Yup. Removing 8 zeros on all figures, leaves budget cuts at $385 (unless that amount is spread over ten years, in which case you would also need to factor in inflation and interest.)

No, actually the budget cuts figure should be $385. Only dollar figures are being shown, not cents.

A slight scaling of the numbers so that the family income matches the median family income from 2011:

* Annual family income: $50,502.00
* Money the family spent: $88,902.14
* New debt on the credit card: $38,400.14
* Outstanding balance on the credit card: $332,126.29
* Total budget cuts so far: $896.00

I think this helps put things into a better perspective since it better matches household budgets.

Note: The ‘Total budget cuts so far’ number listed in the article is incorrect by a factor of 10. By your numbers it should be $385.00.
