<blockquote>Who cares about the National Championship. Plenty of guys have won in college and been busts in the NFL. Winning at that level is not anywhere near doing in the NFL. And it’s not like he did it all on his own there either.

<em>OK Shytehead.

Montana- 4 SB's, 4 MVP's
MAnning- One SB and one MVP

Momtana was no bust in the NFL. But, he has done FAR more than Manning in fewer seasons. And dOuchebag, football like hockey is a team sport. I guess you don't know jack shyte about football.

Fact is yuou don't know ANYTHING about ANYTHING to forget you pompous shyte stain. I stand by my cooments about yur abilities to argue, which is to say non-existent.</em> <blockquote>

Quick research shows during Joe Montana’s 4 eligible ND years, they were a combined 38-9. Peyon’s Tennessee teams were a combined 41-9. Joe did win one national title. Tennessee won the year after Peyton left…but was ranked number one wihtout a title one of his years. Different eras, so it’s all relative.

<em>I guess that makes you a loser, Levin. Manning was worse than Montana in college, too...lol...This argument is simple. You're a know nothing a$$hole !Your arguments are laughable if not outright moronic.</em>

If what she says is accurate, it's accurate.

Of course, that doesn't change the fact that her motivation was likely sour grapes. I'm guessing if the same guy played for the Pats she wouldn't be pooh-poohing Pats' wins by pointing out that some of the players are thugs.

BTW, am I the only one that thought the guy was at least a cut above most NFL players because he has 6 kids with 4 WIVES instead of 6 kids with 4 BABY MOMMAS? Sure, it's a slim distinction, but, at least he was marrying them and providing them with a legal status rather than just sleeping around with them. On the other hand, since all I know about this guy is contained in the post that I just read above, that might have been a typo.

In any case, unless you want to idolize their sports ability, it's probably hard to find a professional sports player you'll want your kid emulating.

You mean like running up the score, scoring 60 pts a game in 2007? 4th and 1? Go for it, have Moss push off in the end zone for yet another TD. I’ve never seen anything like that in the NFL!

Not sure. Quick research shows during Joe Montana's 4 eligible ND years, they were a combined 38-9. Peyon's Tennessee teams were a combined 41-9. Joe did win one national title. Tennessee won the year after Peyton left...but was ranked number one wihtout a title one of his years. Different eras, so it's all relative.

Sure it’s sour grapes and all that (Pats fan here) but their wins and losses don’t affect my life so I have perspective. Interesting contrast between how the Patriots handle themselves after wins like last year’s AFC Championship…they praise the Ravens as a good team and stay low key. This year? The Ravens spout off about how the Pats are “arrogant” etc etc. You ever see a consistent winner that didn’t have swagger or feel better than everyone else? Stay classy, Baltimore.

Total Patriot homer and I love what Tom Brady has done to transform the laughingstock that was the Partiots of my youth…but he is not even close to Joe Montana. He’s on that short list, but not the GOAT.

You mean like running up the score, scoring 60 pts a game in 2007? 4th and 1? Go for it, have Moss push off in the end zone for yet another TD. I've never seen anything like that in the NFL!

Before the 2007 Superbowl Burress said the Gmen would win 21-17. The arrogant Brady said "he thinks we're only going to score 17 points?" No, you scored 14 ahole!!

One weekend, let's see it last. The league has been a joke for a long time. It has all star games in the middle of the week. Turn on Sportscenter and you'll see the first 40 min of basketball highlights (from the 2nd round of the playoffs) and in the last 20 min or so you'll get a few Stanley Cup highlights if you're lucky.

And since you mentioned Buffalo:

All year long having your foot in the crease was NO GOAL. THen durning game 6 of the FInals Brett Hull has his foot in the crease on the game winning goal and that coward Bettman refused to make everyone get off the ice.

The NFL had a labor dispute but got it done without missing any games. THe NHL cut their season in half. Show me some long term attendance over this entire season before you brag about numbers from ONE WEEKEND!

Let's call this one discount triple slam!!

<blockquote>He won two without the afore mentioned players. He also was performiong the championswhip act at Notre Dame in his junior year.. Oh, and while Rice was the GOAT, I doubt he did more for Montanas passing game than the combined talent of Harrison, Wayne, Clark, Edge. A combo which would beat anything Montana managed to share a huddle with.

Faulting a great quarter back for doing his job well is a laughable argument on your part. Montana was at his best in the clutch and he is the greatest for his performances as his FOUR SB rings attest AND MVP’s. Manning has a lot of catching up to do.

BTW, I didn’t say that Manning isn’t an excellent HOF caliber QB. He’s just no Joe Montana.

And the comeback game of all time wasn’t Manning or Montana it was Frank Reich in the ’93 Oilers v Bills game.January 3, 1993 – Things looked bleak for the Buffalo Bills in their Wild Card game against the Houston Oilers in Rich Stadium. The Oilers had built a 35-3 with a minute and 41 seconds gone by in the second half. But that set the stage for the greatest comeback of all time in football! Frank Reich, starting in place of injured quarterback Jim Kelly, pulled out the rabbit from his magic hat and performed a miracle.

This game had to be the wildest Wild Card game of them all. It took the miraculous comeback by the Bills and overtime for Bills fans to savor one of the highest points in Buffalo sports history. A total of 75,141 fans turned out for the game and many of them began to leave at halftime. Even more joined the mass exodus when Houston scored early in the second half. But when the Bills started their fabled comeback, many of those who left tried in vain to return, only to be stopped by ticket takers.

The Bills won the game on a Steve Christie field goal from 32 yards out with 3 minutes gone by in the overtime. That ended the wildest of games with Buffalo winning 41-38. But that was almost anti-climatic compared to the fabulous COMEBACK. To overcome the huge odds stacked against the Bills and to keep on chipping away at the Houston lead was incredible indeed.

I see football stats aren’t a strength for you. Maybe tiddlywinks would be a better fit for you.

Next!

</blockquote>

Who cares about the National Championship. Plenty of guys have won in college and been busts in the NFL. Winning at that level is not anywhere near doing in the NFL. And it's not like he did it all on his own there either.

I'd take Rice, John Taylor, Brent Jones over Peyton's WR's in Indy anyday of the week and twice on Sunday. Harrison was great but he was no Rice, not even close. Wayne was pretty good despite getting shutdown in for no catches in the playoffs by Darrell Revis. Imagine if Peyton laid an egg, he'd get all the blame, yet the great Wayne got a pass.

As for the rest of the receiving options in Indy: Peyton made Clark, Collie, Garcon, etc. He demanded greatness from these guys. In his last year in Indy, he led them to 4 straight wins to win yet another div. title with the likes of the Blair WHite Project, Jacob Tamme, and Garcon. He also had NO running game at all as Joseph Addai missed most of the year. Let me know about when Montana didn't have a running game.

And I was AT that Bills game, you don't need to tell me anything about that. That's way I said Peyton led the best AFC CHAMP GAME comeback in history. See the difference: Champ game vs. Wild card game?

You're not very good at reading comprehension are you?

In his 14th year Montana went to KC. He put up good stats, but nowhere near what Peyton did this year in Denver with 4700 yards and 37 TD's. Montana only threw for more than 30 TD's once (a high of 31) and never had more than 4000 yards passing. This is despite playing on an All Pro team every year. And the major thing you missed in comparing the skill players is you overlooked the offensive lines: Montana's was far better and he had a much more balanced offense with Roger Craig. PLus the Niners defense was a great defense unlike the finesse defense the Colts had.

The Colts defense looked really good when Freeney and Mathis could just rush the passer after Peyton gave them a big lead. However if it was close and you tried to run it down their throats, they couldn't stop anyone. Same exact thing with the Broncos this year: just see what happened in the playoffs.

Finally, the amazing year Peyton had this year was despite coming back from FOUR neck surgeries. Many thought he should never even play again. Despite all that Peyton learned a new system, adjusted to new coaches, and players to have another MVP year. And he's STILL rehabbing as his nerves are still regenerating, his arm will be stronger next year.

He won two without the afore mentioned players.

Who cares about the National Championship. Plenty of guys have won in college and been busts in the NFL. Winning at that level is not anywhere near doing in the NFL. And it’s not like he did it all on his own there either.

I’d take Rice, John Taylor, Brent Jones over Peyton’s WR’s in Indy anyday of the week and twice on Sunday. Harrison was great but he was no Rice, not even close. Wayne was pretty good despite getting shutdown in for no catches in the playoffs by Darrell Revis. Imagine if Peyton laid an egg, he’d get all the blame, yet the great Wayne got a pass.

Let me know about when Montana didn’t have a running game.

And I was AT that Bills game, you don’t need to tell me anything about that. That’s way I said Peyton led the best AFC CHAMP GAME comeback in history. See the difference: Champ game vs. Wild card game?

You’re not very good at reading comprehension are you?

In his 14th year Montana went to KC. He put up good stats, but nowhere near what Peyton did this year in Denver with 4700 yards and 37 TD’s. Montana only threw for more than 30 TD’s once (a high of 31) and never had more than 4000 yards passing. This is despite playing on an All Pro team every year. And the major thing you missed in comparing the skill players is you overlooked the offensive lines: Montana’s was far better and he had a much more balanced offense with Roger Craig. PLus the Niners defense was a great defense unlike the finesse defense the Colts had.

The Colts defense looked really good when Freeney and Mathis could just rush the passer after Peyton gave them a big lead. However if it was close and you tried to run it down their throats, they couldn’t stop anyone. Same exact thing with the Broncos this year: just see what happened in the playoffs.

That being said…I think Elway, Brady, and Bradshaw are overrated – Jim Brown, too!

All you had to do is watch the game to see how much more talented that Barry was than Emmitt.

Emmitt wasn't even close to having the moves Barry held. Plus Emmitt had the much better line and a HOF QB to keep the defense honest.

You're right on two out of those three. Brady and Bradshaw are both overrate. Not Elway though. I"m more impressed with Elway losing 3 superbowls than the 2 he won as the 3 that he lost: he took 3 bad teams there, those teams had no one. Elway also had one of the strongest arms in the game and had mobility.

<blockquote>You based his greatness on ONE game ?…Here’s the straight schiznizzle….

Joe Montana is the G.O.A.T.(Greatest of All Time) and not Peyton Manning? Because Joe Montana was beyond great in the post-season and straight freakin’ LEGENDARY in Superbowls. Any REAL football fan knows that POSTSEASON > REGULAR SEASON. Peyton on the other hand has been known to under-perform in the post-season. Even in the only superbowl he won (in which they gifted him the MVP) he posted up a rather average QB rating of 81.7. I can’t think of anything great Peyton Manning has ever done in the postseason…Montana on the other hand…

Peyton Manning PostSeason
Playoff QB Rating: 87.4
Superbowl QB Rating: 83.5

Joe Montana PostSeason
Playoff QB Rating: 95.6
Superbowl QB Rating: 127.8

And don't use QB rating as your be all end all stat. Alex Smith was in the top 5 in QB rating this year, do you really consider him to be one of the best?

You can't think of anything great Peyton's done in the postseason? Seriously? You obviously forgot the best comeback in AFC Champ history. The colts were down 21-6 at half to the Patsies, Peyton led the great comeback to get the COlts to their first Superbowl.

Again Montana played on a all pro team every year? You really think Marino couldn't have won with that team? After Montana left Steve Young came in and won it all with the Niners.

<blockquote>This is the problem – there have been at least 20 quarterbacks who, if taken in the context of the game when they played, were major factors on how the game is played today.
<strong>
I think the trouble with the idea of “any ONE being the greatest ever” is it misses the bigger picture of how the game evolved.</strong>

It’s probably better as a timeline that highlights the players, coaches and owners who have had the greatest influence on the game.

My pics have personal, subjective aspects unrelated to just the stats – it doesn’t make them right, it just makes them the folks I would choose.</strong>

Like I said in my post just a minute ago, better to do a timeline that highlights the players, coaches and owners who have had the greatest influence on the game.

I think that would give everyone a better feel for the game.

PolAgnostic on January 22, 2013 at 4:24 AM</blockquote>I agree with your approach.

I used to debate with a good friend back in '90s about Emmitt Smith vs. Barry Sanders - he thought Emmitt was better, I didn't. I never thought to say to him, "You idiot - you're wrong!" even though it was obvious to <em>me</em> that if they had switched teams, Barry's stats would have been more impressive, and Emmitt's worse.

That being said...I think Elway, Brady, and Bradshaw are overrated - Jim Brown, too! :)

<em>AND......................

Peyton Manning's regular season stats (as well as others) have been inflated due to recent rule changes that limit the way cornerbacks can contact WRs. Before the rule change (which went into effect in 2004) Peyton's career QB rating was 88.1. As soon as the rule changed Peyton threw for 49 touchdowns.

But anyway...

Joe Montana: 4 superbowls, 11 SB TDs, no SB INTs
Peyton Manning: 1-1 in superbowls.

I'll take a postseason great over a regular season great anyday. And BTW, I am neither a Niners nor Chiefs fan. I just know real greatness when I see it.

Just sayin'.... :->

<em>You based his greatness on ONE game ?...Here's the straight schiznizzle....

Joe Montana is the G.O.A.T.(Greatest of All Time) and not Peyton Manning? Because Joe Montana was beyond great in the post-season and straight freakin' LEGENDARY in Superbowls. Any REAL football fan knows that POSTSEASON > REGULAR SEASON. Peyton on the other hand has been known to under-perform in the post-season. Even in the only superbowl he won (in which they gifted him the MVP) he posted up a rather average QB rating of 81.7. I can't think of anything great Peyton Manning has ever done in the postseason...Montana on the other hand...

Peyton Manning PostSeason
Playoff QB Rating: 87.4
Superbowl QB Rating: 83.5

Joe Montana PostSeason
Playoff QB Rating: 95.6
Superbowl QB Rating: 127.8

</blockquote>Well, with a caveat it won’t be just 5 and these are based on being older than some forms of dirt …

1. Montana – he was the type of quarterback who made the team better than the sum of its parts and never lost a Superbowl. He was a great competitor and made some passes to Jerry Rice I can still replay in my mind.

2. Fran Tarkenton – From the ‘Stone Age” – After 17 seasons, he owned every QB record when he retired. He was the original “mobile quarterback” and certainly the only one with such a long career.

3. Brett Favre – you are right, NY seems to bring out the douche in players but the length of his career, his consecutive games played, the list goes on and on … and some of his records may never be broken.

4. Brady – He is an exceptional quarterback with regard to how the game is played today. Manning may have the better technical skills by a bit, but Brady has the track record of delivering wins during and after the season.

5. Manning – he took a second rate football town and team and turned them all into winners. Indianapolis was a “rust belt” ghost town before he came and he turned it into something far better by winning – not a lot of quarterbacks have that on their resume. He also is one of the three best “thinking quarterbacks” (i.e. someone who visualizes almost every aspect of every play before the footbal gets hiked)

6. Bradshaw – the last of the 1930′s type players … except he played in the 1970′s. Superbowl wins, a dynasty team and the last quarterback I can think of who seemed to enjoy almost every single second of playing the game.

7. Marino – Not as good a quarterback as Elway but, for my money, always more exciting to watch than Elway because of his passing. If were a team owner, I’d go with Marino because he was the epitome of the skills required for his time.

8. Elway – He doesn’t get the attention he deserves because he went to and stayed with Denver. In another city, with a stronger owner/front office to put the right coaches and players on the field – he might have ended up the BEST of all time – but we’ll never know.

By the way, I HATED the Steelers during the Bradshaw / “Steel Curtain” years … but I always tended to watch their games.

<blockquote>

I live in New England and hate Brady and the Pats. I’ve had numerous arguments about Peyton vs Brady. The most common reason people give for Brady being better is that he’s had more postseason success. I don’t buy that as Brady’s been on better team. When he won 3 SB’s, he had a great defense and a great kicker making game winning SB kicks. He also had maybe the best coach and overall defensive scheme guy in Belicheat.

Peyton’s teams always had a finesse defense built to rush the passer after he gave them a big lead.

As to why you ranked Brady ahead of Peyton: you seemed to mainly do so based on postseason success right? If so then wouldn’t Brady have to be ahead of Faver (3 rings vs. 1)?

If Favre is ahead of Brady due to his records, then Peyton should be as well since he was on pace to break just about all of Favre’s records (except for INT’s) before missing the 2011 season – and he actually may still break most of them.

Also let’s consider that when Brady got hurt the Pats still won 11 games with Matt Cassell who just got benched by the Chiefs for Brady Quinn. When Peyton missed 2011 season, the Colts only won 2 games. That just goes to show how much was on Peyton’s shoulders and what great overall talent and offensive system the Pats have.

Finally, how many QB“s can rehab from 4 neck surgeries, and have the MVP Peyton did in his first year in Denver. This is while still rehabbing all year and learning a new playbook, adjusting to new players and coaches.

Overall your list is pretty good, but I’d say Bradshaw is too high. A few of his SB’s, he wasn’t that much of a factor. He was for the last two, not the first two. He played on a really great team but I don’t think he’s of the same caliber of Marino or Elway.

<blockquote>PolAgnostic on January 22, 2013 at 3:08 AM</blockquote>A few I think deserve at least honorable mention: Otto Graham, Johnny Unitas, Sonny Jurgensen, Roger Staubach, Dan Fouts, and Kurt Warner.

I often think Marino was underrated - imagine what he might have done in SF under Walsh. Or, what about Favre's career, if he had had a coach who knew how to help him cut down on his stupid interceptions, as it seems he had in his year in MN.

Greg Cook was a QB who was with Cincinnati while Walsh was a coach there, but got injured during his first year, ruining his career. His numbers as a rookie look like they came from a video game! I know Walsh said he thought if they had been able to work together under normal circumstances, Cook would have set records that never would have been broken.

<blockquote>What’s your top five list?

LevinFan on January 22, 2013 at 2:22 AM </blockquote>
<em>.
Well, with a caveat it won't be just 5 and these are based on being older than some forms of dirt ...</em>

1. Montana - he was the type of quarterback who made the team better than the sum of its parts and never lost a Superbowl. He was a great competitor and made some passes to Jerry Rice I can still replay in my mind.

2. Fran Tarkenton - From the 'Stone Age" - After 17 seasons, he owned every QB record when he retired. He was the original "mobile quarterback" and certainly the only one with such a long career.

3. Brett Favre - you are right, NY seems to bring out the douche in players but the length of his career, his consecutive games played, the list goes on and on ... and some of his records may never be broken.

4. Brady - He is an exceptional quarterback with regard to how the game is played today. Manning may have the better technical skills by a bit, but Brady has the track record of delivering wins during and after the season.

5. Manning - he took a second rate football town and team and turned them all into winners. Indianapolis was a "rust belt" ghost town before he came and he turned it into something far better by winning - not a lot of quarterbacks have that on their resume. He also is one of the three best "thinking quarterbacks" (i.e. someone who visualizes almost every aspect of every play before the footbal gets hiked)

6. Bradshaw - the last of the 1930's type players ... except he played in the 1970's. Superbowl wins, a dynasty team and the last quarterback I can think of who seemed to enjoy <strong>almost every single second of playing the game</strong>.

<blockquote>How do I know what Peyton would say?

You should be a little ashamed of that statement since you view him as the “all time greatest QB”.<blockquote>

I don't see the connection of why I should be ashamed. None of us can say for sure what someone else would say about a subject, we can only assume or speculate.

</blockquote>Is there any of those players who was EVER ANYTHING other than a classy guy before, during and after their career?

When you are someone who is on EVERYONE’S “All Time Greats” list – you’ve learned you can ALWAYS be generous when talking about others in the game.

FYI, I’d shuffle your list and add some more – but that’s true for everyone. In my case, I’ve been watching the game for a lot of years … all the back to when Lombardi was coaching … so I would add some QB’s from the ‘Stone Age’.

I'd say Favre turned out to be not so classy. I was disappointed in him to learn of the text images of his junk he sent out to the Jets girl. Especially since he and his wife were high school sweethearts, she fought breast cancer, I lose respect for him that he cheated on her.

I'm still a big Favre fan for his on the field talents, but it just shows that they're not all saints.

Peyton has always seemed to be all class... and he's conservative :)
