PolitiFact: Yes, more people murdered with knives, body parts and blunt objects than rifles in 2011

This infographic is floating around Facebook.

Photobucket

And according to PolitiFact (and the FBI) it’s true.

Our ruling

The post uses data selectively, ignoring the significant role of handguns in gun violence. But the statistics it mentions are solid. FBI data backs up the Facebook post’s claim that in 2011, more people were murdered with knives, “hands or feet” or “clubs and hammers” than with any type of rifle. We rate the statement True.

You can read the whole assessment here.

Nobody here is surprised.

I wouldn’t call it selective use of data. People are calling for bans on “Assault Rifles”. The “Let’s ban handguns crowd” aren’t the ones getting all the press right now.

Ban high-capacity hands. Only three fingers allowed.

The Rogue Tomato on January 18, 2013 at 3:53 PM

good find Katie, not shocked in the slightest when libs are discovered to be full of sh!t.

study did not include bayonets

And speaking of PolitiFact….

apostic on January 18, 2013 at 4:17 PM

I looked up murders by Hands and Feet back when the Zimmerman/Martin case was blowing up.

We’re not talking about hand guns.

We’re talking about those big, scary-looking, evil semi-auto rifles.

Thanks for trying to cloud the verdict with an unrelated topic, but you failed.

A point for our side, but the reason this is even an issue is because people are botching the comparison, and saying “guns” instead of “rifles”.

Then all the lib has to do is point to 10,000 gun deaths per year versus 500 with blunt objects and pronounce you an idiot.

MAKE A CLEAR ARGUMENT, for all our sakes.

The Schaef on January 18, 2013 at 4:59 PM

let’s ban hands and feet!!!

Clear arguments don’t work on ideologues with an agenda.
You want a clear argument? Here’s one.
None of those inanimate objects killed anyone.

Well, Obama is being selective in the types of guns he wants banned.

Well, cut ‘em a break, everyone… it must have pained them terribly with wailing and gnashing of teeth to rate this as true. A bit of obfuscation is understandable.

The most I need or use is just one finger.

I posted this factoid on the WaPo message board under E(for Eunuch). J (for Jerk) Dionne’s anti-gun, anti-common sense opinion piece. I got roundly flamed by the proggie troglodytes who populate those boards. It was a hoot to see them try to refute a fact. When they couldn’t refute the fact, the name calling was choice. Highly entertaining.

Are shotgun murders included?

goatweed on January 18, 2013 at 8:40 PM

one wonders where the number of those killed denied care by obamacare’s death panels will fit in that chart …

So are liberals acting on Alinsky tactics or out of ignorance when they go after guns on the premise that they want to save lives; but they support dismembering babies and vacuuming the bits out of the uterus?

tom daschle concerned on January 19, 2013 at 8:29 AM

I know many a soul who was crushed by a look and a word from someone. Murdered their spirit, or at least put it into crisis. Fingers? We don’t need no stinkin’ fingers!

I’m glad to see that the tactics of the Left/Libbie/Proggie/Deluded are now being turned around used against them. Seems only fair that their playbook becomes the playbook of their opponents.

Time to quit playing Calvinball with them and letting them make up all the rules as they go along.

Karma delayed is still Karma. (Some days Karma gets you…other days, you are someone else’s Karma!)

Pick and choose stats wisely

When I first saw that graphic I smiled, because it was obviously created by someone TRYING to provoke the question, “what about handguns” (as Shapiro tried to do with Morgan).

It’s generally a place gun control advocates don’t want to go, since (a) the SCOTUS had declared constitutional the weapon that kills most people, and (b) the handgun is the fallback “we don’t intend to ban that; see, we’re reasonable” weapon for gun control advocates.

But if it’s NOT reasonable to ban rifles and not handguns, their proposal is seen to be preposterous.

The rifle/handgun issue is like the old joke about the guy who was looking for what he lost under the streetlight “because the light’s better here,” even though he lost it further down the street in the dark.

Gun grabbers point at deaths due to handguns. I’d like to see a breakdown of how many of those deaths were at the hands of police, or in lawful self defence.

kurtzz3 on January 19, 2013 at 11:21 AM

This infographic is exactly as true as the Politifact 2012 Lie of the Year. Looks like they may be trying to rebuild some credibility now the the elections is accomplished.

forest on January 19, 2013 at 2:25 PM

Can someone please tell me where I can go register my hands, feet, knives, and hammers. I feel guilty. I have three hammers. Way more than I need for self defense as neither of my feet can hold one.

Limerick on January 19, 2013 at 4:21 PM

They only bolster their credibility post-election; pre-election they would have rated it a lie.

Fenris on January 19, 2013 at 6:57 PM

Mimzey on January 18, 2013 at 5:42 PM

And that’s a reason to botch the statistic?

Not sure why you would want to defend people saying the wrong thing, especially since it only emboldens the agendalogues.

The Schaef on January 19, 2013 at 8:04 PM

For once, I have some sympathy for Politifact. Admitting this is true had to hurt.

Of course, they try to obfuscate by accusing the creator of the graph of … obfuscation, since he doesn’t address handguns.

But then, they’re not trying to ban handguns. they’re trying to ban rifles. Just because that’s insanely useless is not the fault of the person who created the graphic. In fact, the entire point of the graphic is to point out just how useless banning rifles is.

And having done that truthfully and to the point, they want to act like the graphic is misleading for not talking about handguns.

Still, for Politifact, this is pretty good. Much better than I expected.

There Goes The Neighborhood on January 20, 2013 at 12:10 AM

Sorry, after Politifact’s “Big Lie of the Year” which turned out to be a big lie on its own, using them as a source or confirmation is a net negative to credibility.
