Justice Thomas speaks

posted at 4:30 pm on January 14, 2013 by

Finally breaking his famously characteristic oral-argument silence of seven years, Justice Clarence Thomas actually spoke up and cracked a joke during Supreme Court proceedings on Monday. Unfortunately, exactly what he said isn’t clear, but everybody laughed.

Thomas seemed to be making a light-hearted joke about lawyers trained at his alma mater Yale Law School or its rival, Harvard. But several justices were speaking and laughing at the time, and the court reporter lost Thomas’s comments during the cross talk.

His comments came during questions about the qualifications of lawyers who had represented a Louisiana man in a murder case. Justice Antonin Scalia noted that one of the lawyers had attended Harvard and another had gone to Yale. …

No matter what Thomas said, his streak of not asking a question at oral arguments continues. He last queried a lawyer Feb. 22, 2006.

According to liberals, Justice Thomas can’t speak, read, or do math…and he isn’t even black, so he can’t use that as an excuse.

SCOTUSblog has it as a joke on Yale law grads.

Of note, Justice Thomas is a Yalie.

And yes, the court reporter missed almost all of it in the transcript (page 40):

JUSTICE SCALIA: And another of his counsel, Mr. Singer — of the three that he had — he was a graduate of Harvard law school, wasn’t he?
MS. SIGLER: Yes, Your Honor.
JUSTICE SCALIA: Son of a gun.
JUSTICE THOMAS: Well — he did not –
(Laughter.)
MS. SIGLER: I would refute that, Justice Thomas.

Every justice on the SCOTUS went to either Harvard or Yale? Think about that. Does anyone else see what a bad idea that is?

Oh no! Everyone sitting on the highest court in the land went to the highest ranked law schools in the country! What a horror!

As have our last 4 presidents. Last one who didn’t went to a small college in California, Eureka. He turned out to be better than those who followed him.

True, though Ruth Bader Ginsburg got her law degree from Columbia. OTOH, that university is where a lot of presstitutes want to get their degrees.

Yes — it is a horror. The elitist class and what they’ve done to America is a horror. No more “highest ranked” anything for me. I want men and women in public service from the ranks of ordinary Americans.

And it’s a good thing too, otherwise we might have a dumb ass on the court from a lesser law school rewrite legislation and call Obamacare a tax.

William F. Buckley for the win!

I’d rather entrust the government of the United States to the first 400 people listed in the Boston telephone directory than to the faculty of Harvard University.

There are a thousand graduates of non-Ivy League schools who would make fine Supreme Court Justices. The experience of trying cases, and acting as a judge at the trial and appellate court level trumps anything learned, or taught, in any school.

I knew a couple of uber-libs that attended/graduated from Eureka. They wanted the college to disown Reagan. LoL

I’d much rather add to the diversity of thought however possible. Credentials have become far more important to our current society than they have ever been throughout our history and we are worse off because of it. Abe Lincoln had 18 whole months of formal education. Harry Truman didn’t have a degree. Ronald Reagan went to Eureka College in Illinois. Since the Ivy League has taken over our government, the country has plunged into the sh*tter. We are not an aristocracy.
