Video: Damn, it’s cold in Russia

posted at 12:11 pm on December 21, 2012 by

This feels marginally more plausible than the eagle-swooping-on-a-toddler viral vid — the temperature shown on the guy’s iPhone is definitely plausible — but I don’t know. From boiling water to frozen vapor in less than a second?

What’s the verdict, physicists? Hoax or no?

Update: Wow. Looks like this is legit.

The winter reports from International Falls, MN that we used to see on the local news made me glad to be an Iowan kid.

pookysgirl on December 21, 2012 at 12:23 PM

I saw the same trick on Ice Road Truckers during their first season.

Snake307 on December 21, 2012 at 12:23 PM

Looks legit except something flies in front of the camera around 0.55. If it’s an insect, it must have some superior anti-freeze in its body.

TimBuk3 on December 21, 2012 at 12:29 PM

Current temperature – 11:30 cst (so still early morning there) – in Fairbanks, Alaska, which is about in the middle of Alaska is ~ -40 F. Yeah, I’d say that water, even boiling would freeze fairly quickly there.

Current temperature as of right now in Irkutsk, Russia (In Siberia by Lake Baikal) is -31 F. So, yeah… very, very cold.

Recall the short story by Jack London about the guy trying to survive?

Logus on December 21, 2012 at 12:33 PM

I cry like a baby when it gets below 60 degrees, can’t imagine how people live in -40 weather.

clearbluesky on December 21, 2012 at 12:47 PM

Its legit… was taught by Nuns in grade school that hot water freezes faster than cold water.

singlemalt 18 on December 21, 2012 at 12:47 PM

Having lived in Siberia, I can tell you that yes, this is true. -41 isn’t too bad, actually, Novosibirsk is in the southern part of Siberia. Try Norilsk.

Crefonso on December 21, 2012 at 1:11 PM

We’ve done that trick in Minnesota many times.

I do too! It was 32 with a 29wc here in S TX and I am freezing! But if it was as cold as gobs here are dealing with, I would never get out of my warm cozy bed?

And, conversely, cold water boils faster than warm water from what I’ve heard.

Logus on December 21, 2012 at 1:28 PM

It’s all due to global warming.

Heh, I walked to work this morning in a t-shirt, there was ice on the ground.

I remember back in the late 70’s maybe near 1980 when they said we had -50 without wind chill and -80 with.

Bulletchaser on December 21, 2012 at 3:55 PM

Come on AP, everyone knows hot water freezes before cold. At least, I thought everyone knew that.

ButterflyDragon on December 21, 2012 at 3:57 PM

Hot water will become vapor in the dry air and thus have far more surface area. If you threw cold water like that, it would remain in a a few chunks.

As for hot water freezing faster than cold water, it probably has more to do with circulation than anything else. Thus, more water will be exposed to the coldest temperature.
