I understood exactly the point that you were TRYING to make. I was simply reiterating to everyone that there was no way that THIS bomb contained 20 pounds of anything. I was simply reiterating that THIS bomb contained no explosive material. I was simply reiterating that there’s no way that THIS bomb could “potentially kill people…” – as had been strangely implied early in the thread by mittens.

My reading comprehension is excellent . . . others – not so much.

There’s no way a 10 pound device can contain 20 pounds of anything.

Also, the device didn’t contain any explosive material at all so there’s no way it could “potentially kill people…”

I guess you missed the operative word in my post, “some”. I did not say this bomb contained anything. I said some practice bombs. Reading comprehesion is not your strong suit.

Europe is littered with tons and tons of unexploded ordnance buried to varying depths all depending on their weight and height from wich they were dropped/fired.

They did the right thing notifying the proper authorities. The Countries of Europe and Great Britian have been dealing with these items ever since WWI and especially after WWII. Even the experts have been known to make mistakes that ends tragically. Always better to be safe than sorry.

Are you serious? How could a practice bomb with no explosive material kill people? The same way a gun with no bullets can kill people?

This may sound like a good story, but the horrific realliztion is that they just destroyed a WWII historical item.

Actually, that’s not far off.

The 10lb practice bombs had what amounts to a small blank shotgun shell in the nose, that ignited a smoke grenade/marker in the tail. The nose was full of lead for weight.

When the nose struck the ground, the blank went off and ignited the white smoke marker so the spotter could gauge the accuracy of the drop(s).

As to injuring yourself, you might damage your hearing when the blank went off, but you’re more likely to injure yourself by dropping it on your foot. There’s no risk of explosion/fragments/etc from one of these.

The case of the vapors that the presstitutes are having over this is similar to their concerns about evil “high-capacity” magazines jumping up off a shelf and shooting someone without ever been put into a weapon.

Apparently two years ago in Germany an undetonated piece of ordinance was found from WWII. Even with a professional crew trying to dispose of the bomb, it still went off, killing three and injuring six.

According to wikipedia – grain of salt – undetonated ordinance dating back to the mid-1800′s can still be found that still poses a problem.

Old ordinance can become very unstable.

in france they have been continually retrieving unexploded ordinances- going back to before WW1- and removing them- so they do not kill people. to the tune of 900 tons of unexploded bombs, ordinances per year.this includes moldering, decaying chemical bombs- such as with mustard gas.

but saving lives is so not interesting…
