Sorry it took so long to get back. Right after writing that yesterday, I went to …. a gun show in a nearby city and spent the day there. By the way, no bulk packs [>20 rounds] 5.56, limited bulk 7.62, mags absurdly expensive but I got what I needed at twice what they used to cost [and only because I concentrated on shopping amongst the vendors, some were 7 times what they used to be, and that is for surplus, new being higher], NO .22 LR bricks. Show crowded. Mood seemed … fatalistic, and people were not buying as many firearms as they were concentrating on the care and feeding of what they had. Reloading supplies limited and getting more expensive.

As far as whether the ammunition sold is being fired or stored; both. I and my friends have spent more time on the range in the last couple of months than in the year before, and the .22 is wanted because we are training new shooters. And we are building up our personal supplies.

Speaking on the Walmart question, the local Sporting Goods manager is used to seeing me there; and the way they do it is that they have to order via computer every day. The system tells them if there is anything in the warehouse for that item, and lets them know if they can expect it overnight/the next morning. They cannot have a standing order in the system, so they have to re-order daily. On a good day, they get maybe a case or two of one or two calibers. The ammo counter opens at 0700. To a line of people. By 0900 or so at the very latest, it is gone. Repeat daily.

With the information at that link, you should be able to trace down far more information such as legal filings. Keep in mind that not only did the customers lose out on that deal, while they were on hold thinking that they had locked in a purchase, the price of EBR’s went up drastically.

$5.17/20-rd. box, not too bad, considering.

Ammo and firearms manufacturers do NOT dictate terms to a buyer like Walmart. They either refuse to cut the deal or they do as well as they can.

People don’t realize how truly small the firearms industry is. In relation to Walmart they are miniscule – and yes that includes the ‘big’ names. In years gone by after atrocities several of them (Ruger comes to mind) were looking at bankruptcy due to nuisance suits.

Still waiting for the Walmart press release saying they won’t sell ammo. Guess I should call HQ myself.

I reload and gun owners who are fearful of a shortage of certain kinds of ammo ought to buy some reloading equipment and learn how to use it.

Try your nearest Sportsman’s Warehouse. They have a company wide policy now of a 3 box limit per purchase – so they actually have a pretty good stock of most ammo – including .223/5.56.

I’d guess you’re one of those hoarders doing the “mine mine all mine” bit – or a price gouger ripping off people at gun shows.
And no – in my opinion that’s NOT free market.
But if anyone is dumb enough to pay those prices, too bad for them. I’ve found other sources for myself who still charge reasonable prices – people who actually want long term customers.

Do we really know who’s buying it all up?…..

He ends up having to talk to someone in Bentonville to explain that he hasn’t sold any because the Walmart warehouse hasn’t had any.

Computer ordering systems are not…quite perfected.

I also called the local Dick’s and spoke with a manger. Politely advised him I was cutting my customer card in pieces and no longer shopping there. Just making a point.

If I remember correctly, you’re in the Richmond, VA area? In which Wally World did you see all the ammo? There wasn’t any at the Short Pump location a few days ago.

I bought the last 4 boxes of .22 short ammo at a Maryland Walmart two days ago. The cashier at the sporting goods section, when ringing it up, asked me if it was for a handgun. I asked her why she was asking, and she replied that it was required to complete the purchase. If she did not key the answer into the register, it would not allow the transaction to continue. I answered “no,” and she had to enter “no” each of four times, once for each box. She knew nothing about the reason for the required question and answer. I’ll find the store manager and ask when I go back. Anyone have any ideas?

By the way, there was absolutely no other ammo there but shotgun shells, a couple of boxes of .22 LR and one box of 50 .380 FMJs at $38 a box!

It’s true that a recent run on ammo sales have left some retailers short on stock, but that will rectify itself when the buying spree slows down.

Never seen anything like it…Having a friend bring me a couple of boxes of 9mm back from up in the local mountains….he called me when he stumbled across a local retailer with stock….not sure how many rounds he bought, but I’m sure he put a dent in their inventory.

It doesn’t seem to be slowing down in L.A. county.

But WallyWorld hasn’t stopped stocking ammo I bet. Just as Bushmaster didn’t stop the presses.

This is a capacity issue as it was in 08-09.

I do feel sorry for the suckers who are buying 223 from Cheaper than Dirt at 500% above market price. I get it, but it is sad. Barky has put you in chains.

Those people tend to know when the supply comes in (friends of workers at local stores).

I went to my local one today after lunch. They’re very low and still stocking.

So I want to know who this “Walmart HQ” guy is. Otherwise this is BS.

They’ve been out of a lot of stuff since Newtown but you can keep trying.

Since they instituted the ammo limit, I’ve bought many other items at Sportsman’s along with my 3 boxes of 5.56.

I wouldn’t even know what my Walmarts are doing – after 3 visits and no ammo to buy, and now being able to get it at Sportsman’s, I stopped looking for ammo at Walmart.

That’s like the old adage ‘there won’t be any left for anyone else ‘.

I believe that’s just good business. Better overall business to have more people coming in the store and buying more stuff. Many customers (like me) will just stop shopping at a store that never has what they want. Since they instituted the ammo limit, I’ve bought many other items at Sportsman’s along with my 3 boxes of 5.56.

Are you one of the hoarders you’re complaining about or are you shooting the ammo you purchase? I’ve bought more ammo in the past month than I have in the past year, but I’ve also shot more and the lines at the firing range suggest that others are as well.

I just shot several mags worth at the range yesterday – and that was just the .223/5.56 – also shot multiple mags of 7.62, 9mm, and .22, and a bunch of 12 gauge. Good day on the range.

I’ve had no trouble getting ammo of any kind at Sportsman’s Warehouse since they implemented a 3 box limit per visit for any single type of ammo. Until they did that, they had people trying to grab every case of .223 as soon as the pallet was brought out.

I called their corporate HQ.

They didn’t suspend the sale of what they had in stock but the person I spoke with week ago at Walmart HQ did indeed confirm they were suspending any new orders to restock their shelves. They continued to sell off what they already had but said until Biden’s recommendations are considered they were going to halt restocking.

I don’t know who you called or talked to but that is pure bs. My Walmart supercenter has never halted the stocking of ammo and does not have any plans to. My source is the manager of the store and I talked to him in person. He also stated that you can’t believe the wild rumors that get circulated about Walmart, whether it’s about guns and ammo, or selling baby seal meat in the deli.
