Gallup: Republicans’ “life ratings” collapse after Obama’s reelection

posted at 7:21 pm on December 19, 2012 by

If you’re feeling completely demoralized about the future, you are not alone. Eyeball the first chart at the link, though, and riddle me this: What explains the spike in GOP life ratings late last year followed by the sharp dip in January 2012? I assume it’s a function of the primaries. Excitement for the field gradually built during the debates last winter, boosting optimism among Republicans. Then the first votes were held and the reality of a “Romney versus Not Romney” contest took hold, and thus did the depression set in. Or am I missing some obvious alternative explanation?

life ratings?

Flapjackmaka on December 19, 2012 at 7:37 PM

Sounds about right. The country as it was founded is over.

What explains the spike in GOP life ratings late last year followed by the sharp dip in January 2012?

another guess… during competitive primaries there’s lots of voter switching into the Republican party. The Republican voter pool was at its most moderate in Jan 2012. The conservative base has been consistently negative of Obama’s policies since Jan. 2009.

Well no duh. The electorate has basically shown, once and for all, that they will vote for whoever promises them the most bread and circuses. That is not precisely a good indication for our future.

Perhaps, instead of State by State Primaries, the R party can start doing something different… like have all the party members send in party ballots to their State organization for a private, party-only vote that is then opened at the National convention with each State organization tallying up votes live.

Dump the entire primary system entirely.

Make it a private function open to those registered party members who have been with the party more than four years.

You could campaign all you wanted!

You would never know how well you were doing!

Let the Democrats do the old, stodgy bit with Primaries and rigging.

Doesn’t mean you won’t end up with another apparatchik… but a ‘brokered’ convention might just happen with the State parties doing the brokering. That, at least, might be worth watching.

At the very least, the primary process needs to be revised by having closed primaries. How about the states that are won by the Republican candidates get the first primaries rather than going by convention with Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina?

If you’re feeling completely demoralized about the future, you are not alone.

I am not demoralized at all because I AM AN AMERICAN… I do not give up and I do not surrender… At the end the Good will Triumph over Evil and the Right over Wrong… Or else the world would have ended long time ago… Our side is Good and Right…

what is a “life rating”?

Old Fritz on December 20, 2012 at 9:41 AM

Read the article, it does explain what a “life rating” is, but that’s still a weird metric. Basically, Republicans are pessimistic about the future.
