Of course: Obama to announce new gun policies surrounded by children

posted at 4:08 pm on January 15, 2013 by

Political theater at its most unseemly:

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney announced this afternoon that President Obama will unveil a “concrete package” of gun control proposals including assault weapons bans, high capacity ammunition magazine bans, and closing loopholes on background checks. Carney said that the president will be joined by Vice President Joe Biden as well as children who wrote to the president after the Newtown shootings. “They will be joined by children around the country expressing their concerns about gun violence and school safety, along with their parents,” Carney confirmed.

Let’s stipulate that the practice of using kids as props has a sordid bipartisan history, although the Left is far more likely to advance emotional arguments “for the children.”  Rather than griping about this ploy, conservatives should learn from it.  More than ever, optics and perception are the coin of the realm in American politics — more so than merit or empirical argument.  Like it or not, choreographing evocative photo-ops is politics 101 in today’s media climate.  Sure, the Right’s attempts at agitprop are almost always held to a higher standard of skepticism and scrutiny by the press, but that’s no excuse for conservatives to throw up their hands in unilateral surrender.  Since the Newtown horror, Democrats have held a series of press conferences featuring instantly-sympathetic victims of gun violence.  The opposing side’s response often comes in the form of a television appearance from someone like NRA president David Keene.  The visual gap is striking.  As I write this, the president’s team is coordinating a memorable backdrop of sweet-looking children to help close an emotional sale.  Why don’t pro-gun members of Congress or activist organizations answer with a press conference comprised exclusively of women who have used legally-owned firearms to fend off violent criminals?  Whining about the Left’s tactics accomplishes nothing.  Figuring out efficacious methods of emulating them — without abandoning certain standards of decency — is much more productive.

Parting thought: In spite of the media cushion they enjoy, Democrats occasionally overreach and end up turning the public’s collective stomach.  Will tomorrow’s presidential performance overplay the heartstrings card, or will the bulk of complaints come from partisan conservatives?

GB,

Some of us don’t read Athiests’ snark threads so thanks for the post.

I’m surprised their little bones can support the weight of your dancing.

I, and likely most other parents, would ask you to stop joking around about these real dead children.

Thanks.

Nope. There are too many ignorant people that will actively participate in the elimination of any opposition to Dear Leader, in whatever way it takes. Killing us off will be their “final solution.”

Two words – “Human Shields” ala Sadam Hussein

He doesn’t care……whatever will get him points. This substitute for a living, breathing human being cares for no one but himself.

Hannity just more or less said on the radio just now as I was driving down the road…… that he (Hannity) wonders if this embarrassment in the WH (my words) will tell these same children that he’s putting all this debt upon their little shoulders to pay for his unwhetted, selfish spending addiction (again my words).

“Suffer the little children to come unto me.” Such is the kingdom of Obama.

Bringing in the kids…very consistent with appearing on The View, and Letterman and granting interviews to the beauty salon publications. Our President is running the country much like Jerry Lewis ran the MD telethon.

Except the Lewis actually brought in revenues from donors who were happy to contribute – and from what I understand, most of the money was spent on what the contributors intended.

In IL Obama voted to permit infanticide. He did everything he could to prevent the IL Born Alive Infants Protection Act from being passed.

The Dems don’t do it for the children. They do it to the children.

INC on January 15, 2013 at 4:56 PM

I want to see every single Dem who wants gun control “for the children” to repudiate abortion, and become pro-life advocates.

Democrats—promoting child-killing since 1973.

We can expect the lapdog media to interview some of these kids after Obama’s speech tomorrow.

Photos like this one ought to be behind Obama…just for perspective.

well I concede that difference…maybe a better analogy would be the pan-handlers that drag their kids around begging for food money while somebody is stealing your wallet?

teejk on January 15, 2013 at 5:22 PM

You know who else uses children as human shields?

CurtZHP on January 15, 2013 at 5:33 PM

This (and I use the term lightly) man who calls himself King is a jacka$$ slimebucket of the first order. There is almost nothing lower than exploiting little children for one’s own ends. I cannot find words vile enough to describe that sack of shiite.

Good Father and Family man?—–BullCrap

Hiding behind children? Huh. I guess he really is Islamic./

S. D. on January 15, 2013 at 5:54 PM

Next budget presser by the GOP should have a bunch of kids with their pockets turned out, and have them repeatedly scream for us to stop spending their damn money.

CycloneCDB on January 15, 2013 at 6:08 PM

He is one shameless politician is he not? I wish people felt as perturbed as I am right now.

ojfltx on January 15, 2013 at 6:37 PM

This ploy to use children as props reminds of the South Park “You Hate Children” ad in the “Gnomes” episode. If his gun control idea could stand on its own he wouldn’t use children as props to sway American people’s emotions.

midgeorgian on January 15, 2013 at 7:36 PM

Obama to announce new gun policies surrounded by children

I’d be careful…he eats dogs you know.

It’s really not that big a leap…

Tim_CA on January 15, 2013 at 7:55 PM

The Wellstone memorial? You have to go back 10 years to find an example of the Democrats’ overreaching costing them in the court of public opinion?

What does that tell you?

SAMinVA on January 15, 2013 at 8:13 PM

Well, he couldn’t very well make the announcement surrounded by armed secret service agents, New Black Panthers, and the corpses of the four men who died at Benghazi, now could he?

My cold dead hands. But many will be cold before me.

M240H on January 15, 2013 at 8:21 PM

SAMinVA, or Obamacare.

Ladysmith CulchaVulcha on January 15, 2013 at 8:49 PM

Fine.

At all future media talks, press conferences, etc about government debt, have the children there, too.

It’s what Breitbart would do.

(Not holding breath for GOP…)

Bruno Strozek on January 15, 2013 at 9:05 PM

I wonder if they’ll be singing his praises, as in “Mmmmm, mmmmmm, mmmmmm, Barack Hussein Obama . . .”
His shamelessness knows no depth . . . . Long flowing hair, a beard and a white robe would top it all off, with children gathered at his feet . . .

So, I wonder how the inquiry into violent movies and video games is progressing? No doubt he’ll be hosting another photo op with little kids announcing his executive orders clamping down on those, no?

tpitman on January 16, 2013 at 5:52 AM

“They will be joined by children around the country expressing their concerns about gun violence and school safety, along with their parents,” Carney confirmed.

What a sick bastard. Still standing on the corpses of children and claiming to be protecting them.
