Video: Mark Kirk returns to the Senate

posted at 4:08 pm on January 3, 2013 by

Feel-good moments have been rather scarce on Capitol Hill recently, so enjoy this one:

Keeping a pledge he made last spring, Sen. Mark Kirk climbed the Capitol steps on Thursday to mark his return almost a year after suffering a major stroke. The 53-year-old Republican from Illinois was greeted by two top Democrats: Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Dick Durbin, the senior senator from Illinois. Using a four-pronged cane, Kirk made the climb assisted by Biden and Sen. Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat who is Kirk’s best friend in the Senate. Hundreds of well-wishers stood and applauded, including more than 60 members of Congress.

Kirk, a moderate Republican, suffered a massive stroke last January — nearly one year after he was sworn in as Illinois’ junior Senator, a seat previously held by Barack Obama.  He has kept constituents and well-wishers appraised of his health status in a series of YouTube videos, and sat down for an extended on-camera interview yesterday.   Here’s to Sen. Kirk’s continued recovery.  God speed, sir.

That was awesome.

Why weren’t any Republicans out there with him?

changer1701 on January 3, 2013 at 4:50 PM

There were several, including a few from the Illinois delegation & Mitch McConnell.

Guy, if you intended to make my eyes sweat, you succeeded. Thanks so much for giving us this.

May Sen. Kirk’s Noo Yoak Angels continue to watch over him for many years.

Smiles.. My favorite Senator.

Didn’t this guy vote to ban incandescent light bulb?

Welcome back to the Senate.

And may God bless your recovery.

Hooo-boy-howdy, Kirk’s ex-wife is on a tear today. No longer a feel-good story.

Fallon on January 3, 2013 at 9:41 PM

Wow. I’ve only heard nice things today, so please do dish. Is she upset about alimony? Really not sure why she’s bitter. Either she knew what she was getting into or is seriously lacking gaydar.

It’s on FB and I don’t exactly know how to link it and I don’t feel right quoting without a link. It involves another woman who was involved with Kirk during the entire marriage. It was touched upon here.

Fallon on January 4, 2013 at 7:48 AM

Another woman??? It’s been speculated for quite awhile that Kirk is gay.

Not what you were looking for, I guess… Sorry to disappoint you. Just allegations of Quid Pro Quo for regular ole heterosexual activities.

Fallon on January 4, 2013 at 9:29 AM

No, I just think that “allegation” isn’t true.

I won’t believe any gossip ’til I hear it from Roe Conn (or at least Don Wade & Roma).

I guess I’m getting to be an old fuddy-duddy, but I’m so annoyed by this guy interviewing a U.S. Senate with two giant earrings.

Jim-Rose on January 4, 2013 at 2:54 PM

Meh. What is it with all these princelings that they are so “irreplaceable”? For a year, Illinois has been without representation. Screw him and these whole lot of these leeches. And when they call Kirk a moderate Republican, they neglect to say he’s really a donkey running as a RINO.
