Video: A liberal’s case for the Second Amendment

New from Reason TV. Yes, these people do exist. They’re about as common as, oh, say, conservative atheists are, but they’re out there, God love ’em. So to speak.

If you haven’t before, read Dan Baum’s piece in Harper’s from this past summer chastising his fellow liberals for alienating millions of would-be Democratic voters with their cultural contempt for guns.

I’m curious…was this interview before or after Sandy Hook, when Obama made his gun grab move?

AUINSC on December 28, 2012 at 6:50 PM

I believe it was AFTER the 2012 elections, but BEFORE Sandy Hook. However, there are some Democrats who believe in the 2nd. Amendment, and are gun-owners themselves.

No way. AP capitalized God. There is hope for him yet.

John the Libertarian on December 28, 2012 at 8:07 PM

He didn’t make much of a case for the 2d Amendment there. Mostly it seemed like a defense of Obama, “Oh, he’s not going to take away your guns. You people are crazy. As a matter of fact, he *supports* gun rights, see?” Oy yes, he’s right: Obama won’t take away my guns – he doesn’t have the stomach to try. It will be Pelosi, et al. who will try once again to whittle away at the edges, gradually implementing that register of which Mr Whitney so glibly spoke. Sorry, no.

Yep, pretty much reminding DemocRATs to keep walking that crazy walk, but not talking that crazy talk – at least until after the election. It worked, too.

This was obviously done before Sandy Hook. I wonder if this guy is eating crow now that Obama is going after our guns or if he’s justifying the new calls for gun control because of outrageous outrage.

On C-SPAN’s Book-TV

Author Craig Whitney talked about his book, Living with Guns: A Liberal’s Case for the Second Amendment, in which he examines the history of firearms in America, pathways to cooperation between gun control advocates and opponents, and the presence of guns throughout American culture. He discussed his thoughts and theories with Paul Helmke, the former president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

Maybe next time. Shallow grace anyone?

Bmore on December 29, 2012 at 7:39 PM

grace=grave, but of course. ; )

Bmore on December 29, 2012 at 7:39 PM

I’m sorry, but liberal/progressive/socialists don’t believe in the individual.

So, not buying that this guy is a complete liberal.

LoganSix on December 30, 2012 at 8:51 AM

Before anyone gets the idea that Craig Whitney is an ally, watch the C-SPAN video I linked above, he’s not.

Shall not be infringed.

Hard to argue with. But they will anyway, guaranteed.

DixT on December 28, 2012 at 7:53 PM

Yes, but sadly, as with everything DFLMPS’s believe there should be one set of laws governing their conduct and far more draconian laws governing the masses.
